Greasy hair

yellowdragon · 11/01/2025 19:30

Dd is 9 and has really greasy hair, even as soon as it's been washed it still looks greasy.
I use conditioner because I always have on my other 3 and myself so I'm wondering if that's the wrong thing to be doing but she's the only one with this hair type so I don't know how best to manage it.
Hopefully someone can give me some advice.
I've tried washing less frequently and more frequently but it doesn't seem to make any difference.
It's mainly the roots.

I don't think a nine year old can get greasy hair, can they? Doesn't that come about with puberty, like oily skin does? I'd suggest it's not grease, but product build-up from the conditioner or even shampoo, especially if it's not being rinsed out thoroughly. I wouldn't worry about special types of shampoo - just use a normal, simple one for children, and make sure it's washed thoroughly.

What is her hair type?

Of course 9 year olds can get greasy hair, 9 year olds could easily be starting puberty.

What products are you using currently @yellowdragon ?

SueSheeMee · 11/01/2025 20:52

My DD was the same at that age as puberty kicked in and it was a nightmare as I'd been battling really tangled hair and hair brushing refusal for years before then, meaning I'd been reliant on tons of conditioner.

I moved her to the same shampoo I've used forever and still do (but need to buy online now), Body Shop Ginger Shampoo which totally resolved the greasy issue and I used conditioner on the ends only.

She's now 15 with quite dry hair and uses whatever shampoo and conditioner her friends use or she's seen online.

She gets greasy if she doesn't wash after a couple of days, as do most of us, but the incessant pubescent grease issue of age 9-12 has gone. She used the Body Shop Ginger every hair wash for years until the last year or so.

purplecorkheart · 11/01/2025 21:00

I had greasy hair. I suggest double shampooing, massage the shampoo into the scalp both times. You need to be touching the scalp all the time not just the hair for a few minutes. Conditioner just on the mid-length and ends. Also make sure you wash combs and hairbrushes at least once a week.

Littletinytarzanswingingfromanosehair · 11/01/2025 21:27

I have very greasy hair, I often double shampoo like PP's have mentioned. I use OGX apple cider vinegar shampoo and then I would use L'Oréal kids tangle tamer, can't find it anywhere so now I've switched to Mane n Tail detangler
Condition on ends 1x a week.

Why wouldn’t a 9yo be able to get greasy hair? Puberty can have started by 9 too!

TenerifeElevenerife · 11/01/2025 21:34

My 8 year old is the same, I find the kids shampoos don’t seem to clean the scalp as well, when she uses my shampoo it stays clean for much longer.
And as others have said, blow drying the roots really helps.

Pumpkinseason3 · 11/01/2025 21:35

Yup, agree with the others @yellowdragon - make sure you’re double washing it. Make sure you’re rinsing it REALLY well. If using a conditioner start it from the mid-length point down. And blow dry the roots even if you aren’t drying the lengths 😊
Also, try and not get into a routine of washing it daily! I started that aged about 10 and have only just managed to finally break the cycle a few years ago aged 30 🫠

Mozzarellaballs · 11/01/2025 21:45

Some conditioners cause build up. I can't use Dove conditioner because no matter how much I rinsed it stuck to my roots all near my ears and yes stop using so much conditioner and only a tiny bit on the ends

RunVelma · 11/01/2025 23:39

Hippokitty · 11/01/2025 20:35

Also make sure you blow dry instead of letting it dry naturally, that can help rather a lot

Yes! Definitely makes a difference.

Also, a quick blast of dry shampoo at the roots.

Yes, this is really important. I've got fine hair and it looks dreadful if I don't blow dry it.

Also don't wash it too often. You're better off finding some way to tie it up instead and letting it go a bit greasy for a couple of days before washing. If you wash it every day and let it naturally dry, it'll be constantly lank.

A little conditioner on the ends is ok if they're dry.

My 9 year old has started having greasy hair- never happened before and not changed what we’ve been using

Some children are in puberty at 9. My DD had greasy hair at 9.

A cheap clear shampoo scrubbed in at the scalp helped. Conditioner only applied to the ends.

Dry shampoo between washes was a massive help.

Paisleyandpolkadots · 12/01/2025 00:10

I think it is very likely puberty. I have fine hair which had a tendency to awful oiliness when young. I can categorically tell you that baby shampoo will not get oil off greasy hair. It is designed to be very gentle for non oily baby hair! Try a clear clarifying shampoo or a shampoo specifically designed for oily hair and shampoo twice if necessary -not some creamy "gene"concoction. If you can comb it without conditioner skip it entirely. If not put a tiny amount on the ends. Don't brush it if you can avoid it - it just wakes up oil glands and spreads it through the hair. I found a teaspoon of vinegar and a jug of warm water when washing my hair cut build up. Also a cold water rinse at the end of the rinsing and washing.

ThinWomansBrain · 12/01/2025 00:21

whatever you do use, don;t use too much shampoo - you only need a small amount

Mumof1andacat · 12/01/2025 00:22

Double shampooing and always blow drying air. Leaving it to air dry will make it more greasy

honeylulu · 12/01/2025 00:47

Are you using a sulphate free shampoo? People say they are "better" but they definitely don't agree with my hair, leaving it feeling heavy, sticky and greasy however well I rinse it. My hair does much better with a cheap shampoo that gets a proper lather going.

Why am I only learning this now? 43 years later! 🙈

Only hair below the ears!

yellowdragon · 12/01/2025 03:27

Thank you for all the advice, I have only ever used conditioner on the ends, I use V05 but we've tried others.
Yes I suspect puberty is behind it too.
Her hair is straight and quite thick and lush but the roots look wet even after thoroughly drying it and where it's blonde the roots appear dark when greasy.
I will try washing it with fairy as suggested a few times and see if that helps.

My daughter has issues with greasy roots and dandruff. I use Alberto apple or raspberry shampoo, then spray leave in conditioner on the ends (she has long hair). I avoid blow drying as this seems to make her scalp more itchy. I also tend to french plait her hair during the day (harder to detect greasy roots). You could try a mild dry shampoo for in-between days? X

maldivemoment · 12/01/2025 03:57

I think someone already mentioned it, but The Body Shop Ginger shampoo. We tried everything prior to this & found this to be the best.

Yes dd also has dandruff.
A couple of people suggested Alberto so I might give that a try.

L’Oréal do a clay shampoo which I find good. It’s in a light green / blue bottle. They do a conditioner too that I just apply to ends.

Edited

@Givemecoffee77 Are you easily finding the Extraordinary Clay shampoo and conditioner? I’ve been using both for years with great results but suddenly it’s really difficult to find in the shops.

FTHC · 12/01/2025 19:25

Someone else has recommended it but Vosene works really well, especially if she has dandruff.

I've just switched back to it after trying several different brands.

Member984815 · 12/01/2025 19:30

Are you sure it's dandruff and not another scalp condition? I have psoriasis and if it's flaring up and I'm scratching it my hair gets greasy quickly. I use semi di lino dandruff shampoo and it has my psoriasis under control and my hair doesn't get greasy as quick . The condition of her scalp is probably the root of the problem

ColonelRhubarbBikini · 12/01/2025 19:35

I’ve always had an oily scalp since puberty and I just suck it up and wash my hair daily. I echo PP that say always blow dry never air dry.

I wouldn’t personally use fairy on hair. Aveeno do a very good apple cider vinegar clarifying shampoo that would be much kinder.

The other big difference that I’ve made is to be scrupulous with brush and comb hygiene. Make sure they’re washed regularly otherwise you’re just adding old oil back into the hair after it’s washed.
