All inclusive hotel in Spain.

Fancy dress competitions for kids and kids club for general ents etc discos

Some of the male hotel guests putting on drag acts as evening entertainment

Two pools - one indoor / one outdoor

Sharing a dinner table with another guest couple at the hotel

Space invader machines /Pac Man etc

Pool table

VERY predominantly British guests

Hotel is right next to a beach

Plenty of cafes and bowling alleys near by for entertainment

Nice ‘bar’ area where you can also get drinks like milk shakes etc

Courier service so you have the option to go on day trips etc

Hotel guests in general are a bit ‘Phoenix Nights’ iyswim

So, what’s the verdict ?? Y Viva Espana?

Yes there were some all inclusive hotels in the 1980s but from what I remember they tended to be mostly really high end resorts in the Caribbean, and some even included unlimited cigarettes 😆

It's different but I don't see why it's seen as superior to the holiday the op is describing.

We've done ai...we can explore and visit the beach. The entertainment isn't compulsory...some nights we'd watch it, some nights we'd go for a walk, sit in a bar, play cards, whatever.

Self catering is never a holiday imo. I spend my whole sodding life cooking, I have zero desire to be in a kitchen on holiday

Totally disagree. I love self catering - I don't cook though; nobody does. We eat out in different places. We might get some cold bits in for breakfast but otherwise I love to try out different local restaurants and not be tied to one place all the time.

AnnaL94 · 18/01/2025 21:28

Yeah snobby. Such as:

that sounds shit

sounds like a holiday camp!

Sounds utterly ghastly

we don't do AI/package hols etc

Grim

Obvs not, is this a joke post

I like a classy city break

Hideous beyond

It’s sounds horrific

Nope, not one of them is remotely amusing.

Why do you get to judge people's preferences? Sounds like reverse snobbery to me.

I always go self catering - I’ve never made more than coffee and toast.

It’s the freedom to eat out at different places every night than I enjoy.

I seem to recall AI was only really in the Caribbean back then.

I don’t remember it being a thing in the Mediterranean until much later on.

Not for me

This has given me an idea for a novel

‘The Vanilla Villas’

we only holiday in Villas, did AI a few times when the kids were younger but the ‘entertainment’ and buffets (and a fair few of the people) were not for us!

can I be in your book?! 😂

It's the breakfast buffet I'd miss. I bloody love a breakfast buffet!

What's wrong with saying you don't want to do AI? I don't want to be tied to the same place all the time - I want to try new places!

Absolutely nothing! Everyone has preferences. Nothing wrong with AI generally not being your preffered option.

It's the 'I'd rather go to prison', 'I would never do AI even if you paid me', 'sounds horrific, i'd rather stay home and sit in the rain' type comments that are hilarious.

I imagine these comments are from that same strange breed of people who huff and puff to drag a sofa away from a wall in a cottage, take pictures of the dust on the skirting behind where the sofa was then complain about it on TripAdvisor 😂 Always have to moan about something, incapable of making the best of an experience.

I think those people are just a little melodramatic.

My personal favourite is, "I would rather stick forks in my eyes". Of course I don't actually want to literally stick forks in my eyes!!

PumpkinPie2016 · 18/01/2025 22:35

It wouldn't work for me personally, but some people would enjoy that - each to their own.

Some people probably wouldn't like what we do for holidays/short breaks but it suits us as a family and we enjoy it.
One thing we love is a week in the Lake District - usually Feb or Oct. Don't go for big tourist things but for relaxing and lots of walks. Lots of people love it, lots would rather stay at home.

devongirl12 · 18/01/2025 22:36

It's not the type of holiday I would usually choose, but would probably enjoy it if I did.

I'm not a holiday snob and a lot of it sounds fun.

However, having now read your update that it was in 1985, I'm going to bet nostalgia is playing a huge part in your "best holiday ever" feelings.

Thereislightattheendofthetunnel · 18/01/2025 22:36

When was this OP? As PalmaNova as of today it’s pretty chilly.

I am certainly of the opinion that if the hotel is doing this there is probably a demand for it.

Other than that, Palma Nova has a long promenade next to the beach with plenty of little shops and even a McDonals, so even if you don’t like the shows you can always go out and explore, it’s not a prison.

CryJustALittleBit · 18/01/2025 22:37

TwistedWonder · 18/01/2025 22:27

Was AI a thing in the 80’s? Back when I used to go with my parents, most hotels in Spain were half board (breakfast and dinner)

Actually yes you’re very probably right here - I think it was breakfast and dinner

When my DC were young, this would have sounded great. I do rather wonder at your use of capitals here:

"VERY predominantly British guests"

Just what is wrong with having British guests?

Have you seen the behaviour of a sector of British holidaymakers?

Anyway I can surround myself with British people at home. I like to meet locals predominantly when I am on holiday.

GrumpyWombat · 18/01/2025 22:38

Absolutely not.

I get the feeling that when posters say they don't like the idea of holidaying with other Brits, what they really mean is working class people.

Is it only working class people who behave like actual tits from the moment they start downing pints in the airport bar at 7am???

Superior? It's superior to me because it's my personal preference. The main thing I like about self-catering is having your own space, with a living room and outdoor area to hang out in. I don't want to have to go to a bar to find a space to chill out and play games with my family.
I quite like cooking and dh loves it. He does most of the cooking on holiday.

Sounds delightfully retro. It’ll be a giggle. I loved “Benidorm” and it sounds just like that.

The world is divided into people who think a 'Benidorm' type holiday seems like a right giggle and those who think it sounds like the seventh circle of hell.

I am in the second camp. I've tried to be less Margot Leadbetter, I really have. But I just can't do it. 😂

Threeboystwocatsandadog · 18/01/2025 22:40

We went to Palma Nova when I was 15/16, so 1979/80. It was my first trip abroad and I loved it. I don’t think it was AI and there weren’t any fruit machines. I don’t really remember any any entertainment but I was more of an age to flirt with the waiters.

My boys would have loved your holiday as kids and therefore it would have been great for me too but I wouldn’t be interested in doing that sort of thing now.

Blogswife · 18/01/2025 22:41

I love Spain but this sounds like hell !!

It just sounds like being at home though.... sitting in a living room and having to cook and clean up.
