How many times to pass driving test?

Ionasmum19 · 14/01/2025 16:17

Ive failed my driving test for the second time today and I'm so disappointed in myself! Got me curious, how many times did it take others to pass? I feel like giving up now!!

OP posts:

I passed first time, so did 20yo DD. It’s luck of the draw with examiners if I’m honest! DD’s best friend did a far better test than her overall but failed over something that most examiners would turn a blind eye to (didn’t put the car in park after a real life emergency stop). It was to the point that her driving instructor put a formal complaint in.

DD on the other hand had far more minor marks, mounted a kerb during one of her manoeuvres and still managed to pass thanks to a sympathetic examiner..!

HundredMilesAnHour · 14/01/2025 17:33

I passed first time at 17. Lessons only (my parents couldn't afford to pay the extra insurance for me to be on their car).

But my Dad is a petrolhead and ex-racing/mechanic so I was immersed in cars from childhood. I would never have handled the grief if I'd failed my test. The earache I would have got doesn't even bear thinking about!

PrincessHoneysuckle · 14/01/2025 17:35

3 for me

EastEndQueen · 14/01/2025 17:35

Keep going OP!

I failed three on a manual in my early 20s (I forget for what now but I never really got the hang of it, think the instructor just booked me the test as he was sick of the sight of me). Then gave up for over a decade.

Restarted last year at 36 on an automatic, failed my first on an idiotic mistake LEAVING THE TEST CAR PARK! Had to do the rest of the test knowing I had failed. Passed second time - I think it was really touch and go but anyway. I definitely feel I am actually learning to drive now I am on my own. Still haven’t developed confidence with motorways or very large complex junctions (I live in London and it is horrid) but I’ll get there.

The one thing that helped me was practicing outside my lessons with DH. I didn’t get anything like enough of this as work/ DC but the little that I had made a huge difference

passed on fifth attempt

@XenoBitch

I didn't even tell anyone I was doing lessons . The only one that knew was my husband.

When my daughter started lessons last year , we didn’t tell anyone , only me , her and her dad knew until she passed her test . She’s a very private person .

Bigearringsbigsmile · 14/01/2025 17:43

4 times! Took me 20 years.

Catza · 14/01/2025 17:46

I think 3 or 4. Can't remember exactly now. Passing the first time is not very common in either case so keep going. Top tip from my instructor is to book the first test of the day.
My cousin passed on her 7th. My aunt passed the first time but she was taking lessons for three years.

Hell no don’t quit!
I passed first go ( Bristol) but my friend ( Bristol and at same test centre passed on her 7 th go.

My son passed in his 2nd as did my brother .
my other brother passed 3rd time.

( He cried when he failed a second time, but no shame in passing third go.

Watch lots of You tube vids! Good luck - what are your weak areas?
Work on those 👍

What is so ironic, mum and I passed first go ( probably the less confident drivers) but the men in the family passed second or third time-

We try not to crow about it too much! 😂

I passed first time but my sister passed on her 15th attempt, she just fell apart during the tests but I admire her for not giving up

Petrine · 14/01/2025 18:06

I passed first time.

Ionasmum19 · 14/01/2025 16:27

It was a silly mistake, it was a set of double lights and I got through the first one at green but the next changed to red so I stopped, turned out they were connected lights that both changed at the same time and I shouldn't have stopped at the second light!! So annoyed!

My ex husband failed ( at 17) because he was asked to “ Take the next available left turn, and he turned at the first left into a no entry ⛔️ road..

He passed second time and was always aware after that about no entry signs!

AmateurNoun · 14/01/2025 18:13

I passed first time but I shouldn't have. I am fundamentally unsafe on the roads. I would have run a red light the week before my test if my instructor hadn't slammed the breaks and I nearly crashed on a roundabout just before the test. My parents wanted me to pass even though I was obviously terrible. I haven't driven since.

You could this as comfort that driving tests aren't that great at testing drivers 🤷‍♀️

Yirk · 14/01/2025 18:14

5th time, I did it the fifth time in my own car, felt more relaxed.

Member984815 · 14/01/2025 18:20

The answer is do it until you pass

wendywoopywoo222 · 14/01/2025 18:20

I passed first time, had ten lessons one a week after I turned 17 and was on the road 3 months later.

That was 43 years ago so no theory test, just a few Highway Code questions.

oakleaffy · 14/01/2025 18:21

Rachie1973 · 14/01/2025 16:30

Eek. I have my first test booked for end of April at the age of 52. I’m not sure what I was thinking really!

Best of luck 🤞
You can do it!!
Your instructor wouldn’t put you in for the test if he didn’t think you were ready.

Keepingittogetherstepbystep · 14/01/2025 18:21

My 1st test was 10 days after my friends were involved in a fatal crash, I failed and was a bag if nerves. Lots of expectations as everyone knew.

Passed 2nd time, didn't tell anyone about it and took a lot of kalms tablets.

Don't give up

HollaHolla · 14/01/2025 18:22

I was first time, both in the UK (at 17), and then in Australia (at 22). Also my Advanced Driving Test. Drove for almost 30 years without incident. Then, in the last 2 years, I've hit a wall whilst reversing, scraped the underside of the car on a high kerb, and also scraped the door on a pillar. I blame menopause. I can't suddenly have become a terrible driver?!

My sister was 3rd time, and my brother either 4th or 5th. But they got there! As will you. 😀

Ketzele · 14/01/2025 18:24

I passed on my second try, over thirty years ago, and haven't driven since!

7!

the final test was going to be my final
test! On my second test, it was the same guy who finally passed me, I watched him add extra minors on my paper before telling me I’d failed. But with no major faults, just too many minors!! But was livid after I watched him mark them down at the end of the test, like they were made up!! I’ll add to this that before the test, he asked me which team I supported because I told him the previous night I’d watched the team to relax because he’d asked me to make conversation. Let’s just say our teams are huge rivals (think Celtic/rangers) and I think it went against me!

When I eventually passed, it was the same examiner!

That’s absolutely awful- Poor friends.
No wonder you were nervous- Anyone would be in those circumstances.

Like last year , those four young lads in a car that came off the road in Wales-

There was talk of not allowing young and newly qualified drivers to be able to carry passengers for at least six months after passing a test- very good idea, I think.

Comedycook · 14/01/2025 18:27

I passed on my third attempt....keep going op!
