Am I being prudish, or do I have a point?

NC for this.

I've just sent the following email to a company I ordered underwear from:

I've just received my order confirmation and was quite shocked by the accompanying image. I don't want to screenshot it to resend, so hopefully you can work out the image I mean: it is of two women/girls lying on their fronts outside wearing black pants.

The woman (I hope) or girl on the left is very thin, which immediately made me assume she was a teenager. One of her breasts is clearly visible.

I'm not prudish about breasts at all, but it made me extremely uncomfortable to receive an image of what appears to be an almost-naked teenage girl. Given you also sell bras, it seems totally unnecessary for her to be completely topless.

I recommend you review the images you send out to your customers, as this has put me off using your company again.

As I say, I don't have an issue with breasts- I've breastfed in public many a time. It was mainly the fact that, based on her body shape, the woman/girl in the photo looks very young (post-pubescent, but pre-adult) and the exposed breast was completely unnecessary.

So what do you think: did I overreact?

It looks like her elbow but I agree she looks like a young girl. Mid teens perhaps.

No it’s not.

god have we really lost sight of what a slim woman looks like. This is just so disturbing,

iamnotalemon · 08/01/2025 11:17

Also, as someone else mentioned the knickers look like the same ones you'd get in primark. You've been ripped off. But I guess they need to pay for their 'risqué' marketing somehow 🤣

Is this the picture. Sorry OP but I don't think she's teenager-esq at all.

I do think it's unnecessary boob though! https://stripeandstare.com/blogs/news/what-does-being-a-b-corp-business-mean

what a weird comment. Your comment before editing was even weirder. She looks like a normal slim adult woman.

Be as disturbed as you like. Facially as well as body wise she looks about 15 or 16.

Without seeing the image I think it's impossible to say if you're being a prude or not.

I think you're being a bit weird to assume a model is a teenager because she's thin though. You say the company is Stripe & Stare. They use models of all sizes and ages and they sell underwear so models in underwear is what I would expect from their marketing. Are they are only supposed to use models with body types you approve of? Some adult women are thin. Some teenagers aren't.

Obviously you're totally entitled to complain if you feel it was inappropriate though - and you obviously do. So I'm not sure why you're looking for other people's validation.

Edited.

I edited as on the company website I couldn’t see her face and yes she looks young and under developed with no muscle. Then when I saw the picture here I could see her face and decided she looked like a mid teen. She resembles a teenage Brook Shields.

I was going to vote YABU due to "thin" being conflated with underage. However I had a look at their website and I find it very disturbing that they're selling knickers with incredibly childish prints and colours for grown women. Pink with stars, pastel leopard print, hot pink with rainbow spots. WTF. That same style of underwear is literally only sold in toddler, girls and teenage sections in mainstream stores.

It definitely smacks of encouraging grown women to cosplay as underage girls for men of extremely dubious taste. Without going into too much detail, there are multiple porn categories where actresses wear children's knickers with cute patterns and designs to make them appear like teens (or worse). That brand seems to be playing heavily into the market under the guise of being comfortable or sustainable. No other lingerie company offers adult size knickers with those sort of kiddy designs on them.

This is so very sad. How are those patterns childish? I thought you were going to say they were selling Paw Patrol for adults! And even then if that’s what you want to wear who am I to judge.

At what age are we supposed to age out of these patterns and presumably into what… sexy lingerie, sucky in pants, over the stomach knickers or your basic black, white and browns? The ones you listed are my basic every day go to style. Not too sexy and not too boring.

FWIW I would class my pastel leopard print pants as sexy and not childish tyvm.

No other lingerie company offers adult size knickers with those sort of kiddy designs on them.

Incorrect. You can buy these styles from the majority of lingerie companies. I buy mine from Boux Avenue, Lounge Underwear and Victoria’s Secret. They obviously all specialise in sexier underwear but they sell these as your every day stuff too. I’ve even seen pastel leopard print knickers in M&S! I’m sure you’d be aghast if you ever walked into the Primark women’s underwear section. They have stands and stands of the stuff.

Startinganew32 · 08/01/2025 11:21

I’m shocked that someone thinks this is a 15 year old. If someone said she was 36 I’d believe them.

Am I being prudish, or do I have a point?

Yes. 15/16.

Beeloux · 08/01/2025 11:21

YABVU you do realise some woman are flat chested? I have Pcos and naturally completely flat chested (AA) and slim.

Crazycatlady79 · 08/01/2025 11:22

I think you're being ridiculous. The company uses a range of 'body types' to advertise their produce and there is nothing about a female nipple that is offensive or inappropriate.

pumpkinpillow · 08/01/2025 11:22

WinterBones · 08/01/2025 11:04

i'm sorry, are you equating plus size women in stockings to being fetish images?

I think it's the poses some of them strike - you don't need to pout or look coquettish to model stockings.

Haggia · 08/01/2025 11:22

AmIJustAPrude · 08/01/2025 10:33

Oh my god, I'm in absolute hysterics! I've just zoomed right in and you are absolutely right, it's her elbow! 😂What an absolute tit, excuse the pun!

To make it worse, I'm a lesbian- you think I'd be able to tell the difference between an elbow and a breast!

I'm so sorry for wasting everyone's time- I now need to send a grovelling apology to the company regarding me email! Any suggestions for how to phrase it?!

This is quite possibly the stupidest thing I have ever done in my life.

Laughing so much here about it being an elbow! Sure the company will see the funny side too OP.

RexsSoupCan · 08/01/2025 11:22

TheWonderhorse · 08/01/2025 10:07

I tried to research the company and the models and now have pants in a basket. Fuck's sake.

Me too! My fat ass is no good for unforgiving next, and M&S seem to have stopped doing a normal knicker now.. they look comfy but £18 a pair is a lot to try out 😮

“Underdeveloped” is a very weird way to describe a woman who is clearly at least mid 20s, with a completely normal slim body.

I am slimmer than that model. I am in my mid 50s. You would be able to tell I am not a young woman as my skin does not look like the models.
There is more than just shape that indicates someone's age.

Her face doesn't show on the desktop site, so I hadn't seen it. That looks like a full grown woman. Not even a particularly young one.

Monwmum · 08/01/2025 10:58

I agree with you OP. I reported an advert that kept appearing on my FB feed from Sloggi. It had a young man in boxers and a woman's cardigan (strange in itself but not the problem)...the issue was that the focus was directly on the bulge in his pants and it was in your face so to speak! Really not what I wanted to see on my feed and in my opinion unnecessary and inappropriate.

I am FAR from a prude but I think these companies need to take more responsibility with their advertising. Everything has become so over sexualised.

Everything has always been sexualised, including advertising for underwear. Two woman lying on the grass minding their own business is fairly tame compared to what was going on first years ago. Tits ahoy and bulges galore. In your face.

This is how advertising has always worked since advertising began. This isn't a new phenomenon.
