He had no trousers on?

I saw this photo in the guardian today and had to give a double take because I initially thought the man on the right had no trousers on! I was a bit shocked until I realised he did! they r just beige!

Then I saw there was a woman to the right who actually doesn't have any trousers on and I had no reaction.

Then I wondered - what the hell? Why is my reaction so different to a partially naked man as it is to a partially naked women?

Of course, she does have some kind of skirt or shorts or something I'm sure! But I know if the man had dressed like this I'd have felt really shocked, whereas I don't feel anything much towards seeing a woman dressed like this.

Why do some women where clothes which reveal their legs and men don't? What's this about?

Also - why do some women dress 'sexy' in the workplace but men don't?

No AIBU really, just was surprised at my horrified reaction to a man with no trousers on, when I didn't bat an eyelid for the woman.

What's going on!? Any thoughts!

I thought at first that you were going to say you were on the London Underground and it was No Trousers Tube Day! 😂

MovingBird123 · 15/01/2025 17:17

😂Thank you for the giggle!

But also, I don't think she's wearing enough clothes for a professional setting. Although I dress modestly, so my eye is used to different things.

We have male and female Posties, both often wear shorts, neither have nicely shaped legs imo. I would prefer that both covered their legs. Not that anyone will ask me.

Posties do that because of the rain so they don’t have wet trousers that never dry. Not sure why it offends you though?!

women do it to themselves! Wear as little as possible for attention. Just look at the music videos now and 20 years ago. No one tells Beyoncé to wear a skimpy outfit on the stage, she still would be an amazing popular artist with just her voice. Then all her fans follow because they think this is what it takes to be desired by the crowd.
women just adapt any crap that turns up on the market - shave everything, pluck your eyebrows, pump your face with fillers, hair extentions, nails, put a fake tan on- no normal, emotionally mature man expects that! Women are not expected to do that but we still do it to chase the “beauty standards” and stupidly apply all that crap to our bodies !

This is sidetracking from the original issue. But women in music videos absolutely do not just decide completely independently of anyone else what to wear. Of course they aren't all hapless victims with no agency. But there is a whole team of record company/PR people who decide someone's "look". Beyonce is super powerful and rich so she isn't the best example. But on the whole the power balance between a young singer desperate to make it and the record label/producers is not in the singer's favour.
If you are interested look at the difference between the aesthetics of female RandB/hiphop singers in the 90s and how that evolved through the 2000s. The most influential movers and shakers in that industry at the time were men. Men including (but not only) R Kelly, JayZ, Pdiddy as well as a host of people behind the scenes who would have known the worst of what was happening and done nothing.

Again. Not all women are hapless victims. Lots of women enjoy wearing short skirts etc and actively choose to. I don't want to live in a sack. But equally Aaliyah didn't decide to sing "age ain't nothing but a number" in a vacuum.

Thats really different to a PR woman choosing not to wear tights. I don't think it works as a comparison. But wanted to counter what you said!

Whenever I see someone when I'm out and about wearing flesh coloured leggings or trousers,I have to do a double take as I always think they're wearing nothing on their bottom half!

Elsvieta · 18/05/2025 19:50

I suppose we react differently because if a man was going about in public with no trousers, it would seem like very obvious perviness (I have experienced one case where it was dementia, but you'd definitely think perviness with a younger man). Whereas women do sometimes go about in public with way too much on display and whether we approve or not we probably don't worry that she's planning to sexually assault someone or is actually dangerous.
