To have difficulty getting a reference…

I interviewed for a job yesterday and got given it on the condition of my references coming back as ‘good’. The problem I’m having is actually sourcing 2 appropriate references, I have my current employer which is fine but the employers before that were nearly 10 years ago and I have no contact with them. I worked for a large retail chain, where the management has almost certainly changed and won’t have a clue who I am, alternatively I did a volunteer placement in the sector that I’m now in but the management there has also moved hands and it was such a small company. I asked about a character references but they said they normally ask for previous employers, it just seems like a big ask though when you’re previous employment was 10 years ago! Has anyone been in this position and found a way around it!

HR should still have your details.

The reference could be basic like she worked here from x date to y date.

2 from same company? Different roles?

Just give them the details of HR from the previous company and let them sort it. They dont need to know you, it's mostly a box ticking exercise. This happens all the time, don't worry about it.

Congrats on the new role!
