Turps solution

Hi all,

DH was decorating our boy’s new room as Baby #2 is due and he is still in the nursery. I didn’t paint or touch the turpentine solution but he used some to get paint out of the carpet and the whole upstairs (apart from our son’s room) stinks of it. We opened windows and our own room balcony door during the night hut the smell lingers a bit.

I’m currently 26 weeks pregnant and worried about smelling the turpentine solution and if it will harm baby? As I said, I wasn’t on the room or handled the turpentine but just the lingering smell. DH feels so annoyed and upset with himself too.

Any advice?

Open windows
You will be absolutely fine

If it's genuine turpentine (most these days will be a safer substitute) then the MSDS I can find online doesn't have any specific warnings or precautions for either pregnant women or the unborn. Keep the windows open and the area ventilated.

Turps (and turps substitute) is one of those things where the very smallest amount can fill a whole house with the smell, and it's a memory-smell that you're convinced you can smell for a long time after.

You’ll be absolutely fine, no need to worry. It does really linger, though, doesn’t it. If you have any bicarbonate of soda in the house, sprinkle that on the carpet. It’ll really help to neutralise the odour.
