To be annoyed at the lack of bathrooms

Applecharm25 · 20/01/2025 13:39

I have my period. I can feel that i need to change my tampon.

I'm out walking round my city. There are no public bathrooms anywhere near me.

I see a sign for a bathroom in a small shopping centre near me. I walk in. The bathroom is actually in a shop. I'm told that the bathroom is only available for paying customers.

So now I have to get in a long queue and wait further and buy something while I really need to change my tampon.

Surely there should be better toilet services available.

Out of interest, if there's no difference between women's demand for toilet facilities and men's, why are the queues for the ladies longer than the (often non-existent) queues for the gents?

Men on average have less preparation before they are ready to pee and their urethras (on average) are larger than female urethras so they can void volume quicker too.

So far no one has mentioned a she-wee - has anyone ever used one without getting wee everywhere ?

ScaryM0nster · 20/01/2025 19:58

I don’t think I’ve ever found myself unable to find a useable toilet facility in a city, and that’s as someone with a bladder injury so relatively little time to hunt and fairly regular needs.

I’ve also never been turned down by a shop when I’ve asked if I could quickly use their loo before buying something.

As a tip for the future - hotel lobbies are good options.

No men should not be peeing behind a bush. It isn't hygienic and it isn't lawful.

It never stops them, though.

I've had one saved in my Amazon basket for a while but not - ahem - pulled the trigger. The recommendation is to practice in the shower while you get the hang of it. Loud thumping sounds as 50% of Mumsnet posters faint in horror!

I was thinking of it for skiing (ski touring) but TBH anywhere I would feel was far enough from civilisation to be ok to pee with being gross is also going to be far enough from other people not to worry about dropping my pants so I haven't bothered. But maybe pop up urinals are a better use case (bleugh)

Princessfluffy · 20/01/2025 20:15

I agree OP we definitely need more public toilets, this is a national disgrace.

I have to say though that I have NEVER heard anyone from the UK use the word bathroom like this or ever seen any toilets labelled as bathroom. What part of the UK does this happen in?

Rtmhwales · 20/01/2025 20:21

People are so hilariously off topic I feel sorry for the OP.

For what it’s worth, I’m with you. I’m American and we say restroom. And I also don’t usually need a wee when I change my tampon so wouldn’t necessarily need a loo, but the loo roll comes in handy for cleaning up afterward if it’s a particularly heavy period.

I'm not sure if you are in America or are American (use of the word bathroom to mean toilet is not common in the UK), but public toilets are sadly the victims of spending cuts by Local Authorities in the UK. So whilst I agree that they should exist, they are becoming rarer in the UK (as I'm sure they are in other countries) due to running costs.

I live in a small rural town in NZ and we have plenty of public toilets, there are even some new ones. I also use toilets in some shops (without the need to buy anything), the hospital (just when passing), the cinema (without seeing a movie), the local sports centre, McDonalds, supermarkets etc (again just passing).

My apologies if this has already been mentioned (I can't be bothered to check the entire thread!), but this can be useful:

This thread is mad. The OP, who is most probably Jessica Yaniv, getting their thread completely derailed by the use of the word bathroom.

notedbiscuits · 20/01/2025 20:38

Another idea - hotels. They usually have toilets in the reception area or listed on the board of things such as restaurant(s), gym etc.

I have used toilets in hotels before, here in the UK and abroad. They are clean, free and nice.

It boils my piss when councils close public toilets to save £20k a year when they waste that much plus more a week on red tape etc.

I think her combative and obtuse attitude didn’t help. It’s a bizarre thread.

No one is encouraging men to do that. It's just that they do have that option in absolute emergency while women don't.

Just pondering on the many long days I've had in the mountains without a loo in sight, and wondering how I coped, not being able to pee behind a bush.

MereDintofPandiculation · 20/01/2025 20:49

Yes.

Firstly, you need the little pipe extension, else it gets over your clothes.
Secondly. it takes that concentrated relaxation you need when you're using a bed pan. There's no question of directing it out quickly, you just have to relax and trust to nature.

You've been trained your whole life to cope.

I think the OP is a man and the whole thread is a wind up because tampon changing rooms definitely would not work.

Why do you think I'm a man exactly

Also is that not the most immature, purile insult someone could come up with

"You cant talk about womens issues. You're a man!"

I'm not a man.

You're a man!

See how immature it is?

Thanks for feeling sorry for me!

Yeah I never need to go for a wee at the same time as changing a tampon or pad, usually.

So I was just thinking that female toilets could be better organised.

There are always really long queues.

Women who need to wee, or change a pad/tampon are all queueing for the same toilets.

When if they had toilets ,

and if they also had a couple of small tampon/pad changing rooms , the queues would me much shorter and more efficient

Relaxaholic · 20/01/2025 21:26

Because even if your periods are so light that you could manage with a tampon changing rooms definitely and not a loo, I can’t believe that any woman would have so little awareness around the physical needs a woman has during her period and why a loo would be needed. I’m not going to get into more detail because I think that is what you must be wanting to hear.

Relaxaholic · 20/01/2025 21:27

And the fact that you aren’t dropping the point when so many women are sharing their experiences which explain why the idea is unrealistic suggests you aren’t really genuine here.

Why a loo would be needed by women on their period. .

But multiple women have said on this thread that they don't use the loo, when they change a tampon. Did you miss that?

And obviously in my suggested scenario , to have toilets and period changing rooms,

The women are not forced to not use the toilet.

They would have the option of course.

If they're on their period and they need to use a loo they still can of course.

If they feel they don't need to use the loo, and just want to do a quick change of period product, eg. Pad/menstrual cup/ tampon they could use the changing room

next time just pull it out in the middle of the street and if anyone gives you funny looks, shout
“I HAVE FEMININE HYGIENE NEEDS” and throw the dirty tampon at them.
THAT should get you your own tampon changing room.

Lol. You're ignoring women on here.
Have you missed the women on this thread who said they don't need the loo when they go to change a tampon?

Why are you so angry exactly? On a thread that is talking about improving facilities for women.

Why be angry?

Women haven't said my idea is unrealistic.

Women on this page, have said that they're with me on this.

Can you read? Go back and read. It's right there.

I think her combative and obtuse attitude didn’t help. It’s a bizarre thread.

It strengthens my theory that “she” is not a woman on her period but someone who wants to talk about tampons for some other reason. Why is it even necessary to mention a tampon? There aren’t enough public toilets, full stop. We all know it. We don’t need to explain why we might need to use them.

Ooh the big bully called me a man again.

Mature. Not.

I'm not a man, pet.

And as a woman i have every right to talk about period products.

You can't bully me or any other woman into not talking about our bodies or our periods.

I've been nice up to now.

But the next person that insults me is getting reported.
