He had no trousers on?

I saw this photo in the guardian today and had to give a double take because I initially thought the man on the right had no trousers on! I was a bit shocked until I realised he did! they r just beige!

Then I saw there was a woman to the right who actually doesn't have any trousers on and I had no reaction.

Then I wondered - what the hell? Why is my reaction so different to a partially naked man as it is to a partially naked women?

Of course, she does have some kind of skirt or shorts or something I'm sure! But I know if the man had dressed like this I'd have felt really shocked, whereas I don't feel anything much towards seeing a woman dressed like this.

Why do some women where clothes which reveal their legs and men don't? What's this about?

Also - why do some women dress 'sexy' in the workplace but men don't?

No AIBU really, just was surprised at my horrified reaction to a man with no trousers on, when I didn't bat an eyelid for the woman.

What's going on!? Any thoughts!

He had no trousers on?

I would be more worried about being in the same room as Farage.

Thank God he had his trousers on

I don't know what you're on about. She's clearly wearing shorts or a skirt, it's hard to see it clearly because it's black. It's not even that short. The man is wearing a suit jacket, it would be very weird for a man to wear anything other than long trousers with a shirt, tie and jacket.

Exactly. So why is this!? Why would it be weird for a man to wear little short shorts that reveal his legs!! (and of course it would be!) Why is society like this!? that women in this environment feel this is an appropriate way to dress yet men absolutely wouldn't feel that way.

I had a corporate job and never dressed 'sexy' as I wanted to be taken seriously...
However, I went on mat leave, returned and the office slag got promoted over me.
Everyone agreed that she was useless but she was more popular with the all male bosses (2 of which she had affairs with...)
So, I can totally see why women feel they need to be attractive in the work place.

So sad we love in a world where this is a thing

I also don't understand why female actors and 'celebrities' feel the need to walk down the red carpet with everythhing on display. You never see Brad Pitt at a premier wearing a see through suite with his pants on display. Whatever happened to class and elegance?

Yeah, I sometimes think this too

The very last thing I was expecting or wanted to see when I opened this thread was a large picture of N F.

What are you on about she does t have trousers on because she has a skirt on. Your shocked because you don’t see male legs in the workplace usually Nowt to do with looking sexy men don’t in the majority wear skirts or shorts to an office.

"Has it ever occurred to you that these women might WANT to wear the clothes they're wearing?"

Why would you want to have bare legs in cold weather? As soon as I read op's first sentence I was about to answer with 'but what about the woman...' Reading on I feel the same as the OP.

And my answer would be women who believe dressing like that is just them being independent/ progressive is just pure internalised misogyny. Ultimately it's for the male's gaze, if it wasn't serving the patriarchy it wouldn't have been normalised.

However, I found that post interesting -

"Men with no trousers = flashers or sexual predator = be on high alert.
Women with no trousers = normal Friday/Saturday night = ignore.
It's all down to self preservation."

thanks for giving me a different pov @AwaitingFreedom (although I haven't completely changed my mind).

I think I agree with all of your post!

Neither of them seem to have hit the tone for the event, they look like 6th formers who've been invited along.

True!!!

Why does anyone think people who support Farage have any judgement?

HeySinnerman · 15/01/2025 13:06

Wandering off topic to the bloke in the striped shirt, beige trousers and maroon (?) jacket combo.
There is an indepdenent menswear shop that only Nigel Farage or Micheal Portillo might purchase from. We have long held the belief that the shop might be some sort of money laundering affair, but clearly there are people out there who buy that sort of far right yuppy clothing from the 80s.

I have never asked a male colleague’s advice on how I should dress for work. I decide what to wear.
If some women dress for male approval that is their choice, nothing to do with me.
If they succeed in attracting a man by the way they dress how likely are they to be able to hang on to him?
Not very. 😉.

renoleno · 15/01/2025 13:42

I find it odd this notion that women dress a certain way only to attract men, and it's all patriarchy. There's lesbians who wear short shorts and short skirts, and lipstick and aren't interested in men. The most scandalous work clothing I ever saw women wear was at a high fashion brand that was 98% women and gay men. When I worked in the middle east, I was once invited to a party with just women who were wearing the abaya, who all stripped down to really slinky, revealing dresses the minute they were in the company of trusted women friends.

There's a power and confidence that comes from looking good - which is why military uniforms are smart and well fit/cleaned/tailored, not trackie bottoms and stained Ts. For many women this translates to clothes that show off the parts of their body and personality they love. The woman in the photo has great, strong thighs and I don't blame her for wanting to show it off in whatever setting she chooses. To me she looks strong, is standing confidently and I'd (maybe unfairly) trust her competence more than someone who seemed uncomfortable in their own skin, or blended into the background. The same way I don't judge a man for wearing an expensive, 3 piece tailored suit when everyone else is more casual, just because he wants to feel his best. It was men who decided work wear should be boring, covered up suits and ugly shoes, the same way they decided feminine clothing was 'unserious' and we've all drunk the kool aid and think the same. So I'm relieved so many large corporates have moved to casual wear allowing people to showcase their personalities. All the cool web and mobile apps we use have been developed by people wearing hoodies to work. My male boss, a Director at one of the largest tech companies used to wear flip flops in the summer. So now everytime i find myself shocked by something a woman or man wears, I have to check my own biases and question whether I'm being blinkered.

It's not weird if they are wearing a t-shirt. Shorts are generally considered casual wear for men, so to be wearing a very formal top half and a very informal bottom half would look odd. It would be equally jarring if he was wearing cargo trousers or tracksuit bottoms.

Women have a wider range of formal "bottoms", and that includes skirts of varying lengths. From what I can see of her outfit, she has chosen an altogether less formal look than the man.

H34th · 15/01/2025 14:23

"I find it odd this notion that women dress a certain way only to attract men, and it's all patriarchy."

I don't think anybody said that. The point that's being made is that patriarchy normalised women dressing in a much more revealing way, than they would ever normalise for men.

It's funny reading some of the posts trying to justify it with 'it would be odd for a man', 'shorts are not formal for men', 'men wear flip-flops',... and stopping there without further questioning.

She looks silly and totally unprofessional. She'll be laughed at behind her back and is probably cold. Then again she's a climate change denier so...

No she doesn't.
Telling women they can't wear stuff is just as bad as expecting them to wear it.

BySpryRubyBee · 15/01/2025 14:37

Nobody is saying she can’t wear it. She can and she did. In the bar afterwards she would have looked great, it’s not about her or the outfit, it’s just about being able to match your style of dress to the occasion and in this case she hasn’t managed it.

Yes, this. Everyone else is dressed more conservatively, while her outfit is more social.

Honestly, my immediate reaction was that she looks unprofessional. I've been working in offices for 30 years and have never seen a woman dress like that. It would raise eyebrows if someone dressed like that in my office, male or female.

I see we are still judging women on their clothing choices.

Just as you would judge a man in that situation if he was wearing short shorts.

OchreHedgehog · 15/01/2025 16:35

She's a london pr girl. Thats how they dress. She hasn't laddered her tights or missed the dress code for the event. Everyone in that room is posh and perfectly comfortable with each other's attire. The OPs reaction is normal as we don't expect men to wear skirts or have bare legs. Same as we don’t expect deep sea divers to wear lounge suits. Yes there's patriarchy in there but that's life. Women wear skirts. Men don't. Sorry but this is a non story!!
