Am I being prudish, or do I have a point?

NC for this.

I've just sent the following email to a company I ordered underwear from:

I've just received my order confirmation and was quite shocked by the accompanying image. I don't want to screenshot it to resend, so hopefully you can work out the image I mean: it is of two women/girls lying on their fronts outside wearing black pants.

The woman (I hope) or girl on the left is very thin, which immediately made me assume she was a teenager. One of her breasts is clearly visible.

I'm not prudish about breasts at all, but it made me extremely uncomfortable to receive an image of what appears to be an almost-naked teenage girl. Given you also sell bras, it seems totally unnecessary for her to be completely topless.

I recommend you review the images you send out to your customers, as this has put me off using your company again.

As I say, I don't have an issue with breasts- I've breastfed in public many a time. It was mainly the fact that, based on her body shape, the woman/girl in the photo looks very young (post-pubescent, but pre-adult) and the exposed breast was completely unnecessary.

So what do you think: did I overreact?

I doubt I'll be going to jail for this so here's the picture.

It's perfectly normal and no nipple in sight.

Being thin doesn't mean you look like a teenager. Women are so hard on other women's bodies.

Am I being prudish, or do I have a point?

This is the weirdest thing I've ever done, but here you go!

She's on her front but propped up, so it's an angled side view, but you can see nipple.

Every day I wish to leave this accursed website, but then I see stuff like this and think “All right, you’ve earned one more day”.

This is of absolutely no assistance to me in evaluating the gratuitous or otherwise nature of the image you complained about, but I'm willing to bet it'll make my top 10 Things Seen On Mumsnet for 2025. 10/10, OP!

In my defence, they'd cropped her hand out of the picture along with her face!

If her arms were (partially) cropped out with her face, then you would have fewer clues to realise it was her elbow.

Just trying to make you feel better 😁

Without seeing the image I think it's impossible to say if you're being a prude or not.

I think you're being a bit weird to assume a model is a teenager because she's thin though. You say the company is Stripe & Stare. They use models of all sizes and ages and they sell underwear so models in underwear is what I would expect from their marketing. Are they are only supposed to use models with body types you approve of? Some adult women are thin. Some teenagers aren't.

Obviously you're totally entitled to complain if you feel it was inappropriate though - and you obviously do. So I'm not sure why you're looking for other people's validation.

I agree. I’m petite, thin with nearly nonexistent breasts. Reading things like the OP is disheartening to be honest, to be compared to a teenage girl.

I know the company and they use all sizes and shapes of models, in this case the editorial image was of someone of a thin body shape. So what.

in this post

You're free to think that, but I disagree- if, god forbid, I was ever accused of anything by a pupil, my phone would be searched by police. They are able to access deleted images.

Ah yes, thank you. That was when she thought it was an image of a teenager so I do get it. Now we know it is an adult’s elbow the drawing is even more hilarious.

Oh my god, I'm in absolute hysterics! I've just zoomed right in and you are absolutely right, it's her elbow! 😂What an absolute tit, excuse the pun!

To make it worse, I'm a lesbian- you think I'd be able to tell the difference between an elbow and a breast!

I'm so sorry for wasting everyone's time- I now need to send a grovelling apology to the company regarding me email! Any suggestions for how to phrase it?!

This is quite possibly the stupidest thing I have ever done in my life.

If it's any consolation, OP, I LOVE you. For everything you have posted on this thread.

Yes I totally agree you get the occasional quirky adult who loves bright colours and textures. Totally fine with that and I'm sure a small subset of their customers are just women who like fun patterns. I'm one myself so I don't judge anyone who are buying it for themselves. However even I find their designs a bit too extreme and also extremely overpriced for what they are. Those knickers look like the £2 pile from Primark and are being sold for £25 per piece?!

Despite all adults who like quirky styles, one can assume the majority of middle-aged women don't choose rainbow coloured pastel polka dot underwear by default. They seem to be mixing the more dubious pre-teen designs with more normal ones so feels more harmless.

may I ask..

what are we, middle-aged women, supposed to choose?

I wonder if I should start questioning my underwear choices, have I been so wrong all these years?

If my "too colourful" pants are "too quirky"
Where do we stand on black lace pants? Too slutly?

nodramaplz · 08/01/2025 11:07

I really don't think I am 'abusing' women for being too thin. Just saying that, without the context of a face, a thin woman's body could easily be mistaken for that of a teenager.

Depends on the mind of the person reading it!!!

JennieTheZebra · 08/01/2025 11:08

@User776532 they’re not aimed at middle aged women, they’re aimed at 20 something young women with few responsibilities and full time jobs. I work with a fair few of them, still live at home on a full time nursing salary (30k plus) and so have a thousand pounds a month to spend on themselves while saving for a house deposit. That’s why the taste is a little “young” in places. Nothing to do with kinks or anything creepy, just young women with money to burn.

Beige granny panties.

Nothing sexy, especially if you're thin.

I absolutely agree that we shouldn't be judging women for their body shape, but I'm not judging her, I'm judging the company for sharing a photo of her wearing only pants without including her face.

You’re judging a picture of a slim woman and immediately assuming it’s a teenage girl, so much so that you emailed them. I think this is offensive, personally.

CrispyCrumpets · 08/01/2025 11:09

Hang on, if that's an elbow, where is her boob? 😄

CaptainMyCaptain · 08/01/2025 11:09

I haven't read the whole thread or seen the picture which I gather wasn't what the OP thought it was anyway. I've looked at the website though and liked the knickers but they are very expensive.

SensibleSigma · 08/01/2025 11:11

Bless you, OP! Having a mind tuned into safeguarding is a curse at times. I can’t relax in a public place where DC aren’t being properly supervised as I’m on the edge of my seat to catch toddlers heading for the river etc.

And the need for obsessive protectiveness with your phone. I get it.

She’s extremely slender so it doesn’t show. 😆

Should have gone to specsavers🤣

Do you equate being heavier with being older?

Does a teenager look 40 of she's overweight?

I'm trying to wrap my head around this.

I was going to vote YABU due to "thin" being conflated with underage. However I had a look at their website and I find it very disturbing that they're selling knickers with incredibly childish prints and colours for grown women. Pink with stars, pastel leopard print, hot pink with rainbow spots. WTF. That same style of underwear is literally only sold in toddler, girls and teenage sections in mainstream stores.

It definitely smacks of encouraging grown women to cosplay as underage girls for men of extremely dubious taste. Without going into too much detail, there are multiple porn categories where actresses wear children's knickers with cute patterns and designs to make them appear like teens (or worse). That brand seems to be playing heavily into the market under the guise of being comfortable or sustainable. No other lingerie company offers adult size knickers with those sort of kiddy designs on them.

yes, shocking ... nearly as bad as these pink knickers with hand-drawn darker pink hearts and pastel-pink leopard print ones sold by that notorious purveyor of smut, Marks & Spencer's ....

Yes probably you are right. Either that or they already had the foresight to expect a complaint and edited out!

I would not send a grovelling apology. You have done some good advertising for them.
