Do I need to call the doc for my DD ?

Experienced mum here with childhood illnesses but haven't faced this exact situation before so just looking for advice.

DD had one bout of looser bowel movement ( sorry ) last night. Then woke up during the night and threw up..

She complained about a stomach ache a lot and then fell asleep.

This morning she's got a fever of 39.2 ( I gave her calpol and it's gone down to 38.7 ). She's just morning the whole time that her stomach hurts.

She's not ' done ' anything. No more D or V, so far. She wants an ice lolly.

I'm just concerned about the stomach ache complaints. She doesn't get sickness bugs that much at all.

It seems a bit quick to call a doc or am I being too chilled about it ? I haven't had to call a doctor for her sickness bugs in the past. But she also doesn't usually moan about stomach pain the way she is. I keep asking her if she needs to be sick and she says no. The fact she wants an ice lolly probably means she isn't nauseous. I don't know.

Any views welcome.

When my young daughter had appendicitis she also had a very fast heart rate (130 while she was sleeping / resting). And pain on walking.

birdglasspen2 · 08/01/2025 07:29

I’d just look out for appendicitis. The pain won’t go away and will get worse. I thought mine was food poisioning.

QuestionableMouse · 08/01/2025 15:11

How is your daughter doing @myddill ? ☺️

Fever still coming and going. But she's eating, playing, going to the loo. No mention of stomach pain. She has a red throat. Fever is pretty high and then goes down with calpol.

First day back at school tomorrow. I don't think she can go, sadly.

Yeah I do feel worried just because the fever is high on and off but I just don't see any point in seeing a doctor as they'll just say it's viral.

She's saying and drinking / playing sometimes.

She's now saying her tummy hurts again around the belly button.

You definitely can’t send her to school like that. Can she jump up and down on one leg?

Namechangedforgoodreasons · 08/01/2025 18:39

Children can get stomach pains from swollen abdominal glands. Too soon to call a doctor I reckon, and if it’s flu or any virus there’s not much they can do anyway.

Zanatdy · 08/01/2025 18:43

Appendicitis can present in the centre but is generally on lower right. When I had appendicitis I vomited once but was literally on the floor in agony. If you are worried again though, just call 111 again. I went to out of hrs GP (at the hospital so easy to send people down to A&E if needed) and was sent home and told to see GP in morning if no better. GP sent me to A&E. Assume she pressed in the appendix area and no reaction? Always better to be safe than sorry so don’t hesitate to call back if you’re worried. One of my 3 DC always gets a very high fever of 40 or just under when unwell. Does she normally run high fevers?

So difficult OP. There are a lot of bugs around
Dc2 was sick once in the night a few weeks ago, it was just bile despite having had a large dinner. He had a temperature, was very sleepy. Back to normal after 3 days.

Dc1 had a headache and temp for 2 days, felt nauseous, also sleepy but no sickness. Really odd bugs.

Hope your dd feels better soon.

when small children have a headache sometimes their stomach hurts

user1496146479 · 08/01/2025 19:04

She definitely cannot go back to school tomorrow

PollyPut · 09/01/2025 16:10

@myddill is she getting better now?

@myddill is she getting better now?

Thanks for asking ! Very kind for you to check in.

So she was really unwell again this morning, complaining of stomach pain again and then she was sick and had a fever.

But her fever then broke on its own and she seems like she's recovered now!

Not sure if school tomorrow is a good idea still.

Monday is probably our best bet. She's getting bored now though.

But no more fever now, no more complaints about stomach ache and eating normally.

sounds better.

School rules are usually that they can't go back in to school within 2 days of vomiting. So leave it until Monday

myddill · 09/01/2025 17:34

I also don't think she's strong enough to go to school. She's still up and down and wants to lie down a lot/ rest. Like after walking up the stairs and stuff like that. If she goes to school, it will tire her out and may take longer to recover. She'll hopefully be good to go in on Monday !

The doctor said that sometimes the viruses aren't as you would expect. Like when I get gastro or when my kids have had it before, it's usually quite a lot of d and v for a couple of days. Not just one vomit, then another randomly and then again a few days later. It's usually pretty full on and then tapers off. That's why I felt suspicious about how this presented, because I haven't experienced it presenting this way before. But apparently it can be more intermittent.
