Newfoundland dog in hospital - whatever next?

Not that I know my breeds, but Newfoundland was the closest I could find in Google. Whatever it was, it was large and very furry and should not be in a hospital.

You can see it's not being used as a service dog by the way it's being led.

This "my dog has to go everywhere" stupid craze has to end now.

I did read the thread FFS. It was a joke.

Clearly no sense of humour.

Signed a poster who has a service dog that is also a registered therapy dog and the dog frequently goes in hospitals. In fact he'll be in one next week.

Edited

OMG, I'm so sorry, I thought you were serious... 😳I can't apologise enough.

Thank you - you do a brilliant job. My Dad spent 4 years in a care home and he loved the regular dog visits there, it meant the world to us that he got to cuddle a dog regularly.

@PlopSofa I recognise your name from other dog threads...you've been pissing over happy/funny dog threads because your son is scared of dogs.

I don't see how you can 'appreciate' therapy dogs as you hadn't even heard of them on the last thread I saw you on.

You are definitely anti-dog, and anti-dog owners too.

I'm the one who stupidly backed her up on there and told her about PaT dogs, thinking it might help her child's phobia, she did indeed claim not to be aware of them...

Now I'm left red-faced again for believing it was fear motivated not just hate.

Lou670 · 17/01/2025 16:41

@CoubousAndTourmalet Don't be red faced. I didn't realize who the poster was either. I did read the thread about a dog messing over a shopping bag and didn't realize it was the same poster. She should be red faced at this point as people now know who she is and what threads she is stomping all over with her skewed viewpoints.

PlopSofa · 17/01/2025 17:04

CoubousAndTourmalet · 17/01/2025 14:10

Have you actually read the full thread? Dd you see that this particular female Newfoundland dog is a known PaT dog? Have a look at the bottom of page 5 on this thread. A poster called friendschild.

I've shown you compassion before about your child's dog phobia, but your own lack of compassion and comprehension on this thread is astounding.

You most definitely are anti-dog.

That’s an update on page 5 I was unaware of. Apologies for not reading this.

If this is a therapy dog that’s fine.

I like dogs 😊

PlopSofa · 17/01/2025 17:07

Hold on I know nothing about a dog on another thread that’s peed on someone. That’s got nothing to do with me.

I can apologise when I get things wrong as I have just done.

Whoever that is, don’t falsely accuse me. It’s got nothing to do with me.

MassiveSalad22 · 17/01/2025 17:11

The dog is cute but come on, it’s so selfish - many people hate dogs, I was in a shop the other day and a lady fell to the floor because a dog came in and she was so scared, and she had an epileptic fit. Obviously the chances of that sort of thing as sooooo much higher in a hospital.

Therapy dogs should have some identifier on them, like a guide dog would do.

Dog lovers’ preferences shouldn’t trump all.

MumblesParty · 17/01/2025 15:30

@Lou670 yeah that poster being a smart-arse, trying to imply I didn’t know what I was talking about. My post was basically saying that in a world that seems to focus excessively on H&S, I found it shocking that dogs were allowed in hospitals. I was expressing an opinion. I never said it didn’t happen or that I wasn’t aware of it. Clearly @CoubousAndTourmalet doesn't like people to have opinions. Strange really, but MN is full of strange people!

All I did was express surprise that you were unaware of therapy dogs that visit hospitals and care homes.

I didn't say you were not allowed to have an opinion.

I'm not sure if your post is a personal attack on me but I don't think it reflects very well on you, given that you are a doctor. I'm autistic and socially anxious so I don't read social cues well at all - did you earburn me just so I could have the pleasure of seeing you call me a smart-arse and strange? How very professional of you.

I'm not sure it is; someone else named another poster, I think it was a vegan person that loves badgers, this is a different poster.
I feel like I've had enough of all this now, it's making me panic and say stupid things. Had enough abuse tbh.
Just sick of all the dog hate on here.

Therapy dogs wear a badge on their collar, you don't know if this particular dog has one as it's a poor blurred photo but someone has said they know this is a PaT dog.

Maybe the dog knew she was going to have an epileptic seizure.

I am embarrassed for you. Of course therapy dogs are ok. And as for using black people as an analogy for dogs, I have no words.

Disabled people have assistance dogs, not therapy dogs. No need to be embarrassed for me, but perhaps you should educate yourself.

I didn't. I used racism as a comparison with ableism. I hope that helps you understand.

Mikiamo · 17/01/2025 19:01

PlopSofa · 17/01/2025 13:56

I am not anti dog at all.

Thats not fair.

I said I appreciate therapy dogs and have no problem with them being hospitals.

Look at my previous post to you.

I do object to a large dog unattended in a hospital because they can carry salmonella and ESBL.

The poster said a trolley with a patient on it had to stop because the dog was in the way.

You both know a dog should not be wondering around a hospital like this.

But I’m called anti-dog.

I wonder what he was wondering...?

MissMoneyFairy · 17/01/2025 19:13

Mikiamo · 17/01/2025 19:01

I wonder what he was wondering...?

Wondering why someone was taking a photo of it, you can clearly see it's on a lead so not really wondering if it will wander off

No problem - I just thought a bit of levitry might diffuse the tension. Obviously read the room wrong! I'm glad it helped your dad - dogs have a very calming influence on people.

Actually more than a few of us have "both" so perhaps you should educate yourself? Many of us are also volunteers with our dogs because there is a severe shotage of dogs trained to such high standards. I know of over a dozen people with assistance dogs who are also registered as therapy dogs and regualrly visit a range of facilities.

It was inappropriate to suggest a correlation between dogs of any sort and black people. Perhaps you should rethink that and apologise?

I wasn't talking to you, so not sure why you're getting arsey. I'm more than aware of therapy dogs, seeing as I used to have one.

I won't apologise, no. I was comparing ableism with racism. For some reason, no one gives a shit about ableism, yet it's the same level of "protected" as racism.

bozzabollix · 17/01/2025 21:28

EmmaMaria · 17/01/2025 16:00

We visit a local care home weekly. He loves it because they have the best treats and are sneaky at slipping him "extras".

I bet he loves it and they do too. So beneficial.

CoubousAndTourmalet · 17/01/2025 21:29

My parents had dogs of their own @EmmaMaria, their last boy died shortly before my Dad started with the Alzheimer's, so he was a big dog lover, always. After they had the monthly therapy dog visits he liked to tell me about the dogs that came in. He loved the big ones best because we're Pyrenean people.

(Still very embarrassed about not getting your sarcasm earlier. Really sorry).

If someone has that extreme a reaction to something so everyday they need professional help. We wouldn’t clear cars off a street, birds off a tree and planes from the sky.

I teach people to drive, most are initially terrified of large vehicles coming near them, I teach them to cope with and eradicate that fear. On your logic I should have a massive sign at the top of the car saying ‘large vehicles please keep your distance’.

We all need to be able to work around a normal world and if we can’t do that we need professional help.

Trust me, most people don't give a shit about racism either.

I can't even imagine how.hard it must be to be a black dog.

I think everybody should have right to the therapy animal of their choice on their deathbed. It would make for a very special hospital. Clare Balding could have a racehorse bedded down next to her. David Attenborough could have some ring-tailed lemurs eating his grapes.

I am not sure how we could help that South-African bloke who made the My Octopus Teacher film though.

I doubt that the overstretched NHS would be in a position to accommodate this.

abracadabra1980 · 18/01/2025 14:03

Wow- defnifley a Newfoundland - what a sighting! They are the epitome of beauty and kindness. I'd be overjoyed to see a Newfoundland plodding anywhere.

If you are posting on a public forum then you are talking to everyone on that forum. If you want to be arsey with people privately, then take it off a public forum.

And it is insulting and offensive, to say nothing of downright untrue, to say that nobody cares about ableism. Nobody was saying that people with disabilities don't or shouldn't have the same "protections" as people of other races. But it is not the same thing as racism, nothing like, and it is deeply offensive to both groups of people to suggest that they are the same.

abracadabra1980 · 18/01/2025 21:38

@CoubousAndTourmalet Agreed! I was 'hiding' within my post as I actually have one of my own. A Newfie was my dream, a tickbox breed; I waited four whole years to get her. She's been asked to be a PAT dog for a care home- we've just had a reference passed from my vet 😜

Awww, that's great - I'm so glad you got your dream dog. Congratulations - she'll be an amazing PAT dog, I bet everyone will love her!

Giant breeds are just the best! I have a Pyrenean girl and she's really done wonders for my anxiety, which is my own reason for being so invested in this thread.
