What do you think was the worst decade if you had to choose ...
It's hard I'll go 90s bit mainly early 90s

Can't believe anyone's saying the 80s.
I love 80s music. But then I was born in 86 so didn't grow up with it.

Watching TOTP2 has reminded me that in every decade, a lot of the songs in the charts were awful and it’s no surprise they’ve been (mostly) forgotten.

That said, there was plenty of amazing music in the 80’s and 90’s, whereas when I listen to the radio now, I feel that contemporary music is mostly dire. Sometimes, I hear the intro to a great vintage song and my ears prick up, but it turns out to be a sample used on an otherwise terrible track. I recently heard the beginning of a song by Donna Summer and thought, “great!” then Tinie Tempeh began shouting over it 😠

Everything is always a bit of a mash up now isn't it; they rarely write new songs anymore. It is all borrowed parts, whether that be words or music, and remixed. Rarely is a covered version better than the original either! Why bother?!

How are people saying the 90's? Were you alive then? 90's gave us of loads of amazing music from different genres- britpop/indie, trance, house club classics, grunge, synth pop, and garage & nu metal towards the end. Basically all the stuff that's getting sampled in today's music. It was the best of times.

I agree. 90s were fabulous

Oh I hated 90s music! I was having a great time in the 80’s and happily dipping back into the 70’s and the 90’s music scene depressed the shit out of me!

I was born in 73 and the 80’s were amazing!

Video killed the radio star.

It's too much about the visuals now, not enough about the actual audio experience.

JohnTheRevelator · 11/01/2025 17:38

2000 - 2010. I love 70s and 80s music, and the 90s is not too bad. I think my issue is that I haven't heard of the majority of the artists or songs from the noughties.

Youngheartsalittletogetherness · 11/01/2025 17:42

Mainstream stuff on the whole passed me by as Northern soul has been my interest for 40+years.
I couldn't get enough of the travelling, the niters, dancing, gear when I was younger.

ThisUsernameIsNowTaken · 11/01/2025 17:44

Later 90ies definitely, very bland and boring. 80ies and 00ies were the best. But I guess it's subjective and depends on when you were 'young'.

With respect, I'm sure you do, because we have it blasted at us in very chemist, supermarket, and restaurant we go into!

localnotail · 11/01/2025 17:47

Today's music is dire. Bland and boring elevator background drivel, to be played in Primark at a low level.

Vitriolinsanity · 11/01/2025 17:50

Early 00's

Late 80's

Love TOTP2 and enjoyed the 1975s last night but some of it was truly dire

outerspacepotato · 11/01/2025 17:54

Anything after auto tune became prevalent. It affects the vocals so much, I can't stand it.

SleeplikeababyTonight · 11/01/2025 18:11

No, I love the 90s!! Leave my childhood tunes alone! This thread has inspired me to listen to Eagle-Eye Cherry, Save Tonight🎵

I mean, music videos have completely died a death, noone is watching them and hardly any artists even produce them anymore, so this isn't true at all.

There's no one particular decade that is absolutely the worst but the run from about 2003-2007 was pretty bad for my taste. I have fond memories of the early 2010s as it's more 'my' era but a lot of the songs have aged REALLY badly. I don't like much from the 80s but it seems it brings everyone else joy so...

SellFridges · 11/01/2025 18:23

I don’t have any real favourites from the 70’s, and no bands or artists that I really picked up on from the 2010’s. I adore 90’s music though. Best decade by far.

Mochudubh · 11/01/2025 18:40

Probably an unpopular opinion but I think a lot of the 50s and 60s was shite. I think Elvis sounds like a bull bellowing in a field, can't stand the Beatles JL in particular. All that cheeky chappie type pop like Herman's Hermits and Dave, Dee, Dozy, Grumpy, Fuckwit & Twitch etc makes me want to chew my own ears off.

Have to admit that I do like the "darker" types of 60s music like The Animals, Kinks, Stones etc though.

WhatATimeToBeAlive · 11/01/2025 18:43

This one and the last one. Absolute shite generally. Very little that will be remembered or played in 40 years or so.

Edited

Fuckwit and twitch 😂Theres shite record's in every genre/decade.
Record's.. showing my age there.😁

EsmaCannonball · 11/01/2025 19:07

Whenever it was musical acts started doing that thing where they announce all their names at the beginning of a song because the music is so lacking in creativity and identity nobody would have a clue who they were if they didn't tell you. Pitbull is usually involved. And Jason Derulo.

Vitriolinsanity · 11/01/2025 19:08

@Youngheartsalittletogetherness precisely. The musical travesty that is Shaddap a your Face not only kept Vienna off the Number 1 spot in 1980, but also lives forever on my vinyl of Now!

2025mustbebetter · 11/01/2025 19:10

2010s there are actually some bangers but there was too much awful dross flooding the radio stations.

2020s are better as it's so easy to access so much different music. Love an indie on instagram.

I am old though so maybe it's just that!

90s is my vibe. Early 2000s not too bad.

BlueGlassVase · 11/01/2025 19:21

Really went wrong for me from about 2007 so I’d say 2010s the worst. Not enough current, mainstream guitar rock for my liking and too much Guetta/Calvin Harris stuff which isn’t to my taste.

misscockerspaniel · 11/01/2025 19:25

Elton John's "Diamonds" currently tops the Official Albums Chart 100. Fleetwood Mac is at no 10 (and 18), Wham at no 12, and Abba, at 17. 😀
