Rachel from accounts has crashed the economy

1000 replies

Almn0etd · 07/01/2025 21:01

So borrowing costs are now even higher than when Liz Truss was around.

The economy is well and truly cooked and in a far worse shape now that Rachel accounts is in charge.

Why isn’t this dominating the news cycle? Because it’s Labour.

The Tories were atrocious. Labour are an indescribable disaster for this country, surpassing the lowest of the low bars. Cue Labour apologists who don’t mind being made poorer and having the country destroyed, as long it’s Labour doing it to them.

No we haven't forgotten and they lost the election.
I also agree that the Prime Minister should take responsibility for a budget that damages the economy and stuns the markets.

They both should

Agreed, but I think we all know who will be carrying the can this time.

Papyrophile · 12/01/2025 18:13

Frankly, I think Starmer should invite Sunak back as Chancellor in an ackowledgement that we need a Government of all the talents RIGHT NOW. I remain to be convinced that Labour have the people for this situation. Milliband is adding to everyone's energy costs via his renewable energy promise. There was an interesting idea to regionalise power costs in the Times today that I thought seemed quite practical.

Labourites would never. He does predict failings and could turn it around.

@TheNuthatch I hadn’t heard of Jones but on googling your dh might have a point

He’d have to reverse a lot. If that fails just let Sunak have the keys back

TheNuthatch · 12/01/2025 19:14

That's the problem though isn't it, they can change the Chancellor but I doubt Starmer would agree to change course. He is so bloody dogmatic.
I think they need to throw this budget in the bin, admit it was a fuck up,.and start again, as Hunt did. I can't see it happening though.

TheNuthatch · 12/01/2025 19:15

And yes to Sunak!

I think is a good assessment - Starmer is brittle and is very much a ‘do as I say’, rather than ‘do as I do’.

Evidently, he doesn’t brook criticism.

Fine, let Reeves be the catalyst to sink this shower of a Government.

Either way, there will be an emergency budget, I am sure.

TheNuthatch · 12/01/2025 20:07

I never thought I'd say it, but I actually feel sorry for Reeves. I can't help thinking she's been used as a crash test dummy. She looks so out of her depth in interviews.
On the other hand, I need them to get rid of her quickly and get the economy back on the rails.

User135644 · 12/01/2025 20:14

friendlycat · 12/01/2025 15:55

I too think she’s doomed now. She’s obviously loosing the support of some colleagues. It’s all down to the markets now. But who has any credibility to replace her and make extreme corrections to her budget?

I think Labour either need to sack Starmer and Reeves or call another election and admit that they aren't up to it for the good of the country.

Let the Tories and Reform form a coalition of national unity. Sunak back as Chancellor, Farage can finally be PM, Jenrick Home Sec, Lee Anderson chief whip and Hunt Foreign Sec. That'll calm the markets and get Musk off our backs and maybe willing to invest in the UK.

Starmer's only move left otherwise is to beg Sunak to come back as Chancellor and run a government of national unity with Kemi's Conservatives.

Problem is they were never ready for government. Labour lost badly in 2019 and it was assumed they'd be out for at least another 10 years. A lot of their more talented or experienced MPs left during the Corbyn years.

Then Boris scandals followed by Liz Truss and suddenly they're a nap to win an election. But what with? There's no talent left.

It's certainly evident that there was no plan

Sadly, I think this gets worse before it gets better.

The animal spirits in the bond and currency markets are calling. And Labour will shortly have to contend with a hostile Trump administration.

These are moments of extreme peril for Starmer and his chums.

TheNuthatch · 12/01/2025 20:58

I remember just before Truss resigned, Sky News had a live tracker permanently on screen so we could watch sterling fall in real time. I wonder if they will show it again.

Off topic but this is the first time in ages I've seen the correct spelling 'cue' used in an OP instead of the incorrect 'queue' and it's heartening to see.

Yeah. It gives one hope that we'll see fewer impulses being 'reigned in' and not quite so much 'towing the line'.

Labour have to go, Starmer has to go. Bring Conservatives back, get Sunak back in as chancellor and Farage as PM or foreign sec who can deal with Trump.

This can't go on.

Dream on. This is like the only chance they could have got in. They will never call an election and back down. The country would go to shit but they will remain. The only things lefties are good at is hating and moaning. Therefore, the campaign against Boris with lies and smears was their biggest achievement. Now watch the country being really destroyed and go backwards with a heavily devaluated currency.

friendlycat · 12/01/2025 22:27

It’s certainly truly depressing. Businesses and business owners, of which I am one, certainly aren’t looking forward to this period of awful economic conditions.

I hate the ideologies of labour and their hard commitment to the public sector at all costs. They always seem to ignore that the private sector provides and pays the bills.

I counter this by saying the public sector is important and provides essential services that are needed, but there’s arguably huge waste and under productivity in certain sectors.

But essentially without growth in the private sector the public sector can’t operate as it’s the private sector that pays the bill. We have a public sector that’s just too top heavy. Not necessarily in the essential services but in the civil service, quangos and beyond.

There are too many people working in government funded sectors that have no idea about revenue generating roles and working within budgets and business parameters.

With the incoming austerity and cuts to benefits, this may become a necessary skill.

IItisymoi · 13/01/2025 11:18

I was saying to my partner several months ago that much of the world has changed for the worse so western (European and uSA) governments) will have to come to terms with the failure of RAMPANT consumerism and shortfalls in healthcare and welfare where the pensions cannot be sustained as the original premise after WW2 has not been considering longer lifespans and how to finance continual growth. the rapid rise in social media together with minimal sensorship is allowinf LIES to be told and propagated worldwide so almost everyone is subjet to a whirlwind of lies which ignore the realities or world trade and the idea of continual increase in consumption. The world needs to slow down and play with the toys we already have and not expect more.

I’m not sure Starmer will concede anything either and will keep Reeves in

He’d rather see it all decline than acknowledge his and Reeves’ accountability
