Greasy hair

Dd is 9 and has really greasy hair, even as soon as it's been washed it still looks greasy.
I use conditioner because I always have on my other 3 and myself so I'm wondering if that's the wrong thing to be doing but she's the only one with this hair type so I don't know how best to manage it.
Hopefully someone can give me some advice.
I've tried washing less frequently and more frequently but it doesn't seem to make any difference.
It's mainly the roots.

You don't put conditioner on the roots though do you? It's only supposed to be on the length, not right near the scalp.

Try different shampoos to find what works for her hair. Mine gets greasy easily and I find the orange or pink bottle L'Oréal best for it.

MyDeepZebra · 11/01/2025 19:40

Try an apple cider vinegar rinse.

menopausalmare · 11/01/2025 19:43

Some shampoos and conditioners contain too much silicone. My hairdresser suggested washing hair with washing up liquid now and then to reduce residue build- up.

CraftyNavySeal · 11/01/2025 19:44

If it’s greasy soon afterwards it could be that you aren’t washing all the shampoo out. Get a scalp brush and really scrub the roots, rinse very very well then blow dry and make sure the roots are bone dry. If the roots stay damp they get greasy again.

AppleBlossomMay · 11/01/2025 19:44

Try a silicone free shampoo as silicone can build up and make roots greasier. You can then add a silicone based conditioner to the lengths. Make sure you don't put conditioner on her scalp, only the length.

I find clear shampoo better than the creamy ones. Tee tree detox shampoo is good but best to use every 3rd wash not every time. I also find alternating 3/4 different shampoos helps mine for some reason. Definitely conditioner just on the ends & shampoo twice each time. I shampoo once then condition then shampoo again.

Swonderful · 11/01/2025 19:56

Good old baby shampoo is actually really good for greasy hair, with no conditioner.

My son finds most shampoos have to much added stuff that makes his hair go greasy quicker.

FortyFacedFuckers · 11/01/2025 20:04

Agree with all of the above but also shampoo rinse well and shampoo & rinse again before the conditioner & really rub/massage the head/roots when shampooing

SoNiceToComeHomeTo · 11/01/2025 20:17

I have fine straight hair which looks greasy if I condition it. It’s fine with just a small amount of shampoo and a cold rinse.

Switch to shampoo for DRY hair and only use conditioner on the roots. Avoid touching tge hair. Tge rest is hormones, I'm afraid.

bradfordisdamned · 11/01/2025 20:21

Vosene shampoo, no conditioner.

What?!

Chuchoter · 11/01/2025 20:23

Once a week give his hair a wash with Fairy washing up liquid as it breaks down grease. It's kind to the scalp as well.

Make sure it's massaged in and a rich lather is created. You don't need to use much but so make sure you take the time to throughly massage the scalp and roots and then rinse as usual.

Hair will be grease free and look shiny.

I don't think a nine year old can get greasy hair, can they? Doesn't that come about with puberty, like oily skin does? I'd suggest it's not grease, but product build-up from the conditioner or even shampoo, especially if it's not being rinsed out thoroughly. I wouldn't worry about special types of shampoo - just use a normal, simple one for children, and make sure it's washed thoroughly.

What is her hair type?

Juliagreeneyes · 11/01/2025 20:27

I have this type of hair - are you in a soft water area? Don’t use conditioner — most especially if your water is soft water. A normal shampoo is fine - nothing too harsh or acidic and nothing too fancy - but give the scalp a good wash and make sure to rinse it all out.

Oldenpeculiar · 11/01/2025 20:29

I have to wash my hair every day, it's fine and looks greasy by the end of the day, especially the roots.
I don't use conditioner at all and use a non conditioning shampoo (Alberto apple or raspberry, or a tea tree is my go to), and try to keep products to a minimum because anything just makes it look greasy.
Wash twice, and really scrub the roots and scalp,
As a pp suggested mine looks better and 'lasts' longer if at least the roots are blow dried, rather than it drying naturally.
Also wash brushes and combs regularly, I found that helped too.

LittleMyLittle · 11/01/2025 20:29

but she's the only one with this hair type

I'm assuming that by "hair type" you mean greasy? Does she have a standard hair type otherwise? i.e. it's not fine, fluffy or otherwise unusual.

I have fine fluffy hair and yes, it did begin to get greasy around the age of nine. But it didn't help that I used conditioner - it was too heavy for my hair. I ended up with horrendous product build-up and hair that looked greasy and lifeless but was actually clean.

Sorry, that should have read that you can add conditioner to the length if needed, as sometimes people have greasy roots but the length can be drier and rougher so needs some conditioner.

If her hair is quite greasy throughout however, then conditioner might not be needed at all or just used once in a while.

Givemecoffee77 · 11/01/2025 20:31

L’Oréal do a clay shampoo which I find good. It’s in a light green / blue bottle. They do a conditioner too that I just apply to ends.

LegoBingo · 11/01/2025 20:33

Don't use conditioner and see if that makes a difference. Then make sure you're using a shampoo like a tea tree one, something without added conditioning ingredients to it. Clarifying. That sort of thing.

RunVelma · 11/01/2025 20:33

My DD had very greasy hair as a child. It looked oily and it used to stink!

The shampoos that worked for us were neutrogena oily scalp or also L’Oréal elvive extraordinary clay. We also used Osmo scalp therapy shampoo every few washes. For conditioner we used Aussie conditioning spray.

Hippokitty · 11/01/2025 20:35

Also make sure you blow dry instead of letting it dry naturally, that can help rather a lot

Edited

This was recommended to me for my teen who started getting horrendously greasy hair a few years ago. Made a massive difference. The other one he uses is a TGel one. The blue one I think.

Also washing up liquid when it’s really bad.
He can now go 2 days without washing it.

Why am I only learning this now? 43 years later! 🙈
