Do I need to call the doc for my DD ?

Experienced mum here with childhood illnesses but haven't faced this exact situation before so just looking for advice.

DD had one bout of looser bowel movement ( sorry ) last night. Then woke up during the night and threw up..

She complained about a stomach ache a lot and then fell asleep.

This morning she's got a fever of 39.2 ( I gave her calpol and it's gone down to 38.7 ). She's just morning the whole time that her stomach hurts.

She's not ' done ' anything. No more D or V, so far. She wants an ice lolly.

I'm just concerned about the stomach ache complaints. She doesn't get sickness bugs that much at all.

It seems a bit quick to call a doc or am I being too chilled about it ? I haven't had to call a doctor for her sickness bugs in the past. But she also doesn't usually moan about stomach pain the way she is. I keep asking her if she needs to be sick and she says no. The fact she wants an ice lolly probably means she isn't nauseous. I don't know.

Any views welcome.

This is exactly how my daughter was when she caught the flu that had floored me for 2 wks. Few days of sickness and tummy aches, couple of days of temperatures and diarrhoea, zero appetite and very sleepy the entire time. Took her about 7 days to feel back to normal. She had the nasal flu vaccine at school so I think her body definitely coped better with it than it would have otherwise.

Vinvertebrate · 07/01/2025 13:15

Half of DS’ school are off with tummy bugs this week - I would not be concerned. Calpol, fluids when she can, rest.

myddill · 07/01/2025 09:52

Exactly why I haven't called.

But wondered if anyone had any idea if there are any red flags here that I'm not aware of.

Okay cool. I would say dehydration and not keeping anything down for a couple of days. Rash of any kind Temp lasting more than three days…..the usual

When she wakes if she's still complaining ask her to jump up and down. The surgeon my son seen when they thought he had appendicitis said if it's their appendix they wouldn't be able to do that and also the colour of the vomit is normally green

QuestionableMouse · 07/01/2025 15:05

My nephew presented with similar symptoms at the same age. He had appendicitis and by the time they were removing it he was seriously ill (and spent nearly three weeks in the RVI)

I'd take her to be checked and ask specifically about appendicitis.

QuestionableMouse · 07/01/2025 15:06

myddill · 07/01/2025 12:41

She's sleeping now. I think if it was appendicitis she would be complaining of a lot more pain.

I've called 111 anyway and a doc will call me back in a bit.

My nephew didn't - he said he had tummy ache but he wasn't in severe pain.

Kungfoopanda · 07/01/2025 15:21

I follow a couple of paediatricians online and they have had posts up recently about the current Flu and how it's presenting in kids. Definitely sounds like this. Look up Dr Niamh Lynch on Instagram. However, I think you've done the right thing phoning 111, hopefully the dr is able to reassure you

KurtCobainLover · 07/01/2025 15:24

I would get her checked for appendicitis. When my DS had it he only had mild pain at the beginning along with a high temperature.

Yorkshiregal1 · 07/01/2025 15:27

A similar bug went round my daughter's school and her temp wouldn't come down with Calpol. I took her to doctors who said ibuprofen would work better and it did. You can alternate ibuprofen and Calpol too.

elfshenanigans · 07/01/2025 15:31

DD was once admitted to hospital with similar complaints. Suspected appendicitis. In the end it wasn't the appendix, just gastroenteritis but I would get her seen to be on the safe side.

Sounds like the flu and it has only been one day. What exactly could the doctor do at this point?

The symptoms are more like D&V or food poisoning. Those would be my first thoughts rather than flu.

myddill · 07/01/2025 18:23

I did take her to the doc. Doc says she thinks it's just viral.

She's just had another temp spike to 40 degrees.

Not ideal, just sleeping now.

I'm a bit worried. She threw up twice only. But she didn't complain of stomach pain that much anymore. Bless her. It's gona be a long night.

If you're worried I'd take her back.

My nephew was seen at least three times before a senior consultant saw him and immediately diagnosed appendicitis. It's hard to spot with the tiny kids apparently.

3luckystars · 07/01/2025 21:28

Viral is code word for they haven’t a baldy notion. You are her mother and know her best x

Onthefence87 · 07/01/2025 21:59

I think the fact that she is requesting food, her temperature is coming down with calpol, are good signs.

But with the stomach pains do keep an eye out just incase of appendicitis.

Also, is she drinking and passing urine ok? As dehydration can be a risk with D&V.

Don't assume that they would complain of a lot more pain with appendicitis. Some people have high pain thresholds.

I would be concerned about appendicitis. Watch the temperature, write it down, track it. If she can't eat then that's another sign of appendicitis

Ask if there is still tummy pain and where it is - moving from centre of stomach to one side is classic sign of appendicitis.

myddill · 08/01/2025 06:46

Temp just keeps spiking to 40..

When calpol is working though, she's fine and eating and drinking. She has also been to the loo. ( pee, sorry ) a couple of times.

She's not complaining of pain and she's not thrown up or had diarrhoea. It's very strange.

She's just very hot. She's at 40 again now after I gave her calpol at midnight when she was again at 40 and she was also at 40 6 hours before that.

She seems ok in herself right now at 40, watching TV and drinking water. I can't give her calpol again until 8:30 am. And unsure if I should give her nurofen on an empty stomach..

@myddill please ask her if her tummy has stopped hurting now. Or if is is hurting, ask her to point to the bit that hurts.

If it's not hurting then you can probably rule out appendicitis.

If it is hurting then you absolutely need to know, and monitor the location of the pain.

She said a little bit, in the middle.

So it does sound like the flu now. And you can have the flu and a stomach bug at the same time.. I hope she feels better soon💗

GlitteryUnicornSparkles · 08/01/2025 07:03

Sounds like a normal bug to me. I doubt there is much a Dr could do at this point. Could you give her a hot water bottle to hold against her tummy if it hurts as that can often help.

myddill · 08/01/2025 07:03

But she hasn't been complaining about it..

KatieKat88 · 08/01/2025 07:11

Ibuprofen seems to lower my DD's temperature more effectively than calpol, have you tried that?

PollyPut · 08/01/2025 07:12

myddill · 08/01/2025 07:03

She said a little bit, in the middle.

OK, well just remember to ask again later today and monitor the stomach pain until it goes away. If it continues to hurt, combined with a high temperature, you cannot rule out appendicitis (which is commonly missed in children).

Hopefully it's not and is just a bug.

As others have said, make sure she's drinking lots of water.
