I had the mirena inserted on 8th Jan. I've had a lightish wartery bleed. The last 3 days that became a bit more very light period like. Ordinarily I have big clots and flooding so nothing like that!

However the last two days I've been dizzy, demotivated and very tired. The dizziness is really disconcerting.

Anyone else felt like this?

That's why I said safely. I know my way around a vagina, professionally, and I'm perfectly capable of pulling on some strings when met with zero resistance.

Fair enough, I think helpful for us lay people to know we shouldn’t try this at home, though!

Collette78 · 20/01/2025 16:22

Have you had the position of it checked? I can’t feel mine so had to get a nurse to check it but may be worth ensuring it hasn’t moved.

Mirena was a bit of a nightmare for me for about 6mo the then needed POP to settle it down, I’ve come off that now and all okay so overall I think the Mirena is quite good.

Well, you could, and some people do. That would be your informed choice if you wanted to research it. But I'm not wanting to debate that here.

DanceTheDevilBackIntoHisHole · 20/01/2025 16:30

I got mine in early December. About 2 weeks later I had two days of light vertigo dizziness. That feeling like the room was tilting. I've experienced that before with migraines, although rarely. I did ask the Peppy practitioners about it (I have access via health insurance) and they said it can happen. Faded after two days and not come back thankfully.

Still bleeding lightly every day but have faith it'll go!

ETA just saw you are having headaches too so could be a migraine. My dizziness came with migraine.

StarsBeneathMyFeet · 20/01/2025 18:20

I think it’s important/helpful to make this clarification - typically, you will ovulate and if you don’t become pregnant, you have a period. With the Mirena, you don’t ovulate. Any bleeding you have is ‘breakthrough bleeding’ not a period. Once you understand that, what you’re experiencing makes more sense.
I didn’t get on with it personally. I wasn’t in the best place with my mental health anyway and it lowered my mood (think paranoia and hysterical crying!). I think I’m really sensitive to all synthetic hormones and just stopped in the end. It’s not ideal because I have endometriosis but as I approach menopause they’ve changed and I find using a moon cup means less cramps. I know lots of people love it though!

Thepeopleversuswork · 20/01/2025 18:24

Mine has been a lifesaver: I had awful PMS for years and Mirena completely did away with it and I've never had hormonal side-effects, despite having severe reactions to the pill. I've had it for over 20 years and will keep it until its no longer needed.
It's a very individual reaction.

morellamalessdrama · 20/01/2025 19:05

I'm on my third one and I've had the coil for around 10 years. It's for heavy periods only I don't need it for contraception as my husband has had a vasectomy.

It's been absolutely life changing for me. My periods are a lot lighter and I can live a normal life now without worrying about bleeding everywhere.

I haven't noticed any dizziness, but that could be linked to ovulation?

I think my mood has actually improved by having it the progesterone must be doing me some good.

MayAnneisMine · 20/01/2025 19:18

Awful. I got if for heavy periods. It worked in that I didn't get a period for the 6 months I had it in. I put on two stone in weight and my mental health deteriorated. My GP removed it after six months.

Blownupblowndown · 20/01/2025 19:23

when I had mine, I had a normal period after, then some light spotting for 2 more weeks and then no periods for 6 months- I loved that bit!
HOWEVER…… after the 6 month mark, it all went downhill. I had began getting severe thrush-like itching once every 24-28 days. Got tested each time and it was not thrush or a uti or anything dr could find. Worked out from my previously ‘extremely regular’ cycle that it would have been roughly while I would have been ovulating - weird huh???
Then after about 8 months, I a handful of really scary episodes in the evenings- heart palpitations, very fast heart rate (over 130 resting on the bed), a feeling of doom and dizziness. I managed to calm myself down during the first one, but when it happened again the following week, I ended up in a&e sure that I was having a heart attack. All tests came back fine and it was put down to panic attacks- never had one before and wasn’t really an anxious sort of person.
Anyway, it happened about 3 more times over the course of the following month but I managed to control it myself. It was beyond scary. I honestly thought I was going to die each time!
As the not-thrush, thrush was getting worse, j eventually gave in and got the Mirena coil taken out. Funnily enough, Ive never had itching or a panic attack ever again! Touch wood.
i know a lot of ladies get on well with it but i hated it!

Grapewrath · 20/01/2025 19:30

Awful- awful IBS, , weight gain and constant bloating plus period symptoms that would never materialise
I also used to get a horrible low down scraping feeling and back ache
i felt better within a few days of having it out

HansHolbein · 20/01/2025 19:31

It prevented pregnancy but it gave me raging cystic acne.

Grapewrath · 20/01/2025 19:31

Oh and I forgot the horrible bladder spasms

Blev2022 · 20/01/2025 19:33

I had the 3 year one previously (jaydess) and initially loved it but ended up getting weight gain so had it removed. No dizziness though.
I've just started tranexamic acid for my heavy periods which has been great so far :)

AuntieSoap · 20/01/2025 19:40

I bled non-stop for about 6 weeks but then periods stopped altogether, apart from the PMS symptoms which were HORRENDOUS. I've never experienced such low mood, and thought I was actually going mad for half the month.

I also put on 10lb and got terrible acne, like boils on my face and neck.

In short, the whole Mirena experience (I gave it almost a year) was awful for me, and the moment I had it removed, I felt instant relief.

Some people love it though.

Yes pretty much what I had with mirena. Once it was removed and replaced with a copper coil. I felt much better

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 20/01/2025 19:52

I'm on my third Mirena and I have to say it has been wonderful for me. Yes, it's uncomfortable immediately after insertion and for a few hours after but after the first few weeks with my first M (lots of random watery blood and a weird sense of being too tall, somehow) I have a day or two of spotting every month and that's it.

WaitingForMojo · 20/01/2025 19:54

thesecondmrsdewinter20 · 20/01/2025 16:05

I don’t think removing your own IUD is safe unless you are medically qualified.

My GP told me I could remove it myself safely if I wanted to!

That feeling of being too tall!! I've had that too!! I link it to the dizziness.

I cannot put on two stone!! Why does it cause weight gain? I'm already 14 stone.

OP i haven't put on a pound and if anything I'm lighter as HRT made me more motivated.

Sallysoup · 20/01/2025 20:31

Has anyone switched from the depo to the mirena? I've had the depo for 15 years without any bleeding but it's getting harder to get appointments at my doctors, so considering a change but absolutely cannot be arsed with periods ever again.

QuizzlyBears · 20/01/2025 20:34

I hated it so much and had such awful symptoms I started having intrusive thoughts and dreams about ripping it out myself. Doctors wouldn’t remove it (covid) and in the end I lied and said I had a temperature and thought I had an infection so I could get it removed at the the iCASH clinic.

I've removed the coil from myself before and it was fine. A firm, steady tug for a second and it was out and that was it.

I had regular spotting for about 6 months then no periods or endometriosis pain for years until I finally stopped with it at 55.

I’ve had mine in for just over a year for endometriosis and the pain has gone for me too 😅 I’m still getting my period but much lighter. I’m 45, what has happened with your endo now you’ve stopped it if you don’t mind me asking?

weegiemum · 20/01/2025 20:51

I loved my mirena (had it when it was quite a new thing -I'm old!).

After the first month of spotting I had no periods, no acne, no hormonal migraines, no raging pmt.

My only problem was that it somehow migrated into my cervix, so stopped working properly and I got pregnant!

Dd2 is now 21 and the light of our lives! (Obviously along with dd1 and ds). I'm so glad it worked that way but at the time it was very hard going, I don't "do" pregnancy very well and was ill for over 2 years after she was born!

Littlemisscapable · 20/01/2025 20:59

Thanks OP for this thread ... I have been offered the mirena while getting polyp removed next month and I cannot decide. These experiences really aren't selling it to me. I have heavy periods but only for 2 days a month. I am really sensitive to hormones , have pcos so gain weight really easily and hated the pill so am really reluctant to have it in but then some people have no problems and having light periods would be good...I'm confused....
