Is this shingles?!

Thought i had a fungal infection under my right boob (diagnosed from pharmacy on Weds after having an itchy rash for a few days that was getting bigger). Cream prescribed has done nothing, rash just bigger, hotter and much itchier, I noticed yesterday that it actually seems to be crusting....could it be I've actually had shingles?! It feels very hot, and I get a burning sensation which is worse at night - very uncomfortable but not painful as such. Went back to pharmacy this morning, they thought likely shingles but not completely certain and if so, I was quite a way through it by now. Before I make a GP appointment tomorrow, does anyone else think this could have been shingles all along? Photos attached of rash on Monday vs rash today.

Looks more like contact dermatitis

Looks like shingles to me

That’s what my shingles looked and felt like. Pharmacist diagnosed it. GP didn’t see it but was fine with the pharmacist diagnosis. I was given pain medication.

Thats interesting, I was hoping the pharmacist would be more definite if it was or wasn't, I dont want to take up a GP appointment particularly but if its not shingles i need to know what it is so I can treate it. Did your rash look like this?

Is the burning like sunburn type pain?

It doesn't look like any shingles rash I've seen, so it's interesting other posters have had a similar rash.

I did wonder about this but the crusting over the last 24 hours plus the burning sensation particularly overnight seems odd...I have never had a reaction like this to anything previously

Doesn't look like shingles to me. Under boob area more likely to be fugal infection or contact dermatitis.

What cream has been used on it?

Looks like shingles to me. Do you have any other symptoms? I had raging headaches for a few days. I didn't take any medication it just disappeared of its own accord. The itching/pain (like tiny needles) stopped after a couple of weeks but the rash hung around for ages.

Shingles often appears on only one side of the body. Mine started near my belly button and carried on to the middle of my back but only on the left. My right side was completely clear.

Yes sunburn type pain is exactly how it would describe it!

My shingles were more raised and darker, there were actual holes in my skin. It felt like I was being stung by nettles.

biscuitsandbooks · 12/01/2025 15:24

It doesn't look like shingles, more like dermatitis or something.

Drivingoverlemons · 12/01/2025 15:24

Why wouldn’t you go to the GP with suspected shingles? It can get quite nasty. I’d want to know. It’s really strange to think you are taking up an appointment when you don’t know what it is and it’s not getting better.

I did have a headache last Friday and Saturday, went away after paracetamol though. Rash is only on my right side, started as a line of spots on bra line and has since spread downwards by a couple of inches

Looks like the sweaty boob rash I get. Whatever it is it doesn't look or sound like shingles to me. You would expect to see blisters if it was shingles, not just a bumpy rash.

ellenpartridge · 12/01/2025 15:26

Looks like possible relatively mild shingles to me. Burning sensation does sounds like shingles. A tell tale shingles sign is if it is concentrated on one side of the body and doesn't cross the midline. When did it start? To effectively medicate shingles it is best to get the medication ASAP. After (I think) about 3 days there are certain things they can no longer prescribe. Hope it clears up soon either way. I couldn't believe how painful Shingles was!

LuluBlakey1 · 12/01/2025 15:26

See GP- it is not a wasted appointment. It may need a different anti-fungal ir a hydrocortisone/other ant-inflammatory steroidal cream. If it is shingles a GP will diagnose it.

ellenpartridge · 12/01/2025 15:27

I see someone said underboob unlikely to be shingles but the rin cage is a very usual place to get it

I guess because if it is, I'm over a week into it now and the anti viral medication is meant to be given within first 3 days - the pharmacist said there wasn't any medication they could give me now. Think i'll contact my GP in the morning and send the photos over

This- I think it's called Intertrigo

dementedpixie · 12/01/2025 15:29

Could have been shingles but at the stage it's at they won't be able to do anything for it. If you'd been diagnosed earlier you may have got antivirals but it's a bit late for them if they're already crusting over

dementedpixie · 12/01/2025 15:31

When my ds had shingles it was on the left side of his chest under his arm and was misdiagnosed as eczema. It sounds like that's what it could be but not much a doctor could do for it now

floormops · 12/01/2025 15:33

Buy some zovirax cream and see if it helps.

Nothatgingerpirate · 12/01/2025 15:34

No, it's not shingles.
You would also feel sick and "under the weather".
It's some type of eczema.
