Reform UK neck and neck with Labour?

1000 replies

NeatDog · 10/01/2025 11:09

Absolutely shocked to read that in a poll Reform UK are neck and neck with Labour...

About 25% polling share for Reform and Labour.

I thought Blair was the worst PM ever, but Starmer seems to be giving him a run for his money.

I am not disagreeing that we could use that money well in the NHS. However, the annual NHS spend on salaries is around £71,100,000,000. Increasing this spend by 0.98% alone will be helpful but will not save it - and will be quickly cancelled out by the looming problem of our aging population.

That's why Farage himself is proposing a co-pay system to bridge the gap.

If we also chose to limit low-skilled migration that 0.98% will be wiped out completely as wages for care workers, NHS cleaners etc will increase. Only a relatively small proportion of NHS salary spend is for highly-skilled jobs like doctors. Of course this will be a great thing for British people working low-skilled jobs in the NHS, but we will need to find a way to meet the additional costs.

Low skill immigration isn't beneficial to the UK...

I see a lot of third world immigrants in my local area (they don't speak English). I assume they are working at the local hospital. They bring their partners and kids over.

So the taxpayer has to provide housing benefit and schooling for them. They also need health care etc.

All this doesn't take away from the fact that many immigrants don't work....

I don't think non Brits should be getting benefits...

Tbh, I agree with you. Big Business loves mass immigration because it reduces wages.

What I don't understand is, Labour was traditionally on the side of the Working Classes, why are they cheering on mass immigration which reduces wages for the Working person?

Labour are no longer on the side of the Working classes.

Because a lot of them don't want to work!

Ever heard of "airplanes"?

@PandoraSox ah sorry, yes, you're right. It IS Evington. I haven't been there (or in Leiscester) since 2011, so made a mistake.

It's a well located area, not far from the Uni and the city centre. I briefly lived there in 2011, so a while ago, it might have improved since then, maybe.

There were also tensions between Muslim and Sikh inhabitants in the area whilst I was in Leicester, once there was a riot/skirmish. As far as I remember, a Muslim guy attacked a Sikh girl, and a bunch of Sikh men went on to clear the matters. But don't quote me on that (the reason for the riot), it was spoken about at the time, but I didn't fact check whether the given reason was true.

There are many reasons, fleeing war and oppression is just one. Many of them are gay, and just want to live their lives without fear of imprisonment or death. Others are religious apostates, many Christian looking for sanctuary in a country with freedom of religion. Some are even political pariahs, opposing tyrannical regimes and being marked for sanction by the state. As you can imagine, nobody in these scenarios wants to be sent back to their country of origin.

But we need to have a robust immigration system to protect these people too. They are fleeing terrorists and oppressors in their own country. If we let the types of people they are fleeing here, that doesn't protect them at all. The family who's daughter drowned in the channel a few months ago were fleeing their own family, because they had married outside their own religious sect. They were being chased round Europe by people from their own family trying to kill them, who presumably had got into Europe through the same routes. Imagine fleeing from oppression in Iran and turning up here to a mosque to hear the same stuff being preached by the very people who oppressed you in the first place? None of those people are the ones burning their documents. The ones burning their documents are the ones pretending to be children or the ones pretending to be from one country when they are not.

Thanks for confirming.

There are tensions between the two communities, that is true from what I have read about the area. There was trouble in 2022.

It seems to have a high crime rate and be rundown in parts, but I have found no references to it being a "no go" area for white people. It may be a slightly dodgy area that some people might prefer to avoid if possible. But there are many areas like that in the UK. I expect many of us have lived in a few, I have!

Absolutely - I think with airplane and UK passport rather than British passport comments, I think we may have an American activist spamming here. How very 2025, if so. Musk, is that you?

Where is your local area @NeatDog ?

Farmers like migrant workers cause they can pay them lower and they will accept, I'm sure if the farmers wanted to uk workers they could have handled the HR too, It would have took time I just think then they would have to treat them better and pay them more which would have cost more money so it was worth not doing that and just claiming that it was brexit , what I find interesting in any talk of foreign workers, businesses like cheap worker to maximise profits, so political parties need to them vs us to keep their supporters but there a battle as businesses ultimately want to keep the foreign people coming over in low and high paying jobs they will be lower than our low and lower than our high so win win for them!. Its all about money and greed and a bit of racism thrown in there for good measures

What is this "disinformation" people speak of?

That Keir Starmer is complicit in rape gangs and is 'evil', that Jess Phillips doesn't care about rape victims.

Keir Starmer started to make great strides in prosecuting and changing the way in which sexual crimes were prosecuted whilst at the CPS (as too few were), Jess Phillips has campaigned her entire life for victims of abuse and it's outrageous that she is being dragged through this. All Jess said was that the government was going to implement the inquires findings rather than start another one. The smear campaign is honestly vile

Guinessandafire · 11/01/2025 11:39

It's no surprise to me that the Far Right are gaining traction in this country.

The Elon Musk threads have show that people are quite stupid and are easily led by these Far Right populist agitators.

I think Mumsnet has been infected by far right posters such as the thread starter, whipping up hate and convincing the huge fuming Tory membership on here that far right parties like Reform Ltd are better than current Labour , despite them having no policies that are workable, and that they are clearly a bunch of bigoted racists.

I don't hold out much hope for this country politically; too many stupid, mean spirited, bigoted people have the vote.

Absolutely to all of this and more, all re-iterated as fact in the majority of MSM too.

The deep-rooted misogyny of referring to Phillip’s as a ‘witch’ and the arrogant assumption that these wealthy men are better informed than a woman who has been working with victims for decades.

The lie that these horrendous crimes hadn’t had media coverage before Musk’s tweets, which is clearly, factually wrong.

That the vote this week was against another inquiry when it was actually a vote for a much-needed bill for child welfare and reform.

That Tommy Robinson has been falsely accused and wrongly imprisoned, when court records and hard evidence tell us the opposite.

That Starmer is cancelling local elections as a cover-up, when it’s just a delay due to boundaries of constituencies changing.

The lies and disinformation goes on and on and on…

Not surprised. They're still covering up in Yorkshire. Which I can accept during an investigation and arrests. But they just don't admit these gangs are like whack a mole moving around at will grabbing new victims all the time.

justasking111 · 11/01/2025 12:21

In a little village near us with a big hotel they housed asylum seekers for four months. This tiny rural village had two sexual assaults and a knife attack.

So? Does that make rape of children by asylum seekers acceptable?

The article also says the investigation was kept secret by the police.

I think Labour/ Tories and the BBC have hidden this abuse for decades.
