Fireworks - why are they still a thing?

Sorry to be a party pooper - but!

Surely they are horrendous for the environment?

Surely there are more environmentally-friendly options to replace them?

They're awful for pets, cost a flipping fortune etc etc. god knows how much the London NY show costs for example....

Not a party pooper by any stretch but I see people calling out things bad for the environment/COL all the time and yet this....

Anyway I'll go back to my scrooge self now 😅

Fuck me, you should move to Dagenham! 🤣

For some weird reason they're almost every night. You can hear them in the distance and they always start around 1am!

Someone said there might be a wedding venue or something but it's still a mystery in the local Facebook group.

It’ll be to signal drugs are available.

Because they’re incredible and only happen a couple of times a year.

Not where I live! They start mid way through November and go on until end of November. Christmas Eve, Christmas Day night and last night. Now tonight from 7pm and still odd one’s going now. I’m honestly waiting for one of my dogs to just die with fear. Local dog did die last year. Had a heart attack and collapsed. But hey! People love them 😡

Seems quite an expensive way to me for dealers to announce that the supply has arrived, when they could just send a text message?

GreenTeaLikesMe · 01/01/2025 01:11

Organized displays a few times a year are wonderful.

I'd be fine with getting rid of "other" fireworks and requiring all fireworks to be sold via registered channels and ONLY a few times a year (NYE, Diwali, Bonfire night and maybe one more).

Costacoffeeplease · 01/01/2025 01:13

Just ridiculous now, absolutely no need to terrify people and animals when alternatives are available

Fireworks are one of the things that will be looked back on in disgust

AquaPeer · 01/01/2025 01:15

They’re exciting and sensory and look incredible.

Tend to agree with your husband. There's a certain profile that seems to go for this but I'll get flamed for that no doubt!

Snobs. Now why are they still a thing?

Ilovemysaltycrumpets · 01/01/2025 01:37

I hate them after rehabbing lots of wildlife affected by them.

ForMintUser · 01/01/2025 01:47

Is no one allowed to enjoy anything anymore? If they bring people joy then bring it on I say - the world has worse problems and people could use some fun just now.

SugarPlumpFairyCakes · 01/01/2025 02:06

I have never enjoyed fireworks. Loud and clumsy.

Drones however create excellent sfx.

Time to move on and progress. There is no need for massive noise and the visuals are far better with other means.

aldisud · 01/01/2025 00:58

I love fireworks. Ban cars. They are far more of a problem.

Great idea. I'll jump on my firework in the morning to get me to work 🙄

TrixieFatell · 01/01/2025 02:11

I do like fireworks but where I live they aren't too much of a problem, only really happen at certain times of the year and I have a cat and dog that are completely unbothered about them. I do think there should be a noise limit, on year a house nearby had the loudest fireworks ever, set off car alarms!! That was too much.

Someone above mentioned Disney. I loved the fireworks and the drone show. Both really good for different reasons.

Guavafish1 · 01/01/2025 02:12

I love fireworks

ShesNotACowShesAFox · 01/01/2025 02:15

I’d happily outlaw the fuckers.

Are they even that interesting? Colours in the sky, wows that’s fun for about 10 seconds (if you’re a bit of a simpleton 🙊)

I hate them. They’re too loud, they’re unsociable, for some reason the public can buy them (meaning the local scumbags buy them to set off at 11pm for 14 nights in a row) and they give animals heart attacks. The negatives far outweigh the one benefit which is “they’re kind of nice to look at if colours are your thing”

A rocket is far cheaper than a text message innit!

Because they are such an amazing sensory experience that leaves you buzzing and in awe.

They also seriously fuck with wildlife, and that is not ok for a few seconds of pathetic human awe at some bright lights. Try reading some poetry or listening to Schubert if you want an amazing sensory experience.

Hahaha. I also can just see a load of coke-hungry people wandering around saying “Where was that?? Did you see where it was set off? Was it the green? Or the oval? Does ANYBODY know?!”

Personally I think saying fireworks is an amazing sensory experience is like saying being run over by a car is a great massage experience.

I've loved watching them from the window with my children. It's only a couple of times a year

And every couple of times a year, animals die or are deeply distressed. Tell the kids.

Omg that was defo in acacia crescent, the coke will be plentiful there but there was a red rocket in the high street, it could be crack?

OppsUpsSide · 01/01/2025 02:22

I like them. They don’t do wildlife any favours but wildlife isn’t such an etherial beast it’s going to be done in by a few fireworks. Air miles are much more harmful, planes are so common 😉

Are you really so unaware of the harm to animals and wildlife caused by fireworks, and about five minutes of supposed human 'fun'? Yes, it's a small example of how humans are fucking the planet.

OppsUpsSide · 01/01/2025 02:25

Listening to Schubert can also be as much of an amazing sensory experience as being run over by a car is a massage experience, for people that 😮don’t like Schubert.

OppsUpsSide · 01/01/2025 02:26

A bit of poetry will see them right
