I had the mirena inserted on 8th Jan. I've had a lightish wartery bleed. The last 3 days that became a bit more very light period like. Ordinarily I have big clots and flooding so nothing like that!

However the last two days I've been dizzy, demotivated and very tired. The dizziness is really disconcerting.

Anyone else felt like this?

Hello I'm 44 I don't need oestrogen as I had a thickening of the womb and polyps removed. This is caused by too much oestrogen in the body. Hence the mirena for the heavy periods and to counteract the thickening of the womb. Obesity can be a cause of this.

Woken up with a terrible headache going to count how many days I've been on the new brand of anti d and see if that coincides with the headaches and dizziness.

I had light spotting every month, it never settled down. Got rid of it 3 years down the line after constant thrush.

Anotherfrozenpizzafortea · 21/01/2025 07:22

Had mirenas for years then got a really bad thrush infection that wouldn't shift. For like a year - several treatments of ABs, washing gently, partner fully treated, horrible horrible time physically and emotionally. Had the mirena removed and was resolved in 2 weeks, never had thrush before or since.

Great for light periods and predictability though.

Love mine. I agonised over it after reading stories of bad experiences b it it gave me my life back. I was struggling to leave the house one week in every three due to the bleeding. When I had it put in I spotted every day for a year but that was far easier to deal with. I still have very light periods (a few days of spotting) but the constant spotting has finally stopped. Didn’t notice any effect on mood (utrogestan made me homicidal) and have put on weight but that could be due to other factors - and I’d take the weight gain over the periods I used to have.

LaPalmaLlama · 21/01/2025 07:49

I had mine put in at my 6 week check up after having DD- I only mention that as I wonder if breastfeeding, so not having periods and being full of pp hormones anyway, settled it down better. Anyway, periods literally never came back at all other than v occasional light spotting. I’m on my 3rd mirena now and think I’ll get one more before I’m well and truly through the menopause.

so a v good experience here. I also get on v well with HRT and the doctor did say it’s linked and some people do just get on with it better.

RobinEllacotStrike · 21/01/2025 08:04

I loved it. No periods, no pregnancy. Was brilliant.

Apart from the hideous grinding depression it caused. It can creep up on you so keep an eye out for it.

lifebow · 21/01/2025 08:16

I have become a bit more fatalistic over the last two week; that could be bad cognitive patterns though! I do sometimes think doom and gloom where I need to get a grasp on the positive!

New anti d only the last two days and been dizzy since Fri/Sat. No other bug.

I read somewhere online the mirena can stimulate your vagus nerve?

Got my first mirena in Nov aged 46 after years of copper coils. My periods were getting heavier and I was beginning to notice some possible peri symptoms, felt a little overwhelmed and anxious.
So far, so good, periods are almost non existent, might need a liner one or two days of the month but not even what could be described as a flow.
Might be coincidental timing but I think I feel happier too, less overwhelmed and less anxious, maybe that's not related though, not sure.
I was noticing loss of libido before, that's not improved, I wish it would.
One thing I definitely notice is I'm drier vaginally, no monthly discharge, understandable if I'm not ovulating but, sorry if TMI, I don't get wet Blush . Is that the mirena acting on me physically or my loss of libido acting on me psychologically?
Not noticed weight gain, but I am always the same weight, quite slim, it doesn't tend to fluctuate.
Overall I think I'm happy with it.

Darksideofthemoonie · 21/01/2025 08:28

Had one last year, stopped my horrendous periods almost overnight but sadly gave me vulvovaginitis after about three months. Eventually took it out (after another gp insisted it wasn’t the Mirena causing it) and vv went away within two weeks.

Periods and low iron came back with a vengeance so decided with my good gp to try again with a new Mirena. Over two months in, no periods, no vv - keeping everything crossed this is it!

I’m on my third. First no issues, no periods, perfect. Second moved and had to be removed, I did have periods. Third and current one I have periods still. No idea why I’ve reacted differently.

This gives me hope my second one will do the trick!

Thistooshallpass. · 21/01/2025 08:59

Awful - gave me cystic spots that I have never had . Plunged me into a dark mood with suicidal thoughts- never had before or since .
Removed after 3 months .

It's perimenopause. You poss could do with some oestrogen and for your libido - testosterone.

You read it in my post above!

My GP and gynae and the anaesthetist who did my last day operation all told me about the impact of the vagus nerve in gynae issues.

lifebow · 21/01/2025 12:41

@Lobstercrisps apologies.

So I spoke to DH he said I told him I was feeling dizzy since Friday. I checked my period app and that's when I recorded more of a period like bleed (as in more than I've been having since I had the coil). So I think the dizziness and headaches is connected to my 'period'.

I hated it. I suffered from extremely heavy and debilitating periods for years and the only option for treatment ever offered was the mirena coil which I really didn't fancy but which, according to almost every medic I spoke to, was the best thing since sliced bread. I had it removed after 2 dreadful years - I have it my best shot but I had constant cramps, constant bleeding, it was just horrendous. But I know it works for many women, hence it's popularity in the medical profession. I had depo provera injections instead every 10 weeks (normally 12 but the effects wore off for me sooner than is usual). The depo jabs were the answer to my prayers and I sailed through the rest of my life and the menopause; I only wish I had had these jabs sooner.
Bottom line - mirena coil is fantastic for many women, but don't be afraid to admit it isn't right for you whatever the medics say.

BigButtons · 21/01/2025 15:57

@op I think you might be over analysing things . Just see how you get on longer term.

TimPat · 21/01/2025 16:00

It made my hair fall out. The contraceptive implant did the same. I was told by the nurse who removed it that it's a less common but known side effect.

Topseyt123 · 21/01/2025 16:20

The mirena coil was dreadful for me. I hadn't really wanted to have it but let myself be persuaded against my better judgement.

It was meant to deal with heavy, flooding periods and shrink some of the fibroids which were causing them. It achieved neither. I bled for over a year on it and the fibroids grew.

I also gained weight on it, which I could ill afford to do because I already had weight and other medical conditions. I also had constant PMT and anxiety while it was in there. I knew that I would want it removed almost immediately after it was inserted (I knew it was a mistake) but COVID and lockdowns struck and I couldn't get an appointment. One day, about a year later and after some particularly heavy flooding which had me spending much of the night in the bathroom, I called my GP, explained all that had been happening and absolutely insisted on an appointment to get it removed. They agreed and getting rid of it was a blessed relief.

Never again, though thankfully I am finally (at 58) through the menopause now.

lifebow · 21/01/2025 16:51

@BigButtons yes possibly!! I'm particularly anxious at the moment.

@BigButtons yes possibly!! I'm particularly anxious at the moment.

I totally get it! When we take something new or in this case have a hormone added it’s so easy to attribute things to that thing- whereas in all reality we probably wouldn’t pay much attention otherwise. You are looking for signs and trying to say it could be because of the coil.
chances are if has nothing to do with it at all!

lifebow · 21/01/2025 18:57

@BigButtons I'd love it if that's the case as I can totally cope with this 'period' bar the dizziness and the headaches. But the headaches are totally manageable with painkillers. The dizziness threw me.

Really hope I'm like one of the lucky PPs!!!! I really don't want periods anymore and I don't need them either!

Hi all. Interesting to read all the stories here. If you did have a negative experience can I urge you to report it via the MHRA yellow card scheme? This the only systematic way side effects can be reported back.

I know the Mirena works well for some but not for others and people should know the possible outcomes. Otherwise as we've heard it gets foisted on people and when they report ill effects they are not listened to.

Kenclucky · 22/01/2025 14:09

Fine once in to begin with, although the worst pain of my life (inc childbirth) having it inserted. It ended up perforating into my womb though so that was not fun.

I am so sorry to hear that! Please can I ask - did it grow back after it was removed?

TimPat · 22/01/2025 20:23

@Bookworm333 yes it's slowly getting thicker again. The serious shedding started maybe 2 months after it was inserted and stopped within a month of having it out. My hair isn't as thick or healthy as it was before but it is regaining, my hairdresser agrees. I had the coil removed 6 months ago. I had a very similar experience with the implant 20 years ago but took the chance on the coil and it backfired!
