Is this fraud?

Just been on my online banking and noticed a payment of £12.99 came out for Amazon today, I haven't bought anything off Amazon and there is nothing in my recent orders to reflect this.

Have contacted the bank and they are issuing me a new card but just wondered if I need to do anything else? Never happened to me before :-(

Go onto your Amazon account and see if anything has been ordered.

TallNeckedGiraffe · 19/01/2025 22:05

Is it Amazon prime membership?

Go onto your Amazon account and see if anything has been ordered.

I mentioned there is nothing in my recent orders of this price. Haven't ordered from there in a few weeks.

My dh pays for Amazon prime and I use it as friends or family so unless something has changed I shouldn't be paying it. It's definitely not something I usually pay anyway,

Perhaps you have an accidental subscription from something you previously purchased. Look in your account for subscriptions. They can be every 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8 months. This gives you discount when purchasing, as you agree to buy more, weeks or months down the line.

ThinWomansBrain · 19/01/2025 22:10

Has Alexa signed you up to any kind of subscription?

You'll probably have to put up with the infuriating AI customer "service" but you usually get to the request a call back eventually - do take it up with them.

On your bank statement, can you see the account it has gone to, is it the same as other amazon payments - or if not on the statement, can the bank confirm?

FartyPrincess · 19/01/2025 22:11

Yes, it happened to my DH. Amazon refunded him. It was some cleaning stuff delivered to an address nowhere near us. The bank sent him a new card.

It sounds like the kind of thing Alexa would do.

Give you a few free months and then start charging for stuff.

It may be a scammer testing your bank before they debit a larger amount. I'd be inclined to cancel my card and report it quick.

badwife29 · 19/01/2025 22:13

Alexa and everything related to Amazon is in my husbands name. I do have my own account but I only really get the benefits or prime delivery etc.

Yes I've rang the bank just now and cancelled my card. Haven't spoken to Amazon yet but got a new card on the way. Just wondered if I need to do anything else.

Alexa signed me up to the music subscription 🙄
I always shout no ( usually followed by F off) when she suggests signing me up, but must have missed it on one occasion - but I did get Amazon emails about it and could see it in orders - and it did need me to confirm payment details.

Am I the only person that loses it on occasion and swears at Alexa?

badwife29 · 19/01/2025 22:17

Oh panic over. I just checked my long dead email account which is linked to my Amazon and apparently they have belatedly charged me for an item that I didn't return months ago. I reported it as not arrived and then it came the next day.

Oh god I've literally just lodged a fraud case with the bank and cancelled my card. What a twat.

glad it's resolved

Update the email address on your amazon account

There should be a "Are you sure you want me to sign you up" if you say Yes first time.
