Zero sympathy for people who had £10 million worth of jewellery stolen

People are struggling to heat their homes, feed their kids and pay their rent - whilst this 'millionaire influencer' has £10 million worth of jewellery stashed in a safe at home - I find this morally abhorrent and have zero sympathy. They have so little insight and social conscience that they feel it appropriate to flash jewellery and other signs of huge wealth all over social media. I'm glad no-one was injured obviously but hope the stolen jewellery is used to re-distribute some of their enormous wealth.

I've missed the case that the OP mentions, but I hope that the thieves are as intelligent as this Fife duo:

Yeah, but all trauma isn't equally traumatic.

Just waiting for the 'politics of envy' to be mentioned

Getting robbed and someone invading your home sounds very traumatic to me.

Wheresthebeach · 31/12/2024 14:28

Thieving is bad...end of. You don't get to decide that someone is obnoxious and therefore deserves to have their home broken into and their stuff taken. Supporting criminals isn't a good thing. Are 'influencers' irritating...yes...but if people didn't follow them then they'd be irrelevant.

Katypp · 31/12/2024 14:29

I find this attitude unfathomable to be honest.
No sympathy for wealthy victims of crime, no sympathy for children who will have to leave their private schools, no sympathy for small business owners unable to carry on etc. You see it every day on here.
Yet the OP probably thinks this post shows she has a social conscience, when what she is really saying is that people wealthier than her are unimportant.
If she thinks this makes her sound a good person, it doesn't.

Whyherewego · 31/12/2024 14:30

I don't think the perp was Robin Hood ...

Katbum · 31/12/2024 14:32

It’s like that ridiculous Tamara Eccelstone documentary where she is in tears about her belongings being stolen from a multimillion pound residence. While anyone has a right to be upset at a burglary the whole
performance of it shows such a lack of awareness about what most of our lives are like. Limited empathy indeed!

If you think the proceeds of crime go to improving the lives of people living in poverty you’re beyond delusional. Whatever money comes from this crime is likely to fund more organised crime. Also your victim blaming is despicable.

Kendodd · 31/12/2024 14:33

YABU I have sympathy for any victim of crime.

But, I hope this case uses up no more police time than any poor person who's had their house broken into and stuff stolen. In fact the impact is likely to be greater on the poor person, who can't afford to lose/replace anything and so if anything they deserve more police time investigating crimes commited on them.

People should be allowed to spend their money as they see fit.

Socialism is evil.

Cattyisbatty · 31/12/2024 14:36

Have you ever been burgled and had valuable items/heirloom items stolen? Obviously not as you are so lacking in compassion for someone who has despite their vast wealth. No-one deserves to be burgled, it's a horrible thing to go through whatever gets taken, but worse when it's jewelry as it's so personal. Plus do you think the theives deserve it - probably using it as collaterol for the drugs trade or slave trade.
We live in a capitalist society and unless wealth has been accrued through ill-gotten gains people are entitled to be rich.

Brefugee · 31/12/2024 14:38

well, OP, unless you stole it and are going to fence it and give all proceeds to the poor and needy YABU

Never before has there been such an uneven distribution of wealth in this country. Kids are in poverty yet some ‘influencer’ has managed to snaffle £10m worth of jewellery. The mind boggles.

How do you know this person hasn’t given millions to local charities? People, are allowed to do whatever they want with their money and they don’t deserve to have it removed from them just because others are struggling.m and as I say, how do you know they’re not using a substantial portion of their earnings to help others less fortunate?

And what does that have to do with endorsing or not caring about crime?

SunnyAugust · 31/12/2024 14:42

But the £10m of jewellery hasn’t robbed people of heating.

Being robbed is horrible in any circumstance

Socialism is “evil”? That’s tantamount to saying equality and fairness is evil.

A street homeless girl I know ( now adult) owns a house worth about £700k by hard work alone.

It’s a humble home but it’s hers.

No one stole to get it.
One can work way out of poverty.

Waterweight · 31/12/2024 14:43

Your being unreasonable to not name the person you talking about - who had £10m in jewellery ?

Absolutely…my immediate thought was why would anyone have that regardless of flashing it or not

TheBluntTurtle · 31/12/2024 14:43

Who do you think robbed them - Robin Hood?!
stealing is still stealing whether it’s £1 from a poor person or £1m from a rich person. It’s still wrong. The distribution of wealth and inequality is a completely different matter.

Commonsense22 · 31/12/2024 14:44

I am not wealthy at all and if I had a million or 10 flying around I would not spend them on jewellery.
But all money spent helps the economy and supports society through tax and employment in different ways.

The papers are loving the story because of the big numbers but I haven't seen the victim parading themselves with self-pity. Just old pics of them wearing the jewellery.

It's a different world to most of ours but on our own scales, we all do things that seem outrageous to those with less.

MagentaRocks · 31/12/2024 14:44

I never understand this attitude. If you bought Christmas presents for your family is that morally abhorrent because some people don’t have money for that. If you go out for a meal is that morally abhorrent because some people struggle to buy food to eat at home, let alone in a restaurant. Different people have different amounts of money and it is up to them how they spend it. Of course those of us that can afford it should do our bit, donate to food banks etc but people shouldn’t have to take into account what other people have or don’t have.

Can you give me a figure I'd be allowed to get to wealth wise that's acceptable please? Just so I know for future reference.

Also very interested in the empathy cut off figure!
