Inappropriate insults about height.

Is it only me or would others find this to be rude? I work in a supermarket and a colleague has made frequent jokes about my height whilst I am stacking shelves. Today he called me a short arse. I am 5 foot 4 inches so not short and I am actually the average height of a UK woman. I find it ridiculous that in today's society were being kind is encouraged that individuals think it is ok to poke fun at people's/my height or point out anyone's features.

Go to your boss or HR. They need to have a word to him.

I wouldn't even blink an eye at this. You know it's not short. Why are people offended by such small things.

Biiiii · 09/01/2025 07:27

Since you've told him to stop and he hasn't, report him to your boss.

I am completely with you on this OP. I don't think it should be minimised as a bit of banter or that maybe he fancies you, as other posters have suggested. It doesn't make it ok. You have asked him to stop and it is clearly making you uncomfortable, yet he is persisting. I have worked with arseholes (men) like this who think it's HILARIOUS to comment about aspects of my appearance, some true, others not so much. It's a tricky one to deal with. Given that you have been told you are overreacting and even called a 'fucking snowflake' by one particularly pleasant poster, I can see why you would hesitate to report him because it seems that not everyone thinks your discomfort is a big deal, so you start to doubt yourself. Just because others have said that it wouldn't bother them, doesn't make it okay. So I would honestly be having a word with whoever deals with this kind of stuff.

I have it the other way, OP. I’m 5ft 11 and a guy at work often comments about my height and how tall I am, even though I’m the same height as him. It’s said as banter, but sometimes it really annoys me as it’s not like I can shrink and it makes me feel really self conscious.

Let’s campaign to make height a protected characteristic.

We could have:
Heightism - the act of discrimination based on height or perceived height difference?
