Am I being prudish, or do I have a point?

NC for this.

I've just sent the following email to a company I ordered underwear from:

I've just received my order confirmation and was quite shocked by the accompanying image. I don't want to screenshot it to resend, so hopefully you can work out the image I mean: it is of two women/girls lying on their fronts outside wearing black pants.

The woman (I hope) or girl on the left is very thin, which immediately made me assume she was a teenager. One of her breasts is clearly visible.

I'm not prudish about breasts at all, but it made me extremely uncomfortable to receive an image of what appears to be an almost-naked teenage girl. Given you also sell bras, it seems totally unnecessary for her to be completely topless.

I recommend you review the images you send out to your customers, as this has put me off using your company again.

As I say, I don't have an issue with breasts- I've breastfed in public many a time. It was mainly the fact that, based on her body shape, the woman/girl in the photo looks very young (post-pubescent, but pre-adult) and the exposed breast was completely unnecessary.

So what do you think: did I overreact?

At a quick glance I thought it was a boob too - I wonder if they realised.

I was going to vote YABU due to "thin" being conflated with underage. However I had a look at their website and I find it very disturbing that they're selling knickers with incredibly childish prints and colours for grown women. Pink with stars, pastel leopard print, hot pink with rainbow spots. WTF. That same style of underwear is literally only sold in toddler, girls and teenage sections in mainstream stores.

It definitely smacks of encouraging grown women to cosplay as underage girls for men of extremely dubious taste. Without going into too much detail, there are multiple porn categories where actresses wear children's knickers with cute patterns and designs to make them appear like teens (or worse). That brand seems to be playing heavily into the market under the guise of being comfortable or sustainable. No other lingerie company offers adult size knickers with those sort of kiddy designs on them.

How ridiculous. Why can't grown women like colours and patterns?

BlueMoanday · 08/01/2025 10:50

@User776532 I'm not saying those sites don't exist (puke) but I have friends in their forties who dress in this cutesie style - for themselves. Not for cosplay or the gratification of anyone else. I am really happy that those clothes exist in accessible sizes for her.

coralsky · 08/01/2025 10:50

Honestly imagine working for this company and receiving op's email 🙄😂

Gettingslimmer · 08/01/2025 10:51

What am I even reading, why would anyone assume that was a teenager, or that was a breast, with a nipple. I mean good grief,

pumpkinpillow · 08/01/2025 10:53

What?! Me wearing hot pink knickers with stars on encourages me to do absolutely nothing.

The only thing putting me off is the price. I'm not paying £18 for a pair of pants!

OMFG this thread is getting better and better by the minute😂

Some of us perfectly grown-up women like a bit of colour. Since when is pastel leopard print a toddler item? 😂

Can I introduce you to brands like "Scamp and Dude", or "rainbows and sprinkles" which can't be accused of being a porn supplier.

I am middle age, and I wear biker jackets, smart suits or unicorn leggings if I want to!

RhiWrites · 08/01/2025 10:54

You thought her elbow was a hanging boob? That’s so funny.

The image is fine and YABU.

DUsername · 08/01/2025 10:54

Oh wow 😂 maybe they'll send you a Specsavers voucher op 🫢

user3827 · 08/01/2025 10:54

Agree to an extent, but I've noticed young adults these days do like dressing up like kids - the kidults. Unfortunately, paedos are taking advantage of this to (try to) get closer to kids.

Firstly top marks for the diagram. A standout example.

Secondly, I support you commenting on anything that you think protects vulnerable people which I suppose your aim. No harm in questioning something even if you don't get it right every occasion.

I personally wouldn't agree that model looks teenage or that the shot is inappropriate. She looks like a slim adult woman modelling quite a demure pair of undies.

I think they're going for a range of shapes and sizes with age appropriate models rather than waif like teenagers. The second model in frame isn't especially large but she is taller and curvier as well as positioned in front of the one you mentioned. I think this might contribute to the first looking smaller at first glance.

The fuck?

So grown women aren't allowed to buy patterned pants now because of paedophiles? Come again?

I dress for me, and wear bright comfy pants every day, I will not be considering whether as a 43 year old woman my pants might encourage me to pretend to be a child for a sick fucker. Madness.

murasaki · 08/01/2025 10:58

What a wonderful piece of idiocy, complete with the finest diagram MN has ever seen!

Monwmum · 08/01/2025 10:58

I agree with you OP. I reported an advert that kept appearing on my FB feed from Sloggi. It had a young man in boxers and a woman's cardigan (strange in itself but not the problem)...the issue was that the focus was directly on the bulge in his pants and it was in your face so to speak! Really not what I wanted to see on my feed and in my opinion unnecessary and inappropriate.

I am FAR from a prude but I think these companies need to take more responsibility with their advertising. Everything has become so over sexualised.

Sedgwick · 08/01/2025 10:59

@AmIJustAPrude don’t worry about it, you made an honest mistake. S&S’s founders and bosses are female, just be honest and apologise. Not a big deal. I count myself as slightly prudish and it’s good we keep an eye on things!

TooManyChristmasCards · 08/01/2025 10:44

I hadn't seen that when I replied.

I am not sure why the police would be bothered if a FEMALE has marketing material on their phone about bog standard FEMALE underwear 🙄

I might even have things about male underwear on my phone and I am a woman.

Where has the OP mentioned the police?

Yes I totally agree you get the occasional quirky adult who loves bright colours and textures. Totally fine with that and I'm sure a small subset of their customers are just women who like fun patterns. I'm one myself so I don't judge anyone who are buying it for themselves. However even I find their designs a bit too extreme and also extremely overpriced for what they are. Those knickers look like the £2 pile from Primark and are being sold for £25 per piece?!

Despite all adults who like quirky styles, one can assume the majority of middle-aged women don't choose rainbow coloured pastel polka dot underwear by default. They seem to be mixing the more dubious pre-teen designs with more normal ones so feels more harmless.

When she explained why she wouldn't screenshot the message. She's a teacher so it's understandable.

You're free to think that, but I disagree- if, god forbid, I was ever accused of anything by a pupil, my phone would be searched by police. They are able to access deleted images.

nodramaplz · 08/01/2025 11:03

I'm thin and in my forties- my body is amazing as is my skin!
Your assumption is out of order!!

Blueberrycreampie · 08/01/2025 11:03

This has reminded me that many years ago - 50+ my aunt wrote into a Scottish newspaper complaining about the word boob. Many many people agreed with her I. The comments. Around the same time my own mum through out my copy of Cosmopolitan as there was a nude ( not completely though) picture of Burt Reynolds as a centrefold, and she was shocked and disgusted. I, however had no interest I. Looking at Burt Reynolds so she need not have worried. In many ways I would love to return to those days.

canyouletthedogoutplease · 08/01/2025 11:03

OP you'll go down in the annals of Stripe and Stare comms office history, you'll be the talk of the team for 2025, and probably get an award at the end of year bash and complaining for a ridiculous reason will now on be known as Doing an Elbow Woman.

Even if it was a breast and not an elbow, (she's got phenomenal core if she's balancing on her left nipple), if you think believe over 18 and she presumably knew why she was taking her clothes off and being photographed, is the problem that she's a slim woman and we needed to be able to see her face so we could make sure for definite that she wasn't under 18? How could we do that from her face anyway?

I'm so baffled, I think you might need to go back to bed with a brew and sleep this off.

Not Snag is it? They're well known for their weird fetish type advertising, with either men in tights or very large women in stockings etc

i'm sorry, are you equating plus size women in stockings to being fetish images?
