I know I am a bit, but I still wish smoking swearing teenagers wouldn't choose the local playground to hang out

because it means that I can't stay there with my children, too much tension, hate the smoking, too much effing and blinding.

dh has pointed out that they have nowhere else to go, but it still annoys me.

It is very very annoying.

here's a good approach. Go and talk to them about their career and education choices.

You won't see them for bloody dust!

WallOfSilence · 03/05/2008 22:58

YANBU...playgrounds by definition are for children to play in... not a hang out stop for teenagers.

They shouldn't hang out in large groups anyway, they're far too intimidating!

SmugColditz · 03/05/2008 23:00

Yes, they should be dispersed if in groups of more than 2 .... oh no hold on, that was Nazi Poland.

UnquietDad · 03/05/2008 23:02

Play Chopin at them.

I feel so much more relaxed and safe in our city's bus interchange now that they play restful classical piano music over the PA in the late evenings. (No joke.)

WallOfSilence · 03/05/2008 23:03

That's not what I meant colditz, please don't twist my words to suit your meaning.

I meant that around here they hang out in groups of about 16 around the bus stops! The local police involved in neighbourhood policing are doing their best to try & sort it out & get the a youth club or something, they're just bored.

Please don't make out I am stupid & to insinuate I am a nazi is not only wrong but offending.

SmugColditz · 03/05/2008 23:11

Oh good grief get the plug out of ... no, that's probably insulting too.

It was a joke. I'm not good at remembering smilies, yes I know the internet can be a tricksy place when it comes to inferences, I wasn't intending to imply that you are a real genuine nazi.

Here's the thing ... this is the internet, it is full of real people, and real people are not paid councilors or personal advisers. That inevitably results in people Being Very Flippant and unhelpful.

And I am one of those people sometimes.

scottishmummy · 03/05/2008 23:11

emanka YANBU we get this too all the neds youffs smoking, swearing, leaving debris etc.

emkana · 03/05/2008 23:13

colditz, I know what you are saying and I don't wish to antagonize you, but flippancy aside I find it's generally a good idea not to use the word nazi unless you talk about the actual ones. Always leads to all kinds of trouble.

OP posts:
WallOfSilence · 03/05/2008 23:15

Ok.

I do know that. I also know you are good at arguing & holding your own & can come up with stuff that would make me look daft....I was simply getting my 2p in first....

So, sorry I guess.

mshadowsisfab · 03/05/2008 23:17

yabu
your little ones will be teens oneday.

emkana · 03/05/2008 23:18

Well I hope they won't be hanging out at the playground swearing and smoking - these kids didn't look any older than 12.

OP posts:
nzshar · 03/05/2008 23:20

Oh dear I was one of those teenagers about 20 years ago. Have times not changed then

mshadowsisfab · 03/05/2008 23:21

I was one of them

you have to rememeber that they look like adults

sound like adults

dress like adults

and often have the vocabulary of adults

But they are NOT. They are developmentally immature. they are still children. The average 14 year old has less empathy than the average nine year old. Their brains are still quite quite empty of adult responses.

They cannot see your point of view, they cannot see you at all. They don't want to have sex with you and you're not shouting, therefore you don't exist.

And I really hope that me being stupid doesn't make anyone else feel stupid. I was just being very silly. I should have ed

YANBU at all. I detest it.

Although, I have to say, we have a group of teens that hang out at our local swings, and they are as good as gold. NO bad language (well, sometimes, but they DO curb it when the younger kids arrive) and they make a point of binning their rubbish.

What I REALLY hate is the group of alcolholics that hang around the other park day and night, leaving cans, bottles and fag ends all over the place. Disgraceful. And they are NOT teens.

expatinscotland · 04/05/2008 00:07

YANBU.

The nearest town to hear just spent a fortune revamping the local playpark.

And are now inundated with complaints about gangs of teens hanging out there, intimidating and bullying the younger children (warning them they're not allowed to use certain equipment till they're in P7 or not allowing younger children to use the equipment), swearing at young children and at adults who challenge them, etc.

Having nothing to do isn't an excuse to behave like neds.

scottishmummy · 04/05/2008 00:12

shame they cant hang out at the chippy rather than playpark

nappyaddict · 04/05/2008 00:12

i don't mind teenagers using the equipment after all they are still children too and if they can get enjoyment out of it then fine. what i do object to is about about 10 of them crowding round the top of the slide so my poor ds keeps going up and waiting forever until i go over and say "sorry could you please let my little boy through and have his turn because he would like to use the slide."

expatinscotland · 04/05/2008 00:14

the chippies are too near the high street and pubs in our town, and there they get moved along by Strathclyde's finest.

but the playparks are generally in quieter areas so they tend to be taken over by neds and bams youths in search of 'something to do'.

scottishmummy · 04/05/2008 00:15

just me that like the chippy then

expatinscotland · 04/05/2008 00:15

the jakeys have pretty much taken over the castle ruins and they run off the teens, who head back down the hill to the playpark.

expatinscotland · 04/05/2008 00:17

i prefer the asian chippy because they do kebabs and pizzas in there and the other one doesn't.

well, there's another one you can sit in, but it's minging! fish is old and burnt, chips are cold and chewy.

and it costs a packet, too!

all the OAPs go in there and think it's good, but it's the boak.
