Why do so many people criticise vegans?

I'm a meat eater!

However, I don't understand why people criticise vegans so much.

They aren't hurting me and are trying to save animals and the environment.

What's wrong with that?

Surely people should be more critical of me because animals are killed for me to eat?

Some of these comments are "fascinating".

A lot of people have given odd reasons ...

Why would people be so critical of vegans because they are not getting enough vitamins etc and look unwell?

We don't so blatantly criticise people who are overweight and eating unhealthy foods!

That's just an excuse for the criticisms!

No I really don't feel inferior. I don't know why I would. If I did I'd become vegan

tobee · 10/01/2025 19:22

Err I think plenty of people do criticise overweight people. Especially women. Endlessly. Blatantly. And then people on weight loss injections get criticised too 🤷🏻‍♀️

Are you new to MN? Both are rife on here!

CosyDenimShark · 10/01/2025 19:24

I'm veggie, I know 2 vegans very well and none of us "bang on about it". I do however have to put up with digs and derogatory comments from my wider family who all eat meat when at social events. I can only assume I make them feel guilty. I can't fathom why they sneer about someone who doesn't like animal cruelty. Honestly, why would you hate on someone because of that?

I eat meat and fish because it provides for a better all round healthier diet. Vegans mostly look half dead and twice their age. I can guarantee my body age is below yours

Eat what you like but this is a ridiculously stupid assertion.

Didnt they literally just do a study recently on the BBC (or itv, or one of those main channels) that found vegan diet slowed aging of cells in its participants. So technically if anything, you'd be wrong there.

Sevenwondersofthewoo · 10/01/2025 19:26

I don’t feel guilty for eating meat why would I seriously why would I

I think people feel guilty about their choice to eat meat and feel inferior. I'm a meat eater but I admire those who don't eat meat. I've never met a veggie/vegan try enforce views on anyone or brag, it's just come up naturally in conversation. I'm sure I've been in contact with other veggies and vegans without even knowing.

Well, that's just a load of nonsense.

I don't feel guilty or inferior? Why would I when I'm very happy with my dietary choices? 🤷‍♀️

Maybe you feel guilty and inferior. Many of us don't!

Meat eating will one day go the way of smoking, a small minority will cling on to it, i say that as a meat eater

There already has been a big change. People in Britain used to eat offal, brains and bone marrow. Now they don't. Today people think that meat is muscle tissue covered with clingfilm but it wasn't always like that.

I recently moved to Newcastle and one thing I noticed is that more people smoke cigarettes here than in Liverpool where I used to be. Another thing is that in Grainger Market they sell pigs' heads. What do you think the average British meat eater is going to do with one of those?

Have you read all of the article? The findings were tenuous at best!

Well to be fair, it's about nutrition, it's not 'Murder on the Orient Express'.

No more tenuous than some of the BS on here.

It's meant to be scientific research, not a work of fiction!

The so-called BS on here doesn't purport to be scientific research!

So in what way is that better?

herpastcanchangethefuture · 10/01/2025 19:37

Anyway now leaving.

Sevenwondersofthewoo · 10/01/2025 19:43

21 pair of twins isn’t a study. It’s too small for a start.

tobee · 10/01/2025 19:44

I don't want to be awkward @SuePine69 but I eat offal, bone marrow and brain if I can get it. Sadly it's harder to find.

Cursory look on google shows Tesco and Morrisons sell lamb and pigs heart. They're good and cheap. Liver also available.

I love Andouillettes when I can. Pork stomach based sausage.

herpastcanchangethefuture · 10/01/2025 18:19

So all the vegans in California look old and unhealthy? Right.

For what it's worth I have been vegan for half my life, in my late 40s and IMHO I look good and feel great, hardly ill and blood pressure and cholesterol in great shape.

I suspect your bone health isn’t great though.

HereForTheAnimals · 10/01/2025 19:46

I wonder if I could ask a question to those who eat meat and are happy with their decision?

Could you kill it?

I'm not being goady, and I'm absolutely certain that many people do and would kill an animal to eat, but I am curious because I think many of the omnivores in my family and friendships couldn't.

I don't mean in an end of the world, and if you don't you starve kind of way either. I mean if you were presented with any animal, and in order to eat it you had to kill it, whilst other options are present, could you do it?

tobee · 10/01/2025 19:52

Interesting @HereForTheAnimals . I think I could if there was no choice but difficult on the skill front.

There was a documentary some years ago set in an abattoir that showed extremely clearly the killing of many different types of animals for meat. As an avowed meat eater I challenged myself to watch. I watched the whole programme and it was very informative. But it didn't change my mind about eating meat. Granted it was only telly and there is no smellyvision yet

Sevenwondersofthewoo · 10/01/2025 19:53

To answer this yes

i know where my meat comes from, how it’s killed and dressed up all pretty for me at the butchers but then I’m farming country.

NoWordForFluffy · 10/01/2025 19:53

Will I be given training, the right tools / equipment and PPE? Or do you mean I have to find my own weapon of choice and just hack at it until it (hopefully) dies? There's a world of difference between the two scenarios!
