Hi I've a private health care policy, have had for years. Due again next month. I have to pay £352 extra this year which is a government tax.

Is this right? I thought personal policies were exempt.

What tax is it - IPT?

taxguru · 13/01/2025 14:37

If you're meaning P11d taxable benefit in kind, then no, private healthcare isn't exempt - it's a taxable benefit.

Private healthcare is a taxable benefit. DH's work offered a very high end/expensive policy, however, as a 40% taxpayer, the amount of tax he was paying on it was far more than he would be paying privately for a less extensive policy that suited our needs, so he ended up cancelling it.

Insurance Premium Tax is payable on healthcare, either 12% or a higher rate of 20% I think, from memory.

What is the tax for OP? Any idea? What % is the tax? All I can find is personal policies should be exempt. You're not paying it through a limited company for yourself are you? I'd ring the insurers and find out why they've applied it, it might be a mistake.

Oh is it just insurance premium tax OP?

melandlover · 13/01/2025 15:02

Yes, DH has private health care for 4 of us through work, from memoty he pays over £60 of tax on the insurance per month.

justasking111 · 13/01/2025 19:24

No it's never been company health care, only ever personal. As pp said govuk say it isn't taxable and I can't find anywhere that they say it is.

I'll phone them tomorrow and ask them to email me the government link where they say it is payable. It's £352 extra this year.
