There are soooo many threads about class that are on this forum. I wondered how people actually identify.

I’m assuming there’s not too many upper class or aristocracy, or even royalty, and only have two options for the vote (I think).

So, YANBU is: Middle class
YABU is: Working class

Please vote! 😁

I'm pure class (IYKYK).

I’m glad you deigned to post on my thread 😁

Lower middle by upbringing and current lifestyle

My aspirations are more middle-middle, but life happened 😂

That doesn’t mean your real life acquaintance are not thinking about it though…

99% of people have far more on their minds than judging others on a ridiculous, outdated league table. Thankfully. It so sad that some people get so hung up on judging others to make themselves feel better.

I agree, although if you do think that working class is people with jobs, that would have to include the people mentioned above…

But working class doesn't mean people who have jobs.

KingOfPoundbury · 17/01/2025 21:42

One could not take part in your liitle vote as neither option was suitable.
Sorry.

But the younger generations will not continue to tolerate this BS. Things are changing & will continue to change. They've had it good for too long I think.

You may well be right, but I am sceptical - it has not changed that much in decades.

I’m an ‘Elite’ according to the BBC class calculator.

I actually was born sub-working class, grew up in care and was a teen mum. I would still consider myself to be working class, and feel like a ‘pretender’ now that I am financially comfortable. I hate the insinuation that WC people by definition cannot enjoy opera, theatre or museums.

Exactly - it's so ridiculous 🙄

I respectfully disagree. Although we are all thinking about much more important things, I think class is still very influential.

How many times can this question be discussed?!

Quite. Apparently for as long as a minority of people judge their self worth by comparing themselves to others.

It is exhausting thought. There are one or two threads on it every week. I think if the OPs just did a search, they would get a reasonable assessment of how users of Mumsnet (who care about such things like them) categorise themselves without asking again.

We just need to teach our children that it doesn't matter where you come from, anything is possible. I don't think getting stuck on social class is helpful for them. Have you done the BBC quiz?

I’ve always hated the class thing but a few months ago I was at an event with an eclectic bunch of people. Later in the evening this group of men walked in and they looked genetically posh (ex Sherborne boys school reunion - all looked like bankers). It was in that moment I realised that it’s not just about behaviour and no matter what I did I’d never be seen as part of that upper middle class set… I’m also completely fine with that 😂

I am not denying that certain aspects of perceived class are influential. But that isn't what your original post was about. You didn't start a discussion about how the remains of the old class system affects society. You asked what class members thought they were, repeating the many, many similar threads on the subject.

Exactly how did you think your original question was adding to the body of knowledge on the subject?

Do they mean the Elite of the working classes?

I think anyone can enjoy the arts and culture, from whatever background. Traditionally the middle and upper classes were simply more able to access them.

No, she doesn't mean that. Check out the calculator. Elite is the top social class - 7% of UK population. We're both in this top Elite class according to BBC but both identify as working class 😅

Namechangedcositsouting · 17/01/2025 21:58

Namechanged cuz evryone knows me dontcha knoww?! Grin

Grew up upper middle class, robbed shoulders and dined with some of the upper class, elites and royalty (not in this country, mind). Now I'd say I'm lower middle class or just in between classes, quite poor, on my own but relatively happier. Life happens!

No, I haven’t. Have you?

That is a good lesson to teach your children, but that fact remains that if you are born into a certain class or family you have much better chance at being Prime Minister.

I have to work for a living, ergo i am working class!

XxSideshowAuntSallyx · 17/01/2025 22:02

Upper middle by birth, or posh as some of my friends call me. I used to be ashamed of my background (even at my 'posh' boarding school I was bullied for being posh).

It doesn't actually bother me now, and in 2025 I think class is less noticeable.

According to the BBC, the Elite class

is is the wealthiest and most privileged group in the UK: They are the UK's biggest earners They score highest for social, cultural and economic factors Many went to private school and elite universities - 24% of people in this group were privately educated, far more than in any other class group This class is most likely to be found in London and the home counties This group is exclusive and very hard to join, most come from very privileged backgrounds 97% of people in this group own their own home.
