to be "coffee badging" when I'm working from home

Just read something on social about the 'new' trend of coffee badging - where you go into the office, grab a coffee, get seen by your boss and then leave to work from home - but ...loads of people log on to their work computer when they're WFH, fire off an email, go to one teams meeting, then leave and put the washing on, etc...during work hours. It's basically coffee badging from home??? Personally, my number one job that I get done when I WFH is the washing (would be higher than bunkbeds if I went into the office). I do get my paid work done. But AIBU to do life/home stuff as well, am I coffee badging from home?

If you're the kind of tosser who takes advantage you'll do it anywhere

It's surely much harder to take the piss when people can actually see you?

needhelpwiththisplease · 14/01/2025 17:41

Is it a novelty to just do what you are paid to do in your working hours??

GargoylesofBeelzebub · 14/01/2025 17:51

Most workplaces require you to swipe in and out and if they are trying to get people back into the office are monitoring those. So "coffee badging" won't work.

Cece92 · 14/01/2025 18:02

I do hybrid working and I'm guilty of doing washing, dishes etc. however I do not take lunch breaks at home or anything. At work I'm too busy yapping to people lol! Saying that my work is always done and I'm always jumping to help others with theirs. My manager doesn't give a toot she also does it and will take time out to walk her dog. She also never comes to office on time is always later because she needs to take her youngest to school but equally she's still a great manager xxx

Ok, so I’m looking for a job where I could do something like this post mat leave.

Please tell me which jobs they are.

lemmein · 14/01/2025 18:11

We used to go into school for registration then piss off for the rest of the day. We used to just call it nicking off though. No coffee was involved!

(By 'we' I mean pupils, not teachers Grin)

zerogrey · 14/01/2025 18:14

I'm sorry, what?!

Franjipanl8r · 14/01/2025 18:23

More fool any woman who gives themselves the task of simultaneously working and doing domestic chores. When I’m working I’m working. Just like my DH.

I assumed it was something to do with badgers. I would go into the office more frequently if they got a badger. Who wouldn't love that?

My cat would object.

Mnetcurious · 14/01/2025 18:30

I don’t understand the point of ‘coffee badging’ - surely if you’ve made the effort and spent the time and money to get to the office you may as well stay there?!
Yanbu to put your washing on at home, but I don’t agree with taking the mick and I tend to more or less (sometimes more if I’m v busy) actually work my hours when at home.

RedRiverShore5 · 14/01/2025 18:35

I doubt any men that wfh would be getting excited about being able to put a wash on and fill the dishwasher, some of these posts make it seem the highlight of the day.

HeismanPose · 14/01/2025 18:37

Coffee badgering just sounds ridiculous, going all the way into the office just to come home?!

just depends on the job I suppose re flex at home, I’ve wfh for years pre Covid, I’ve had jobs where every minute was recorded and you had to check out to go to the loo etc and my current job is incredibly flex, as long as the work gets done by the deadline my boss is okay with people taking time out for various things during the day.

RedRiverShore5 · 14/01/2025 18:38

Maybe they are rushing home to put the washing on

I don’t get excited about putting the washing on per se, just that it’s one less job to do in the evening so more of my time back.
My husband does as much housework as I do, including cleaning the bathrooms - I’d understand if he thought it was cool that he could have a quick blitz of the downstairs loo between meetings!

Some people do this in my office. They tend to stay in the office till lunchtime then head home and log back on. No idea if they've agreed this with their manager or not.

I do it (well leave early afternoon) and yes I have agreed it. Precisely so that I didn't have to stay in the office until last knockings. That was pre-covid though.

Means I am home by 4pm which is more more civilised than 7pm.

Must be a fire safety nightmare not knowing if staff are in the building or not. Especially if you've seen them an hour earlier and now they're nowhere to be found.

This is a very good point. My office requires swiping in to both the communal lobby then into our office suite of rooms, but no swiping out. It's just buttons to activate the out doors and the barrier in the lobby auto opens for those exiting.

chaosmaker · 14/01/2025 21:07

isn't work just so people have an income. doesn't matter where you do it if it's just a computer based thing, surely?
Important jobs that need doing you have to be there in person

Where does the 'badging' part of this ridiculous phrase come from? I don't do TikTok and have never heard of it, but can see no relevance to a badge.

I agree. It’s completely stupid.

coffee barking
coffee bowling
coffee blinking
coffee beeping

It’s just making things up and joining words together. Just call it dossing.

bloodredfeaturewall · 14/01/2025 21:11

how would that even work if you have to clock in and out with your badge.

MrsPeregrine · 14/01/2025 21:19

Sorry, don’t believe you. I think this is just another post from one of the anti-WFH brigade.

I WFH part of the week and would never even entertain the idea of doing something like this. No one in my organisation would because we have to much to get done in the day and it would be noticed.
Everyone can see when we are online and working and it wouldn’t be obvious if you aren’t pulling your weight because the work wouldn’t be done.

Tommarvolo · 14/01/2025 21:24

I trained my dog to log onto teams and hit a copy and paste comment that says the camera isn't working. Then I trained him to make a hmmm sound so it works well to convince people I am there and listening and I am not a dog. The only problem is when I have to do a presentation because he cannot work out how to screen share despite many many training sessions, but that makes him most believable as a colleague.

CarefulN0w · 14/01/2025 21:35

Bless you. Sending one email when working from home is strictly for amateurs. Pros know that you need to programme outlook to send emails at random intervals throughout the day to look like you are hard at it.

MurdoMunro · 15/01/2025 09:17

It’s just crap isn’t it. All this stuff accusing people who WFH as automatically being lazy chancers. And throw in public sector - whooo boy. Most of us don’t get a choice about whether we do or don’t WFH. Some of us like it some of us don’t. Most of us just get on with our work whether we WFH or out of the house. We just deal with the pros and cons of each.

All of this finger pointing and blaming really gets me down. It’s always aimed at the people lowest in the hierarchy. If managers can’t manage then point at them, that’s what they get the extra bucks for.

Girasole02 · 15/01/2025 09:36

Why does everything need a nonsensical name?

honeylulu · 15/01/2025 09:38

I'm amazed by all these jobs that seem to involve so little actual work! I have to log a minimum number of chargeable hours a day (lawyer) so no option to slack off. If WFH i will unload the dishwasher or do a quick tidy while the kettle is boiling but that's about it.

Coffee badging wouldn't work in our office either as there is a record of who has swiped in and out of the building and when. Plus a daily ticket for my commute is £72 (thanks Great Western) so if I've paid to come in to London I'm going to plonk my arse down and stay for the day!
