Removing shoes

Am I the arsehole for asking people to remove their shoes?

Since we bought our house in 2017 we have never allowed shoes upstairs or in the front room. In the front room we have a huge shaggy rug and the stairs and upstairs are carpeted.

Our front door opens in to the dining room which is wood floor and I had no issue with people being in their with shoes on. Fast forward to now, I have a 1 year old who picks up absolutely anything in sight, the last thing being a piece of dog shite. So now shoes are completely banned in my home and my god has this caused upset amongst folk!

We have ample space to remove and store shoes and a bench to sit down to do so.

I'm not posh or pretentious in any way but is it really such a huge deal to respect our house

Im prepared for a proper mums net roasting also

Yes !!! always ! You never know what people tread in ! Emetophobic here and I dread sick being trod in !
Mil if ever she wants to piss me off she " forgets " to take her shoes off and prances over the rug saying " oh I've forgotten to take my shoes off " I ignored her the last time she didn't get a reaction so stopped doing it !

What if their feet are bare in shoes (summer shoes or sandals)? I often wonder what happens then, when I read these threads.

Edited as I misspelled feet 🤣

Older people are encouraged to wear decent shoes as it reduces falls. I wouldn’t ask an older person to remove shoes. Sounds dramatic but I don’t want them to fall, break a hip and die just because I’m precious about my carpets. I have a carpet shampooer.

Edited

What do you think older people do in the many, many countries where footwear isn’t worn in the home?

I have spinal injury and partial paralysis and I still take my shoes off and I’m unstable 🤷🏻‍♀️ it’s healthy to have bare or slippered feet sometimes.

Hyperquiet · 01/01/2025 23:10

Cleanliness is really important in my culture and we have strictly no shoes on in the house apart from the hallway.

I don't understand it at all but my floors are there to be walked on, and then I clean them as needed. I would never ask someone to remove shoes.

I usually ask/offer if someone has light carpets, not if they have hard floors.

If I'm muddy I remove them anyway.

Yes i understand that. It's not so much about shoes being mucky. It's more about my little one now on the move and picking up everything. Mostly the dog poop issue

I always take my shoes off when entering someone’s home . Absolutely embarrassing if you create dirt on their carpet. Cannot understand the mentality of people who think that is ok !

I have socks and slippers. I even have those little fabric things you see in shoe shops when trying on shoes!

Lots of homes are shoes off these days

Mine has been for years now for guests

My home and my parents has always been a shoes off home for us as a family as soon as we walk through the door

Donewiththisshit · 01/01/2025 23:15

If there is a party or gathering I expect to keep shoes on, it ruins well planned outfits to take them off. Non carpeted floors I have no problem with shoes, however we had a visitor to our house tred dog shit all over a very expensive brand new white carpet. I wasn’t happy about that and think it’s disrespectful to wear dirty outdoor shoes on carpet.

KittenPause · 01/01/2025 23:16

I even have separate outdoor slip ons I change into to take the bins out and for gardening

May09Bump · 01/01/2025 23:17

PortiaWithNoBreaks · 01/01/2025 23:04

Get some slippers for regular guests and shoe covers off Amazon for the others so they can have a choice.

This is a good idea.

We don't have shoes on in the house and we / the children remove them in other peoples houses as soon as we enter.

Kisskiss · 01/01/2025 23:17

Viviennemary · 01/01/2025 22:59

Yes it's really rude and a bit lower class.

To wear shoes indoors? To impose your dirty outdoor shoe dirt on someone’s house? Definitely!

Your my type of person as I do too

Can’t people who visit often (like your dad) bring slippers or have slippers there?

it’s caused massive problems? Really? People are used to no shoes surely?

Maybe you need to heat / insulate your house better?

Yes it's caused problems already hence my post. This isn't an over night decision. This is something we have put in place recently and had visitors visit more than once who know the rule

Yes I have spare socks and slippers as explained above

Yes I will get my dad some of his own as explained above

Yes I will install under floor heating immediately. Its a wooden floor!!

Always raises a lot of issues. I think shoes off is filthy, you think shoes on is filthy. We would not normally come into contact.
If I came to your shoes off house I would not come in, if you came to my shoes on house you would be welcome, but not if you took your shoes off.

Pantotime · 01/01/2025 23:24

Well I’m 55+, warmly welcome visiting dogs, have a no-shoe rule in my home and always remove mine in other people’s houses. Imo it’s a mark of respect. I’ve only ever encountered two idiots (my in-laws) who thoughtlessly didn’t follow suit.

If anyone refuses to remove their shoes then they don’t come in my house ! It’s that simple. Shoes off, or shoe covers on!

50Balesofgrey · 01/01/2025 23:28

Because feet are gross

Shoes covers. I never thought of those! We had our alarm mended not too long ago and the guy wore those right away without me even asking. I'm going to buy some

I’ve only seen the guidance we give in the hospital which is based on statistics. I’ve noT done a full study re falls and outcomes in older people in countries where shoes are removed in the house but if bare foot was better, according to UK studies, then that would be the advice 🤷🏻‍♀️

I can’t imagine anything more uninviting than being a guest and being asked to put on shoe covers. Pretty standard for workmen but not family 😂
