I had the mirena inserted on 8th Jan. I've had a lightish wartery bleed. The last 3 days that became a bit more very light period like. Ordinarily I have big clots and flooding so nothing like that!

However the last two days I've been dizzy, demotivated and very tired. The dizziness is really disconcerting.

Anyone else felt like this?

Life changing for me. I went from debilitating periods and severe anaemia to nothing.

2welshmums · 20/01/2025 21:04

I had a mirena for 10 years (not for contraception)

It took about 6 months to settle down, initially I was suffering spasms with pain and bleeding, went back to GP and they advised to allow time.

Once things settled, I did have a light regular period with minimal cramping. I still suffered with ovulation cramps also each month.

Hoping yours settles soon

I’m on my third and can’t imagine life before, haven’t had any bleeding in 15 years, it’s bliss. I reckon it’s more likely that the anti ds are making you dizzy OP, hope you feel better soon.

mowthegrass · 20/01/2025 21:16

I never got on with progestin and resisted the Mirena for 15 years. But at the age of 45 my bleeds were off the charts heavy and lasting 6-8 weeks. I couldn’t leave the house much.
I had ultrasounds and a hysteroscopy which established there was nothing untoward going on and the mega bleeds were purely hormonal. My gynae told me to try the mirena, I cried a bit but said I’d give it a go. She promised it would come straight out if I hated it.
Because I’m peri, I asked for oestrogen patches too.
It’s changed my life! First few weeks I was very tired and headachy but it all settled within a couple of month.
Now I wear white trousers 😜

I had a Mirena coil for about 15 years. I didn't have any side effects at all and i didn't have a period during that time. It was removed when I had a polyp removed from my cervix which dislodged it.

However, I had no idea about the evidence which suggests a link between the Mirena coil and breast cancer, and had I done so, I would never have had it fitted. I was diagnosed with breast cancer about a year after having the coil removed, and whilst of course they couldn't be certain, my breast surgeon and oncologist both told me that they thought it was very likely to have been a contributory factor, and they saw a much higher incidence of women who have had a Mirena coil in their clinics than they would have expected.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 20/01/2025 21:35

@WhatsMyBabysnameAmanda by the time it was taken out I was through the menopause so it’s all calmed down. I had endo plus adenomyosis so each month was a misery until the Mirena

LostittoBostik · 20/01/2025 21:39

Fitted on 2 October. Light bleeding for 2 weeks a week off. Also, cystic acne worsening.
But this is much better than my flooding periods which left me unable to leave the house and suffering from heart palpitations. So I'll take it. Hoping it will settle in six months.

Wish44 · 20/01/2025 21:42

Took months to settle, bleeding, bloating and feeling very tired , like the early stages of pregnancy. But once settled it has been fabulous. No pmt, no period. Can’t believe now how much I suffered and how each month was just a waiting game for the next stage in the cycle. I am now totally free .thank god for the coil!

Duechristmas · 20/01/2025 21:43

I had terrible depression on it and had to have it removed. Never again!

Tillow4ever · 20/01/2025 10:40

I hated my Mirena. I got a severe depression that made me suicidal. I could have physically ripped it out myself had the drs not agreed to take it out for me.

It took me far too long to realise what was causing it too - I regret ever getting it, will never have another, and will never recommend it.

I was the same

runningpram · 20/01/2025 21:44

Mine has been great - much lighter periods and less PMS. I have had a bit of mild irritability but not the three days of crazy lady as previously. Keen to start taking the oestrogen gel alongside it now - although not sure Im going to need it aa urgently as I thought. The progesterone via the mirena seems to be helping.

ThinWomansBrain · 20/01/2025 21:48

Brilliant - I think there was some light spotting first 2-3 days.
I don't recall side effects - if there were, the lack of heavy bleeding & clots was such a relief I didn't notice.
Periods stopped altogether.
Found getting it inserted painful - hospital gave up in the end & did it alongside another procedure under GA.

Getting it out - was way after it's suggested useful life, but I was concerned it might be the cause of repeated UTIs (it wasn't) - GP receptionist said "oh, the nurse that does that has just retired, I expect one of our new trainees can have a go" - I passed on that and went to a sexual health clinic, was done by a very experienced doctor in that field.
Would always recommend insertion or removal done by someone v experienced in doing that procedure, rather than someone "having a go",

If it's only been in a few days would give it a few more days, give it a bit longer? Any suggestions in the patient info leaflet or seek advice from whoever put it in place/111.
Avoid driving if you feel dizzy.

Comtesse · 20/01/2025 21:52

I’ve had one for 11 years - now on my 2nd - I’m a big fan, I have endometriosis and it’s made a huge difference.

MidlandsWoman · 20/01/2025 21:52

I had a horrible time on it: neurological problems (mimicking MS, including vision loss), migraines, weight gain, depression, loss of libido (no surprise, said my female GP when I finally went to ask for it to be taken out after 18 months of this hell).

Idratherbepaddleboarding · 20/01/2025 21:58

I’m meant to be getting one fitted in Sunday but I’m freaking out now! I already have depression and spots that could easily turn into acne and I have an eating disorder so gaining weight is not an option for me. The dr gave me the mini pill while I was on the waiting list (for 5 months just for a coil!!) so I wonder if it would be the same or worse than that. I’ve been bleeding every 2 weeks since starting the mini pill which sucks. Has anyone gone from the mini pill to a coil?

BumpandBounce · 20/01/2025 22:03

I had sore breasts and period like cramps for a couple of weeks. Periods completely stopped. I think my coil is great!

Thanks for this. I have adenomyosis too so I know exactly what you mean. Your experience is my plan too - that I can keep it through meno and then hopefully it will all calm down by itself, so good to know it did work for you in the same circumstances. The mirena has been a god send so far!

This is very good news. After 3 months the painful boobs and cramps have totally gone for me now so just hoping the spotting and acne will clear up this year too. I like it but I want to love it

Thepeopleversuswork · 20/01/2025 18:24

Mine has been a lifesaver: I had awful PMS for years and Mirena completely did away with it and I've never had hormonal side-effects, despite having severe reactions to the pill. I've had it for over 20 years and will keep it until its no longer needed.
It's a very individual reaction.

Same here, it was amazing. Had it removed post menopause. I had awful pms and period pain, Mirena was life changing.

Yerra · 20/01/2025 22:31

I got mirena fitted mid November and 2 week later had my usual heavy heavy cycle which continued for a month but not the clots. Then next cycle was after Xmas and much much lighter and still ongoing but still light. From what I have been suffering the past few weeks have been easier. No headaches. Very tender books. Hoping it settles in next couple months

BigButtons · 20/01/2025 22:35

I had a horrendous time. I started spotting and then just bled and bled. I had constant awful pain in my uterus too.
Had to be given huge doses of norithisterone to stop the bleeding. They agreed to remove it after a couple of months but the threads had disappeared into my womb. They were fished out without anaesthetic. Then I had a horrendous infection.
just awful.

OurFlagMeansAfternoonTea · 20/01/2025 22:48

I got the Mirena at 45 when the GP said I couldn't take the pill anymore.

After 5 years I had another put in for the next 5 years. I love that I haven't had a period since I was 45. The menopause happened with no symptoms.

It was great for me.

BerthaAntoinetteMason · 20/01/2025 23:09

I got repeated UTIs and vaginal infections. Horrid things.

fairfat40 · 20/01/2025 23:13

I had it and hated it at first. The chemically smell etc, but then I loved it. The freedom from periods and improved sleep. However I was very deficient in progesterone.

How old are you? I wonder whether you need oestrogen to balance it out?

Showdogworkingdog · 20/01/2025 23:48

I’m on my third. First no issues, no periods, perfect. Second moved and had to be removed, I did have periods. Third and current one I have periods still. No idea why I’ve reacted differently.
