Memory Foam Mattress Failures

Posting in here out of sleep deprived desperation and not really knowing where else it belongs. In short got our first memory foam mattress four years ago and got rid of it 18 months later after it collapsed in the middle (Emma mattresses - absolute crap), got a temper mattress shortly after. We’ve now had it just over two years and over the past six months my half of the mattress has been getting progressively worse (I’m 60kg for reference). The last three months, four out of seven nights or more I’ve been waking up midway through the night with awful hip and back pain and just not getting back to sleep. The couch is more comfortable. My partner won’t have it that the (stupidly expensive) mattress is fucked/yet another memory foam piece of shit.
Been away for a week sleeping on a lovely pocket sprung thing and back to the bastard memory foam last night. Like clockwork, awake at 1am in excruciating pain - couldn’t get back to sleep properly and hips/lower back have subsequently hurt all day. I was in tears at one point.
I’m at the end of my tether and I want to bin the bastard thing. It was expensive but fuck it.

YABU - it can’t possibly be that bad.
YANBU - yeet the fucking thing out a window and get a pocket sprung mattress.

Any other experiences with bastard memory foam are appreciated.

Go to Jysk.. try them out. They let you have them for a long time and if no good can return them.
I've got their gold memory foam with cooling gel. I bought in their sale .. reduced from £800 to £300.
I'm severely disabled and in loads of pain.. Best one I've ever had.
Recommended to friends n family too and they haven't looked back.

I don’t think I can trust a third memory foam after this. I’m genuinely thinking about sleeping on the couch or sofa bed tonight because it is more comfortable.

We are going back to sprung mattresses as our second Simba memory foam one has gone the same way as the first. It’s potholed like a joke. The first one was awful after three months and so we returned it they sent a replacement which has lasted a year and a half but is now just awful.

Pancakeflipper · 06/01/2025 22:43

Several family members have had issues with memory foam so we've never ventured.
Also scared it will be too warm - I like coolness.

Pocket sprung with wool filling is working for for me at the moment.

Sparrow7 · 06/01/2025 22:45

I find foam mattresses too hot, however expensive.

specialsauce · 06/01/2025 22:47

Memory foam is the biggest load of crap in the world of sleep ever.

An ex boyfriend got one for his place and it was like sleeping on wet sand.

I ended the relationship (it was one of a fair few last straws)

(edit: they are also rubbish for sex, as well as sleeping - no bounce!)

HellsBalls · 06/01/2025 22:47

I’ve got an Ergoflex. It’s fantastic, even though it’s due for replacement (12 years old). I will be getting another.
That said, it does sleep warm, and my friend yeeted theirs and bought a latex mattress.

TrixieCat · 06/01/2025 22:48

Can you not go back to the company and complain? I'd have thought they should offer a solution if it's only a couple of years old.

As a side note, we've had an Otty hybrid mattress for 6.5 years now and it's still brilliant. I absolutely love it.

Ex BF had one and I used to wake up in pain, it was like a board, wretched thing.

strangeandfamiliar · 06/01/2025 22:50

Thought it was just me! We've gone back to pocket sprung after a memory foam failure. A couple of nights at a Premier Inn peaked me, as it was so much more comfortable. I have some back and hip pain issues so I get where you're coming from.

Trumptonagain · 06/01/2025 22:52

Tried a memory foam mattress years ago so may have improved since but I found whenever I turn over I slowly sank into it and it kept me awake each time it happened, found it really annoying.

We bought a Gel-tec type instead and it's so comfortable.

QueenOfWeeds · 06/01/2025 22:52

Get a sprung one. Our friends have an Emma mattress and I’m fine on it for one night but any more and it’s awful.

How big is your bed? Could you do zip-link singles so DH can have a crappy memory foam and you get a nice sprung one?

menopausalfart · 06/01/2025 22:52

I hate memory foam, it kills my back. Pocket sprung is far more comfortable, for me.

TheChosenTwo · 06/01/2025 22:53

I hate ours.
I sleep okay on it and do find it fine for positional comfort but it’s fucking roasting and a pain for sex as a pp mentioned, no bloody bounce!

fivebyfivebuffy · 06/01/2025 22:59

I hated mine
Have a combo one now which is pocket sprung with memory foam top

SheridansPortSalut · 06/01/2025 23:02

Memory foam is awful.

TiredCatLady · 06/01/2025 23:05

@specialsauce Yep, it’s like sleeping on hot quicksand. Fucking horrible.
I’m somewhat comforted it’s not just me. It is a zip link mattress but getting another to fit my half of the bed is nigh on impossible. So I’m going to have to just order a new one and take great pleasure in having a bonfire with this hellish thing.
Best one I’ve ever had was the Ikea pocket sprung one I had before the Emma atrocity.

TiredCatLady · 06/01/2025 23:08

@TheChosenTwo yep the lack of bounce makes it absolutely crap for that as well. I’m actually having fantasies about dumping it in the front garden and covering it with a can of petrol such is my hatred.
