Do I need to call the doc for my DD ?

Experienced mum here with childhood illnesses but haven't faced this exact situation before so just looking for advice.

DD had one bout of looser bowel movement ( sorry ) last night. Then woke up during the night and threw up..

She complained about a stomach ache a lot and then fell asleep.

This morning she's got a fever of 39.2 ( I gave her calpol and it's gone down to 38.7 ). She's just morning the whole time that her stomach hurts.

She's not ' done ' anything. No more D or V, so far. She wants an ice lolly.

I'm just concerned about the stomach ache complaints. She doesn't get sickness bugs that much at all.

It seems a bit quick to call a doc or am I being too chilled about it ? I haven't had to call a doctor for her sickness bugs in the past. But she also doesn't usually moan about stomach pain the way she is. I keep asking her if she needs to be sick and she says no. The fact she wants an ice lolly probably means she isn't nauseous. I don't know.

Any views welcome.

Do you get stomach pain when you have a vomiting bug?

myddill · 07/01/2025 09:51

She's nearly 5 btw.

Sounds like the flu and it has only been one day. What exactly could the doctor do at this point?

Yeah but usually stuff happens. Like D or V. Not endless hours of complaining and nothing happening.

Exactly why I haven't called.

But wondered if anyone had any idea if there are any red flags here that I'm not aware of.

But what could a doctor do? It sounds like a classic d&v bug and that can cause stomach pain.

i’d see how today goes.

rosiethegremlin · 07/01/2025 09:54

Sounds like D&V. I wouldn't contact the dr unless it had been 48 hours without any improvement

BoilingHotand50something · 07/01/2025 09:56

I would just keep an eye. She probably strained her tummy whilst throwing up. The fact that she is asking for a lolly is good. Keep her hydrated and see how she gets on today. But sounds like a classic bug to me.

If she goes downhill, obviously seek medical advice.

Disclaimer - I am not a HCP.

bridgetreilly · 07/01/2025 09:58

I would keep an eye on it but not call yet. Doesn’t sound like appendix.

Crumpleton · 07/01/2025 09:58

Keep an eye on her temperature, I'd be more concerned if it rises to high.
There are so many illnesses around.

Other than that if DD has stopped with the S&D I'd give liquids only for the day, unless she becomes really hungry and even then only something light, tuck her up nice and cosy.

Hopefully she'll feel better soon

I definitely agree about the lolly.

I think she's alright.

I wonder if it's a stomach bug or food poisoning - I think stomach bug.

I hope we don't get it !!! Agh !

You might not all get it. My DD had a full day of vomiting a couple of weeks ago and no one else was affected. She's picky about her food so I didn't think it was something she'd eaten (as she always eats the same limited foods). Assumed it was norovirus and that we were all just lucky

bigkidatheart · 07/01/2025 10:30

Is it her stomach that aches or further down near her belly button, kids often say their tummy hurts but its their bowels.

Either way lots of little bugs going around, as long as her temp doesn't spike again and she has plenty of fluids, I would give it a few days, ice lolly is fantastic idea

myddill · 07/01/2025 10:37

Bless her she isn't eating her ice lolly.

She points at the middle of her stomach when describing where it hurts.

Please do get her seen by a doctor. High temp, abdominal pain, loose bowel movement x1 and vomited. Now not even eating a lolly. This could be appendicitis. Better to get it checked out. Good luck to you all

She did eat the lolly after a bit and then threw it up again. Which is to be expected I guess. It was just a small lolly but probably too soon for her to keep down.

This would not concern me. Watch and wait for now. Sounds like a common stomach virus.

Endofyear · 07/01/2025 12:18

I don't think it's anything to be concerned about at the present time - I would watch and wait. If the pain gets worse ring 111 for advice. Otherwise I'd give calpol and keep her hydrated.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 07/01/2025 12:23

The high temp and stomach pain could be appendicitis surely? Happy to be corrected if I'm wrong.

I don't know. Temp has gone back up. She's sleeping now.

I think you know yourself that this needs to be checked out, you know, but can’t can explain it.

I would say go with your instincts on this one.

Get it checked out. Good luck x

3luckystars · 07/01/2025 12:29

Can she jump up and down in one leg?
Even if she can and is moaning in pain even calpol, along with the fact that you are asking here , yes I would get her seen by a doctor today. (I’m in another country though so it’s easy for me to say that.)

What are your options?

She's sleeping now. I think if it was appendicitis she would be complaining of a lot more pain.

I've called 111 anyway and a doc will call me back in a bit.
