Is my passport valid?

passportquestion25 · 11/01/2025 19:29

I am going on holiday in the summer to Portugal, flying from England. My passport was issued in 2019 and is therefore the old style burgundy coloured one, when Britain was part of the EU. It's still in date until 2029, but my partner has said it's probably worth me checking as he's not sure if they're still valid. I've googled and I'm more confused tbh! Can anyone help? Thank you

Yes it is still valid

Bigsislookingforadvice · 11/01/2025 19:31

It's valid for 10 years from date of issue - the confusion has been the GB passports used to have extra added to end date of renewed early - post Brexit passports are only valid for 10 years from issue date

2029? You’ve fine until 6 months before the end date.

passportquestion25 · 11/01/2025 19:39

Thanks all. I know it's valid til 2029 but my partner was worrying that the expiry date wouldn't be valid anymore due to the EU issue. But that doesn't seem to be the case.

Mine runs out next year. I last used it in October.

TickingAlongNicely · 11/01/2025 19:45

No one cares about the cover. It was still issued by the UK government.
Same as a German passport is issued by the German government, or a Vatican passport by the Vatican etc.

Calua · 11/01/2025 19:48

Good to know it's valid as I have the burgundy one too and don't want the post Brexit one for as long as I can hold off. I've still got a few years left on it so I'm happy!

LittleGreenDuck · 11/01/2025 19:50

Yes, still valid. Mine also expires in 2029, I used it last week.

Where do these ideas come from?

Your partner is totally wrong 🤦🏻‍♀️

It's valid 10 years from date of issue now so the expiry date is probably no longer valid, he's correct in that.

Yes it would seem so! It's a bit of a theme tbh 😂

You can use a burgundy passport until it expires

For travel in the EU it is valid if its under 10 years old on the date you enter the EU (count 10 years from issue date). It also needs to have 3 months remaining when leaving the EU (look at expiry date)

No. It's valid until 6 months before 10 years after the issue date to enter Europe. The confusion is they no longer recognise any time added on if your last renewal was early. So ignore the expiry date - the important one is the issue date +10 years and having 6 months before that, Mine is 2027 and burgundy and fine for a while yet too.

Brexit did, of course, cause some changes to the way we travel, but your passport would only be invalid if the expiry date is more than 10 years later than the issue date (i.e. you've had extra time added because you applied for a replacement early) on the day you leave the UK. Given that your passport doesn't expire until 2029 and HM Passport Office stopped adding the remaining months to passports from 10 September 2018, it seems unlikely you had remaining months from your previous passport added to your current one. It would also be invalid if you have fewer than 3 months left on it on the day you return home from Portugal, but given that you say the expiry date is in 2029 and we've only just started 2025, it can't possibly be invalid on that basis either.
You can tell your DP not to worry. 😊

dementedpixie · 11/01/2025 20:31

@chemteacher you are wrong. It's 3 months remaining for the EU and you can look at the printed expiry when working out when you would need to leave the EU.

The only time you count 10 years from the issue date is for entry into the EU.

Does your partner seriously think everyone with a, completely valid, red passport had to suddenly apply for a new blue one as soon as we left the EU? Don't you think that would have been heavily reported in the media in the last few years?
