There are soooo many threads about class that are on this forum. I wondered how people actually identify.

I’m assuming there’s not too many upper class or aristocracy, or even royalty, and only have two options for the vote (I think).

So, YANBU is: Middle class
YABU is: Working class

Please vote! 😁

@ShowOfHands
I think you're right, you can't really change the class you are born into. The British class system is ever so complicated. For example David Beckham is loaded but still very much working class due to his upbringing. The Royal Family on the other hand, even if they lost every penny, would still be aristocrats.
Your DD sounds like she is middle class, but you are working class as a result of your upbringing.

I think there is a lot of truth in this.

Middle class, daahling.

I grew up working class.

Technically now though I tick a lot of the middle class socio-economic markers but we all know those don't matter, it's really your family history and who you know.

I laugh in the face of British middle class snobbery. Us working class oiks call this 'keeping it real'😂

What Mike Skinner called “Barratt class”

Who is Mike Skinner? What did he mean?

Class is irrelevant these days. I don't think young people would have a clue what you were talking about. Today instead of class we talk about money - the haves & have nots.

But if you think about how many MPs went to Eton, you’d surely have to disagree?

According to the BBC class calculator (who knew!!!), I'm 'technical middle class'.

Would you personally agree with that?

I'm arts & crafts me🤣 Heinz 57 weird mix of seriously working class & upper upper bordering on aristo. Family parties were amazing when I was a kid.

Sounds fascinating!

Oh I LOVE these threads where everyone lists their middle class credentials. So fun to read.

Haven't had one in a while 😀

Are we still counting humous-eating children as a marker of middle classness ? Or is that just MN 2004?

I could live until I am 200 years and still not understand the strange Mumsnet obsession with class. I'm already quite old and have never, ever come across a discussion about it in real life.

How many times can this question be discussed?!

Good question - thousands of times I think! 😄

You mean privately educated? Not specifically Eton. Yes, but I think that is fazing out now. Many are state efucated. And the BBC have just told me I'm in the Elite class anyhow 😜😅😅

gano · 17/01/2025 21:32

I'd say I'm upper working/lower middle. Own my own house and car, and have investments from a decent inheritance. Although I my income isn't huge (30k) and I didn't go to university. I always thought of myself as working class, but my "posh" friend thinks I'm more middle.

I think these days the working classes are allowed to eat humous, so it’s no longer an indication of class.

No, I do specifically mean Eton. And not just MPs, a lot of people with significant influence over our country went to school at Eton.

I think class does still have a major influence on our lives, even though it is certainly a lot more fluid than in the past.

I agree, although if you do think that working class is people with jobs, that would have to include the people mentioned above…

I dunno. My mum was middle, my dad working (by their own definition) but they separated and we grew up very poor. I also went to a fabulous private school on scholarship and on free school meals. I've earned well and am early retired at 50 with lots of savings. My dad's a criminal. I know lots of people who are educated and poor and uneducated and rich. I think these definitions are bullshit tbh

But the younger generations will not continue to tolerate this BS. Things are changing & will continue to change. They've had it good for too long I think.
