Rachel from accounts has crashed the economy

1000 replies

Almn0etd · 07/01/2025 21:01

So borrowing costs are now even higher than when Liz Truss was around.

The economy is well and truly cooked and in a far worse shape now that Rachel accounts is in charge.

Why isn’t this dominating the news cycle? Because it’s Labour.

The Tories were atrocious. Labour are an indescribable disaster for this country, surpassing the lowest of the low bars. Cue Labour apologists who don’t mind being made poorer and having the country destroyed, as long it’s Labour doing it to them.

Confidence is key to promoting growth and stability - since the Labour Party gained power they have talked endlessly about the poor state of the economy and how awful things are. This approach is not helpful - yes we need a reality not a fairytale but talking the economy down encourages people and businesses to delay spending which only makes the situation worse.

noworklifebalance · 09/01/2025 16:31

I suspect the discussion has moved on from “Rachel in accounts” but, whilst I don’t have an issue with this per se (male politicians have also been belittled in the past), I do have a major issues with the subheading half way down this article, depressingly written by at least one woman journalist:
www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c1404j3xmxdo

turul · 09/01/2025 16:54

I just read that there was a debate in Parliament on the Economy. But it looks as if Rachel from accounts was WFH today.
She was not in the House.

Monka · 09/01/2025 17:16

I voted YABU the mess that Liz Truss with her meddling costing us more in our mortgages and the impact on our pensions only backing down at the last minute, because otherwise we would have all lost the value of our pensions (she still managed to wipe off around 425 billion on our collective pension fund assets). The Bank of England tried to do everything they could to mitigate what she did but she had to back down because there was nothing else they could do. Frankly working in financial services it was scary to see it all play out.

To sort out the sewage crisis that our water companies have left us in is going to cost us billions (around 3 billion of public money) and the Tories did bugger all to prevent the water companies paying out to their shareholders.

Labour have inherited a mess, they are not perfect and will make some mistakes but I would rather them than anyone else. Also their leader won’t be found hiding in a fridge avoiding questions from journalists.

I didn’t vote for Labour in this election but I am glad they are in power.

PandoraSox · 09/01/2025 17:22

It wasn't Truss' fault according to her.

Re: Reeves not being in the house for the Urgent Question. Those questions are routinely answered by junior ministers rather than a SofS/Chancellor. Completely normal.

sushibelt · 09/01/2025 17:25

You might have some sort of valid argument but I stopped caring about your point with the Rachel from Accounts thing. If you want people to understand your arguement and maybe change their own minds don't start flinging random insults into the mix

Sugarnspicenallthingsnaice · 07/01/2025 22:39

Anytime I see any post on social media using stupid nicknames for politicians I immediately discount the person posting them as being unable to think deeply or for themselves, and ignore whatever they have to say.

(See also: 'wake up people' and any mention of sheep or snowflakes.)

Edited

Same..shame really as there could be really valid points being made, I've no idea

Dismaljanuary · 09/01/2025 17:29

They have been incredibly pessimistic telling us how 14 years of tory rule has put us in the shit.
They spoke a lot about being a great place to invest but saying it and doing it are very different things.

They just depressed us all really.
I didn't vote for them (this time) but I was extremely keen and hopeful for change like everyone else I suppose.

I did hear on the radio however an eccomics expert (!!) saying after January, the tax receipts maybe better than they thought.

Mirabai · 09/01/2025 17:32

Labour have inherited a mess, they are not perfect and will make some mistakes but I would rather them than anyone else.

That’s setting the bar awfully low. I’d rather neither party made massive mistakes with the economy.

Just remember to keep repeating that to yourself when the weakening pound sees you paying more at the till and when the volatility in the markets feeds through to the mortgage.

So would we all but most of us accept that perfection is an unrealistic aspiration.

@Madamegreen Yes Clueless is a word i would use to describe someone who doesn't know what gilt yields are or how they effect the economy at all levels.

This is coming from someone who quotes Sky and Radio 4...😂

comedia24 · 09/01/2025 18:23

Has anyone looked and seen that many prices have gone up on food in the supermarkets etc in the last few days?

I feel part of the reason people are so disappointed is buyer's remorse - the idea that things would keep getting better slowly doesn't seem to have materialised. I genuinely thought they'd do a slightly better job than they have so far, they had the credentials.

BIossomtoes · 09/01/2025 17:36

Where did I mention perfection? There is a chasm between perfection and massive mistakes.

I expect competence, so should we all.

She was on her way to China

She better be coming back with a decent trade deal then.
She needs to tell them we will not have tariffs on Chinese cars. We don’t manufacture electric cars, no need to tariff them. Cheaper electric cars will mean quicker uptake.

Experience.

LSE shouldn't be in the Russell Group as it generates very little in Research funding - I wonder why that is.
More Cabinet members have been inept at execution and delivery since the 1990s. The professional wordsmith, going from Uni, to think-tank, to bag carrier to MP is not working.
Too many Labour politicians have spent time at Harvard, committed to ideologies that nobody has ever implemented successfully.
With a huge majority, compassion and effective use of taxpayer's funds for 12 months to yield the funds to spend creatively for growth should have been obvious politics.
The very senior members of government who abstained last night demonstrated no political nous whatsoever. Next up, they will be cancelling local elections.

I expect it was a tongue in cheek comment referencing the 12 out of 21 councils that have local election in May. They want to ask Ministers to delay the local elections, because of what was announced last year by the Government about the redesign of local Government. If they agree to delaying local elections I expect all hell will break loose in the press, and rightly so. A better plan and timing would have helped…

Thank you, I didn’t know that. It was actually the comment on abstentions that piqued my interest.

Oh I see! Sorry!

As I understand it it’s not unusual for ministers not to turn up for votes on amendments such as that put to the house, so at one level it’s a storm in a teacup. But, it is unusual when there’s a three line whip for everyone else. Speculation is that by doing so they have given themselves the opportunity to (in their minds, though no one else’s) to save some face if (when?) the inevitable second public inquiry does take place.

BIossomtoes · 09/01/2025 23:12

Never apologise for educating someone! I’m very grateful.

The news tells us that she was on her way to Beijing to re-establish economic and financial discussions between the two nations.

LSE is relatively small.

The large research grants are in STEM, of which it has very little. Of course it doesn’t have the revenue.

However it is literally a world leader in several fields, especially econometrics. LSE is an asset to the Russell Group.
