To say most places are too cold to be enjoyable?

The cold snap has really emphasised this, but AIBU to say most places are freezing and it really puts me off going?

I love the idea of a cozy coffee shop, warm pub with a fire, warm restaurant and red wine.

in reality, most places are draughty, barely heated and you have to keep your coat on.

It's not the weather, as I've travelled in Europe to much colder places and everywhere is so toasty and lovely in comparison, even places that are warm in the summer seem to do winter heating well.

Is it just me, or are others often disappointed? I don't even think I'm a particularly 'cold' person.

I really wonder if anyone at all who has the authority to turn the heating up a bit at their business, has read this and will do it?

🤔🙏

Heatgen thermal top, fleece leggings, chunky jumper, Nordic socks, down coat, scarf, knee length boots and gloves. Not sure how much more I could add and still be able to move.

Indoors, no coat, boots or gloves, but still cold in the hairdresser.

The worst for it are swimming pools, almost none of them are tolerable for a leisure swim in the winter now.

Yes! I went to a soft play for the first time in a couple of years recently and just before i left i remembered that sometimes it used to be a bit nippy in there. Door opening a lot, ect ect. I grabbed a shawl scarf thing and put a t shirt under my jumper. Just in case. And advised other adult going to do the same.

Well thank goodness i did cos it was freezing! I kept my coat on and was so glad of the shawl scarf thing.

What did you have under your jumper before you added the t-shirt? No other layers at all? This time of year I’d have a long sleeved top on under a jumper, plus a vest if the weather was likely to be chilly. I sort of assume everyone does that - don’t they?

Yes we used to swim regularly and I have just had to stop going as getting cold makes me ill

BahHumbug24 · 05/01/2025 16:24

This has definitely got worse with the increase in energy bills. I ride horses and am used to moving around outside in the cold. But have also noticed some usually comfortable venues being too cold and draughty to enjoy.

I know this sounds patently obvious, but are you sure you’re dressing for the weather? Only I see so many people in the UK wearing clothing which is wildly inappropriate for the climate!

We seem to be a nation allergic to layering up, choosing sensible footwear and staying properly dry. I see so many people out in wet, icy, Baltic weather wearing shoes which aren’t even waterproof, let alone warm and cosy. And then they take off their coats and have one shirt and maybe a thin sweater on.

The solution is multiple light layers, easily removable if your destination turns out to be cosy but there in place to keep you warm if needed. Sturdy, waterproof shoes a non-negotiable.

I live in a supremely draughty and difficult to heat house where most of the warmth comes from fires (inefficient in general), and I’m rarely cold because every day I wear a merino wool vest, long sleeved cotton layer, heavier cotton layer, and thick wool cardigan if needed.

I’m perfectly warm outside. My issue is I don’t want to go for a treat, and have to dress like I’m exploring the artic!

For example, we toyed with the idea of going out for pizza later, but I just know that the restaurant I have in mind won’t be warm (large, wooden floors, bench seating) and it’s not coaxing me out from my house!

I’d like to have the cold walk there, and feel a nice welcoming warmth on arrival, not feel I have to sit there with my scarf on.

The freezing water for handwashing is another pet peeve!

Agree - pay a small fortune for a family membership at a premium club and my youngest won't get in the pool from October-April.

comfyshoes2022 · 05/01/2025 16:26

Yes, and it’s not like this in other countries.

If these businesses fail to provide very basic comfort for customers, I imagine they won't be around for long.

I don’t disagree that it’s probably a false economy, but a lot of these places have been around for a while but can’t put up their prices enough to compensate for the rise in energy costs. So their fixed costs have risen at a greater rate than price tolerance from the customers - it’s a rock and a hard place for small businesses who were already on tight margins. It’s a shame that it’ll probably put a lot of previously successful businesses to the wall, if you also add in all the other rises they’ve had to absorb in the last few years.

I find most places too hot this time of year. Because I walk or get public transport everywhere I dress for the outdoor temperature.

So you sitting eating a meal or having a drink wearing your coat and gloves? Because I do not.

MerryMaker · 05/01/2025 16:32

We have been out for breakfast. The cafe was warm. I will not go to places that are cold.

Needhelp101 · 05/01/2025 16:33

This is why I like Spoons. They are toasty warm in winter and cool in summer.

ueberlin2030 · 05/01/2025 16:36

There was a cafe in our small town which was always so cold that it wasn't advisable to take your coat off from approx Oct to Apr. It wasn't cheap either. I always hated when anyone suggested going there to meet up. The same place actually sold their indoors premises and now only has outdoor seating. Same rip off prices.

Crikeyalmighty · 05/01/2025 16:37

Just come back from Vienna- absolutely everywhere very toasty -outside wasminus3

Maybe other countries were not so daft as to privatise all their utilities and/or have strict price controls and are run 'not for profit'because to be frank we are getting the energy sources from the same end sources most of the time - same was true when we lived in Copenhagen

Crikeyalmighty · 05/01/2025 16:39

@HauntedBungalow I agree on that too -

Crikeyalmighty · 05/01/2025 16:46

@devilspawn good for you - I go to the same cafe all the time because it's very much a lovely independent, he knows all his regulars names and it's warm or cool as needed

squashyhat · 05/01/2025 16:47

What infuriates me is shops with doors wide open in winter. It's bad enough in shopping centres which are hardly warm anyway, but on the high street it's just criminal.

LuckySantangelo35 · 05/01/2025 16:48

I would never go back to a pub or restaurant or cafe if it was cold. They would lose my custom. End of.

Challenger2A7 · 05/01/2025 16:51

There are several newly-opened cafés in my cold area of northern England. Talking to the new owners, not one of them seems to have factored in the heating costs. One is beautifully and very expensively decorated, it's a work of art in itself. The food is good, but it's so freezing cold that customers have stopped going in. The owner didn't seem to understand this when I pointed it out to him.

garlictwist · 05/01/2025 16:58

We went to the cinema this afternoon. Waded through deep snow to get there. And they had the air con on!

nex18 · 05/01/2025 16:59

I have thought exactly that in the last couple of weeks. You didn’t used to see people sat in their anoraks in city centre bars a few years ago. I went out last night and the taxi went the opposite way round the one way system so dropped us off outside a different bar to where we had planned. It was lovely and toasty in there so we stayed for 3 drinks! I think we’ll aim there next time.

The one in my local town is well known for being bloody freezing.

Highest energy prices in Europe

cardibach · 05/01/2025 17:02

I really feel the cold and I haven’t noticed this anywhere except churches… (in them for rehearsal purposes, not worship).
