To have never used WhatsApp/Uber/Amazon?

I’m so ‘1982’ I may as well buy myself a Soda Stream and Teasmade Grin

Sodastreams are back with a vengeance (people trying to avoid the plastic waste of buying fizzy water). That aside, I dont imagine the Uber thing is that rare as it only really operates in major cities. Amazon and WhatsApp pretty unusual but I know people who boycott Amazon on principle and mainly use FB messenger/ iMessage. I'm not sure I could function effectively entirely without WhatsApp though.

I've never used WhatsApp. People keep trying to force me into it, but I refuse because it's owned by Meta, and I disagree so strongly with the way that Meta operates.

I'm actively avoiding Amazon now - to be fair it used to be the cheapest option but I can now find normally whatever I'm looking for cheaper elsewhere anyway. When did it get so expensive?!

Uber is a necessity, though I've given up using for local, short trips - I travel a lot for work in the US so it's nice to have an app that works anywhere (well, in the cities I visit anyway!) I also use it to get to the airports after getting burned by a local company who agreed to send a taxi at 3am and then 'forgot'.

WhatsApp again is a must for 'mum' chats - I'm in at least a dozen relating to school/PTA/extra curriculars.

It didn't used to be though so did you have it and then delete it?

I have to say, certainly post Covid, I've found Uber pretty useless. I never used it much before but generally you got one within a few minutes pre 2020. These days it's totally unreliable for any of the times you might actually need it. No good if you're in central London late at night and want a ride home to the suburbs - no driver will accept your ride because they don't want to go out of central London/somewhere that's not a big transport hub.

In the daytime if you want to go from some place in outer London to another, no drivers pick up, because they just want to go into central London.

And the worst thing is that it's now totally killed other minicab services - I rang one service when it looked like we might suddenly need a lift and they said they needed to be booked 2+ hours in advance! So you're screwed in outer London if you need a driver for anything at short notice.

@FrannyScraps No, I've never had it. I don't think it was such a big thing a few years ago?? I've only been under pressure to get it for about three years or so.

RaraRachael · 08/01/2025 18:26

Never used Uber as none anywhere near me. Never needed a Satnav. Have Alexa built into TV but never used it.

I am such a dinosaur but don't need these things in my life.

ClayDell · 08/01/2025 18:32

Thanks for all your responses ! Honestly didn’t know Soda Stream was becoming a thing again !

I’ve also never had an Alexa, used Just Eat or Deliveroo

Oh really? Are you also a bit older? (Sorry!) It's been around for years and years.

Kitchenspade · 08/01/2025 18:34

I don't use just eat or deliveroo because the restaurants have to charge more due to the fees they are charged. Always order directly from the restaurant.

I had a soda stream last year. It was a bit meh...

Thesquaregiraffe · 08/01/2025 18:42

This Christmas we’ve regressed to 1970’s as my DS asked for a record player for Christmas. I’m taking him to a record fair this weekend too! (He’s 13).

I also asked for a SodaStream for my 50th birthday last year. To which my DM said “I think we’ve still got one from the 80’s in the cupboard if you’d like it” - I declined gracefully, but they bought me a new one and we absolutely love it! 😁

I’ve never used Uber. I do use WhatsApp all the time and I still really wish that Deliveroo was a thing here in 2019 when I broke my ankle as it’s great!
