The weather's gone to shit (watching Britain's extreme weather 2024)
The country/government has gone to shit
I'm just getting older and wrinklier!!
Like I know most people feel a bit doom and gloom 1st week in January with all the festivities being over, everyone's gained a few pounds they didn't want and spent too many. But things just seem a bit bleak don't they?

YANBU. Climate crisis, wars, Putin, Trump, AI threat… then closer to home there’s the cost of living, crumbling NHS, social care and MH crises, fucked job market (in my industry at least)… struggling to think of anything positive other than small things on a day-to-day level. It’s fooking grim and I miss the 90s!

SoManyTeeth · 04/01/2025 22:14

GTA 6 might be coming out, though.

Derogations · 04/01/2025 22:15

yeah, feeling this

Gowlett · 04/01/2025 22:16

I don’t think about any of it, TBH.

Just trying to run my little corner…

Puppydog83 · 04/01/2025 22:19

Working in retail seeing how much people have spent and are spending I imagine a lot of them are gonna have a not very nice paying it all off.. This week has been horrendous, worse than before Christmas and they say there's a cost of living crisis.. I don't think there is for many people or they will be in debt and miserable for the next 12 months

broccolienthusiast · 04/01/2025 22:20

The Cure will be going on tour🤗

Absolutely, scary thought what today's children are facing!

I’m focusing on trips away, gigs and festivals to book, social stuff generally. I can’t solve all the problems of the world. I’m 50 and getting saggier by the day so I will take my mind off it by partying with all the other aging 90s kids for as long as I can.

username299 · 04/01/2025 22:22

I'm just taking it one step at a time. Currently sorting out the house.

Jingleballs2 · 04/01/2025 22:25

Been ill with something all week and only just stopped coughing up a lung. I HATE winter, horrible weather always dark and ill half the time.

Onelce the nicer weather comes back I will be fine though. I'm going to book a holiday soon to cheer me up. Plenty to look forward to in 2025, just not get 🤒🥶

Zanatdy · 04/01/2025 22:28

All doom and gloom for me as my close friend was diagnosed with terminal lung cancer on New year’s day. Normally I do feel gloomy this time of year, but this is just awful. Total shock, symptoms blamed on menopause.

Now that’s just cheered me up!

OurDreamLife · 04/01/2025 22:34

We have a family holiday early summer.
Other than that there’s nothing to really look forward to.

I’ve just signed up for alerts! One of my dreams to see them 🖤

naynayisay · 04/01/2025 22:40

The more I think about it, the more despair and hopelessness I feel. I can't personally influence anything or prevent anything so all I can hope for is some sense of peace and happiness in my own life.

I've taken to learning my news entirely from Tiktok and Mumsnet. I don't read the newspapers and I don't watch the tv news. If something seems interesting or important I'll research it further via a variety of sources but those stories are few and far between.

Searchingforthelight · 04/01/2025 22:41

Focussing on the things we have control over rather than bigger picture/ state of the world

So for me, I'm looking forward to plenty in 2025:

Have trial of ADHD meds for my youngest, fingers crossed it helps, cos we NEED help!

At last see if Joe Goldberg gets caught out when last season of YOU comes out

Get to a lovely healthy weight thanks to miracle medication Mounjaro

Not looking forward to: getting trampled at Oasis gig

Dillythedallyduck · 04/01/2025 23:00

I think it's all about your mindset though quite often. Yes it's a difficult global climate right now but then it has been many, many times in the past. It's nothing new.
For me I try to set aside the things that I have no control over and get excited for the lovely things I can bring into my life.
I start a new job on Monday, I'm booking a holiday, my chronic health condition is under control after 2 years of arguing with the GP, my dc are happy at secondary school and I have a wonderful group of friends that I enjoy spending time with.

HappyMamma2023 · 04/01/2025 23:14

I think 2025 will be a hard year, but my way to manage it is to live day by day and not look too far ahead.
My Dad is on EOL we don't know how much time he has left, but we had a special family Christmas.
And I'm balancing working FT with a degree apprenticeship and going into the final year. The coursework seems overwhelming. But I'm trying not to think too much about it and avoid the news. I'm appreciating the small things, like we had a nice family trip out to the park today taking our little boy on the swings and the slide and cosy nights in with my husband.

I can't wait! The album is brilliant and I saw them a few years ago and it was fantastic.

WilfredsPies · 04/01/2025 23:23

If you keep thinking of the negatives and all the horrible things going on in the world, you’ll fall into a pit of depression that there’s no escaping from.

I have a roof over my head, I’m warm, I have food in the cupboard. I’m in love with my DH and he is in love with me. We have children around us who are our world and make us incredibly happy. His parents and my DM are still alive and in ok health. We have three lovely holidays planned and some really exciting day trips that have already been saved and budgeted for. We’ve got a family wedding this summer which is just up the road and isn’t going to need me to spend huge amounts of cash or do ridiculous things. I spent yesterday morning working away to the sound of a wood pigeon that sounded exactly like a cuckoo, which made me think of spring, the feel of the sun warming my back without it being too hot and evening picnics on the beach. There is so much to be happy about.

Yes, I’m getting older and wrinklier, but on the plus side, I’m getting older and wrinklier, and I’m bloody lucky because I know there are people who would do anything to be in my position.

PickleBranst · 04/01/2025 23:26

Yanbu. The government seem very pessimistic too. Its like they've given up and scared of Musk.

Idontpostmuch · 23/01/2025 11:24

YANBU but dwelling on it won't help. We each just have to do what we can. Trump's denial of climate crisis sends chills through me and it would be easy to give up. Nevertheless I continue to do what I can, wearing warm clothes rather than having heating on a lot, holidays by train rather than plane, journeys by bike, which I like better than car in any case. The NHS is indeed a worry, but remember things can't change overnight and the current government's still in first year. Focus on the things in our country that are good. As capital cities go, London is less bad for pickpockets than Rome, Paris or Barcelona. In the UK we can buy cheap paracetamol unlike in US where they have to buy Tylenol. Also cheap anti diarrhoea medicines. Sun screen is affordable unlike in much of Europe. Some posters gave mentioned grey dismal weather. Well the weather doesn't care about us so there's not much point caring about it. Best thing to do is go outside regardless and enjoy it whatever the weather. Even on a dull day we get more of the right kind of light for mood boosting. Fix the things we can fix and ignore the rest.

Bonbon3333 · 19/02/2025 18:12

UKs gone to shit, made homelesss because our freeholder doesn’t want to fix our roof so water pouring in to our flat, went to council for help, rather than helping when we’d been displaced from our home they decided to try and charge me council tax for the home I’ve been displaced from and for temp emergency accommodation where council tax is already being paid. Kids in their exam year. Meanwhile Starmer accepts £20,000 flat as his son needs somewhere to study during his GCSE’s because apparently there’s no spare rooms at 10 Downing Street while journalists are there. What about my kids, why is there no help for our family? One rule for them, zero help for citizens of this country when they desperately need it. They just look to screw you for every penny they can.
