Fireworks - why are they still a thing?

Sorry to be a party pooper - but!

Surely they are horrendous for the environment?

Surely there are more environmentally-friendly options to replace them?

They're awful for pets, cost a flipping fortune etc etc. god knows how much the London NY show costs for example....

Not a party pooper by any stretch but I see people calling out things bad for the environment/COL all the time and yet this....

Anyway I'll go back to my scrooge self now 😅

I like them, but I don't think they should be available to the general public and I suspect they could make them less explosive, as many of those at public displays are more of a 'whoosh' rather than a long 'bang'. 💥

hattie43 · 01/01/2025 07:43

They should be banned for private sale and only available on the appropriate night to formal public display's .

Whatisgoingonheredear · 01/01/2025 08:13

You should try some with the kids. They would love it!

DH has taken DD to an organised display on a couple of occasions which she has enjoyed. They go on for circa 10/15 minutes and not hours, even days, on end like at home. When she was smaller she was scared of the bangs. As for them being let off at home, she (a 5 year old) recognises that they are disruptive, stop people enjoying the peace of thejr home (especially if you have to blast music to mask the sound for dogs), scare animals, stop everyone living their normal lives when they have to try and manage things for their pets for evenings on end. We live near several farms who lost livestock because of eating firework debris and dying.
It is a real shame that a 5 hear old recognises all of this but many grown adults do not. Just for their 3 seconds of "wow.....Jim go light another one". Selfish.

No, loud bangy shite such as backfiring cars by knobheads and fireworks can go.

All hail 2025 the year of not scaring dogs and cats shitless and killing flocks of birds for 30 seconds of lights and banging.

My friend’s horse was killed a couple of years ago. He’d tried to jump out of his field and had got stuck and died of a heart attack.

MeanderingGently · 01/01/2025 08:47

Fireworks are bloody marvellous, I stayed up specially last night to see the London ones on TV. In previous years (and younger days) I've travelled to London to see them in person. Loads of countries celebrate New Year with fireworks, from China to Iceland, Dubai to Paris.... Wonderful!
As a child, fireworks in our garden on bonfire and New Year were the highlight of my childhood, wouldn't have them banned for the world.
When there is so much wrong with the world and so much worse to moan about, give fireworks a bit of a break!

SallyWD · 01/01/2025 09:01

I actually love them and find them thrilling but I feel there should be limits. Where I live, we had fireworks every night from before Halloween to mid November. It was too much. It didn't used to be like this when I was a child.

Nogaxeh · 01/01/2025 09:08

Fireworks are amazing.
But it's possible that drone displays will take over to an extent - no explosion risk to worry about, and can do more intricate patterns.
Would that be more environmentally friendly? I don't know.

My husband and I say that in the current day and age, letting off fireworks in your back garden is an indicator that you're low IQ. That might be mean, but I don't care. Gawping at one rocket being let off every 20 minutes whilst upsetting neighbours and animals is a shit thing to do.

A house near us started at 8pm and has only just stopped. Literally one very very loud bang every 20 minutes. Has woken the kids up twice plus the dog. Fuck off.

Happy new year to everyone, except back garden fireworkers.

Sorry but I agree with this too 😂

We had people letting them off when it was still light - how stupid is that, you cant even see them- they may as well have just lit their money and waved it around like a sparkler

Freysimo · 01/01/2025 09:17

Flutterpony · 01/01/2025 02:48

Because there is nothing (imo) as spectacular as a good Firework display. For me, fireworks are up there with a visit to a butterfly house, or a room full of My Little Pony. So much prettiness.

In my opinion dogs are worse for the environment, and I loathe the mess irresponsible owners leave, so if it was between voting to get rid of fireworks or dogs, I’d vote to make dogs illegal.

It's not just dogs who get scared, many neuro diverse people do as well. But as long as you're happy............

I'd agree in many cases with the IQ indicator comment especially considering the winds last night.

Bloody idiots. We are getting a puppy in a few weeks and I'm dreading NYE going forward ...

I like displays on the TV but that’s it. I’m
not fussed about wildlife as cars and planes and even cats do far more damage in a year than fireworks ever will but the offended don’t seem to care about that so much as it serves them a purpose

Mahoosivesalad · 01/01/2025 09:52

I think they should be for organised displays only. I have a neighbour whose garden meets mine, except their garden is 100ft long and mine runs along sideways and is very narrow so my property and bedroom is only 14ft from the hedge that seperates us.

It's these neighbours who practically live in their garden all year round. Bonfires most nights and fireworks let off approx 30-40ft from my house every bonfire night and new years. They seem to buy the biggest ones they can find.

I literally lie in bed waiting for it to be over with my room shaking from the massive booms and hearing their rockets thudding into my roof. I find the spent ones in my plant pots, on my patio, sliding off my roof etc Utter idiots.

Shouldigoforarunorhavepancakes · 01/01/2025 09:53

I find displays boring.
I understand the fuss about them if you never saw fireworks before but saw them once saw them all.

if you add to that how bad they are for birds, pets, etc, then I simply cannot bother to watch.

I’m a member of Mensa and set off fireworks in my back garden once or twice a year. In fact bonfire night is my favourite night of the year. So there goes that theory.

Somebody should let Mensa know so that they can revoke your membership 😂 because it IS a certain demographic that let's fireworks off in their garden.

Rummly · 01/01/2025 10:02

Noise isn’t a bad thing. I mean, dogs barking not just a few times a year but every fucking day is great, right? And wildlife can live with occasional noise. After all, millions of wild animals put up with being slaughtered and maimed by pets every year. 🙄

LlynTegid · 01/01/2025 10:03

I am someone who thinks it should be organised displays only and designated days. You can plan to avoid them if that were the case.

There are ND people who are scared of dogs, if we're going down that road.

Treaclewell · 01/01/2025 10:06

It has puzzled me that some of us are apparently hard wired to enjoy them, and fires, and others are just left cold. In nature nothing except wildfire and volcanoes looks like them. and the sensible evolutionary response is not to say "Ooo how pretty" but to run like the blazes. But here we are. Enough of us watched and said Ooo and escaped to pass our genes on. The rest of you will have to outbreed us to stop them.

Read Bilbo describing Gandalf's fireworks to get the flavour of their appeal.

I agree about the bangs. Nobody's mentioned the effect on the ex-military who've been in combat, and for whom they can lead to recurrence of PTSD. A friend of a friend loathed them.

It’ll be to signal drugs are available.

😂😂😂
Dealers sent texts now, they have menus, whatsapp, and payment options. They deliver at home within 30 mins. They need no smoke signals to let users know what's on.

WorriedRelative · 01/01/2025 10:09

I don't think they should be sold to the public, but have no issue with professional displays.

Few people have the space or skills/sense to use fireworks safely and they are very dangerous. They are harmful to animals (not just house pets), harmful to the environment and create litter.

DH has been collecting fireworks debris from our garden this morning. We didn't have fireworks and neither did our next door neighbours.

Possibly the most depressing thread I've ever read on here. I knew there were cunts out there, but...

Which people are you calling cunts? Pro or anti firework?

ShaneFulorgy · 01/01/2025 01:02

Yeah, fuck wildlife, let's enjoy bangs and lights in the sky like the selfish cunts we humans are! Wooooooo!

Are you ok?

Oh dear. You’re not as intelligent as you think and you’re no dog-lover. Knowing what you know about fireworks you are still going to get a puppy. Not a rescue dog, not an older dog being rehomed but a puppy. This is an animal created deliberately due to demand from people like you who use these animals for entertainment and to meet their emotional needs.

You’re happy for an animal to be created that may find fireworks traumatic because it benefits you. Clearly, your comfort comes before the dog’s comfort. You need to recognise your own role in any trauma your puppy experiences before you start blaming others.
