Fireworks - why are they still a thing?

Sorry to be a party pooper - but!

Surely they are horrendous for the environment?

Surely there are more environmentally-friendly options to replace them?

They're awful for pets, cost a flipping fortune etc etc. god knows how much the London NY show costs for example....

Not a party pooper by any stretch but I see people calling out things bad for the environment/COL all the time and yet this....

Anyway I'll go back to my scrooge self now 😅

Ah. I see a similar thread. Clearly I'm not the only one!

Because they are such an amazing sensory experience that leaves you buzzing and in awe.

pinkdelight · 01/01/2025 00:40

Surely there are more environmentally-friendly options to replace them?

Such as what? CGI fireworks? VR ones? I'm no fireworks nut but humans have liked a bit of whizz bang ooh aaah for aeons and it'll probably go on until there is some genuine as good/better replacement or we're wiped out.

Because they’re incredible and only happen a couple of times a year.

NewMum3000 · 01/01/2025 00:42

You are 100% a party pooper 🤣

Whatisgoingonheredear · 01/01/2025 00:43

My husband and I say that in the current day and age, letting off fireworks in your back garden is an indicator that you're low IQ. That might be mean, but I don't care. Gawping at one rocket being let off every 20 minutes whilst upsetting neighbours and animals is a shit thing to do.

A house near us started at 8pm and has only just stopped. Literally one very very loud bang every 20 minutes. Has woken the kids up twice plus the dog. Fuck off.

Happy new year to everyone, except back garden fireworkers.

Whatisgoingonheredear · 01/01/2025 00:44

Regarding replacements, a lot of countries are adopting drone shows instead.

I don't have an issue with organised displays but I do have an issue with people letting them off at home especially if they've been drinking.

They're still going off ffs.

Moglet4 · 01/01/2025 00:41

Fuck me, you should move to Dagenham! 🤣

For some weird reason they're almost every night. You can hear them in the distance and they always start around 1am!

Someone said there might be a wedding venue or something but it's still a mystery in the local Facebook group.

Kpo58 · 01/01/2025 00:46

I don't have an issue with firework displays, but don't like it when people let them off in their own garden. I would also prefer it if they were quieter as they seem to have become so noisy in the last few years. Small bangs with a larger one for the finale fine, but now so many people need to wear ear defenders at displays because they are too loud.

Caroparo52 · 01/01/2025 00:47

Saw the celebration drone light show for King's Coronation. A million times better than fireworks and environmentally friendly. Why persist with bangy things in this enlightened day and age?

Wendysfriend · 01/01/2025 00:49

Absolutely love fireworks, such a good feeling after watching them. The best fireworks we ever seen were at Disney, omg they were unreal, we were smiling for days. There was a terrific display where I live tonight, lasted half an hour and the colours and shapes were brilliant,

Rubyupbeat · 01/01/2025 00:51

@Moglet4 unless you live where I do. A new events centre has been built nearby, we have fireworks most weekends and as for fireworks night and Diwali, well those fireworks go on for well over a month.
I hate fireworks now, never used to.

Collette78 · 01/01/2025 00:54

Argh I know … but I’m moaning because they are keeping me awake and I only have a 5 hour window to get some sleep if I’m lucky between working!

I like them at organised events but everyone letting them off in their gardens for an hour… noooooo.

BigSilly · 01/01/2025 00:57

So because you don't like them, you wonder why they are still 'a thing'?

aldisud · 01/01/2025 00:58

I love fireworks. Ban cars. They are far more of a problem.

You should try some with the kids. They would love it!

MushMonster · 01/01/2025 01:01

I do not agree with private fireworks, anyway. Due to safety concerns.
I think drones will eventually replace fireworks. The new animations they tried this year in London look great, but not sure you will see them properly from all angles.
Drones can be re-used yearly, shared amonst events, less dangerous.
I will miss fireworks. I do love them, but I agree they are an environmental concern.

ShaneFulorgy · 01/01/2025 01:02

Yeah, fuck wildlife, let's enjoy bangs and lights in the sky like the selfish cunts we humans are! Wooooooo!

They are not in any way incredible, unfortunately, and happen all year round

daffodilandtulip · 01/01/2025 01:04

I don't mind a proper display but it's beyond me why we think it's ok to sell explosives in supermarkets for people to use in their back yard.

They've been going off since lunchtime here today - and most days since about august.

Tend to agree with your husband. There's a certain profile that seems to go for this but I'll get flamed for that no doubt!

I've loved watching them from the window with my children. It's only a couple of times a year

AppleKatie · 01/01/2025 01:05

I love watching them too and have on occasion had backyard displays.

i am not in the demographic being charmingly alluded to upthread just for the judgy record 🤣

What a kind person you are! Dogs hearing is far superior to humans and is likely to make them more distressed. You enjoy an animal being distressed?
