to be "coffee badging" when I'm working from home

Just read something on social about the 'new' trend of coffee badging - where you go into the office, grab a coffee, get seen by your boss and then leave to work from home - but ...loads of people log on to their work computer when they're WFH, fire off an email, go to one teams meeting, then leave and put the washing on, etc...during work hours. It's basically coffee badging from home??? Personally, my number one job that I get done when I WFH is the washing (would be higher than bunkbeds if I went into the office). I do get my paid work done. But AIBU to do life/home stuff as well, am I coffee badging from home?

I don't get this at all...so as in, show your face then go home and no one realises? How does that even work?

We work two days in the office a week and my boss is in those same two days. He would absolutely notice if I said 'morning!' at 9am and then was nowhere to be found by 10 😂

I'm amazed by all these jobs that seem to involve so little actual work! I have to log a minimum number of chargeable hours a day (lawyer) so no option to slack off. If WFH i will unload the dishwasher or do a quick tidy while the kettle is boiling but that's about it.

Coffee badging wouldn't work in our office either as there is a record of who has swiped in and out of the building and when. Plus a daily ticket for my commute is £72 (thanks Great Western) so if I've paid to come in to London I'm going to plonk my arse down and stay for the day!

They’re making it up. Most of these people don’t have a clue about WFH or hybrid. It’s froth.

Why does everything need a nonsensical name?

i agree.

I’m still scratching my head too.

What has coffee and badging got to do with not working.

please explain how these words represent what is being described.

also I have never used the word ‘badging’ before.

RedRiverShore5 · 15/01/2025 11:20

I just googled, the badge refers to the identity badge for swiping in and it's similar to when school kids used to nip out after the register.

its not even about this ‘coffee badging’ bollocks. This thread is here to have another round of having a pop at people who WFH because WFH was invented in 2020 and = skiving. Poor performance is a management issue wherever it occurs. And people bitching about skivers, in my experience, very often have no idea about the work that person is actually tasked to do or the agreed circumstances in which they do their work. They see what they want to see.

I'm going to relabel having a pop at people who work from home as rescue forking. It makes about as much sense as coffee badging.

MurdoMunro · 15/01/2025 15:34

@CherryFlan ’rescue forking’ 😆 Forking about? Performance forking? And us hybrids, bi-forking? Coffee forkers?

Hmm1234 · 15/01/2025 18:15

I love coffee badging might aswell get a badge for stamping my costa/ Nero card for the inconvenience of having to go into the office

FedUp2025 · 15/01/2025 18:34

I coffee badge from home. Do my work in the mornings then tend to clock off PM and work 'light'just answering my mobile if anyone calls. DH (who's on sick leave having cancer treatment) and I tend to take the dog for a long walk. Or I catch up on my housework or even just watch daytime TV.
As long as all the targets are met the manager gives no fecks.
And why not. I'm no one's slave.
Of course I take my full time salary.
Come find me

Islandgirl68 · 15/01/2025 19:45

@pearlbeach don't think there is anything wrong with that, wether in an office or WFH, everyone should be taking breaks. Getting up every so often to walk about and giving your eyes a break from the screen. Nothing wrong with spending 5 mins here and there doing the washing. But shouldn't be cleaning your house from top to bottom.

JackGrealishsCalves · 15/01/2025 19:49

Well considering it takes me at least an hour to get into the office I really don't think I would be stupid enough to do that coffee thing as I'd lose 2 hours of my day

Bowies · 15/01/2025 21:13

This seems very stupid, what’s the point of commuting in to the office just to be seen with a coffee?

I would anticipate creating an expectation of further face to face contact, but the whole thing (if real) seems a huge waste of time and energy.

Why not WFH and get an extra hour’s work out the way in lieu of commuting?

(i imagined this was sticking a coffee emoji on Teams when you go off to boil the kettle!)

Anniedash · 15/01/2025 21:19

This, ladies and gentlemen, is the why work from pisstake is slowly becoming a thing of the past. It’s why people are being called back into the office.

Why does it surprise you, most of these people work in the public sector, that’s why this country is so messed up. Even private sector productivity is through the floor.

Those who can avoid working do so through calling themselves mentally ill. Those who can’t get away with that one just rob a wage through work from home. MN is full of these threads.

Powderblue1 · 15/01/2025 21:31

My company are really flexible and happy for us to do a load of washing and sort house jobs while at home as long as we get our work done.

That’s me you’re talking about. I work in public sector, technical specialist and there’s a national shortage of people qualified in what I do
and prepared to do it in public service. I am one of 2 that do my work and I guarantee that if I slacked off at home you would notice within 3 to 6 weeks, no need wait for my manager to spot it. You’re placing your anger and blame on the wrong heads.

StMick · 14/01/2025 13:32

Some people do this in my office. They tend to stay in the office till lunchtime then head home and log back on. No idea if they've agreed this with their manager or not.

A few of us do this to avoid the evening rush hour.

Marine30 · 15/01/2025 22:03

There are some real twits on social media. Probably came up with that stupid expression ‘coffee badging’ on someone else’s time 🙄.

Treesandsheepeverywhere · 15/01/2025 22:14

Work shy.

MurdoMunro · 15/01/2025 22:17

Who? It’s made up. Silly TikTok nonsense.

Schmusimausi73 · 15/01/2025 22:35

I’m a teacher. I’d love to be able to coffee badge 😝

3luckystars · 14/01/2025 21:11

I agree. It’s completely stupid.

coffee barking
coffee bowling
coffee blinking
coffee beeping

It’s just making things up and joining words together. Just call it dossing.

In fact coffee has got nothing to do with it either! You can be seen and then skive off without coffee getting a look in. Completely random phrase!

3luckystars · 15/01/2025 23:04

yeah I hate coffee but love dossing 😂
