I cannot believe that this lad is going to spend a year in prison- yes, I know that’s the law there, he should have known better etc, etc
I hope that the girl’s mother is ashamed of her actions.
I don’t want to think what the impact will be on Marcus 😥

I do think somehow we need to have warnings when people book holidays to certain countries. Maybe it’s something that can be automatically issued when you book a flight somewhere.

For those thinking he deserves this - I’m guessing you have no idea what goes on in a maximum security prison in Dubai. Especially for a black boy. I’m so worried for him. I wish our government would step in and do something.

TwistedWonder · 30/12/2024 15:59

itsgettingweird · 30/12/2024 15:56

Let’s be honest here, his biggest crime in the mothers eyes is that he’s guilty of being black.

That crossed my mind when we saw his picture today but then I also realised we have no idea of the ethnicity or religion of the woman and her mother? (Or has that been published?)

They’re Sikh - so I do honestly believe there’s a race and class angle to the mother’s decision.

tellmewhenthespaceshiplandscoz · 30/12/2024 15:59

Lovely** how would she have lacked capacity? And surely that would need to be proven?

x2boys · 30/12/2024 15:59

endofthelinefinally · 30/12/2024 15:56

Rape and torture is very common in Dubai prison. HIV is rife. A young black man would be at extremely high risk, given the racism that exists there. This isn't anything like a year in a UK prison, which would be bad enough.

Poor kid I hope,someone sees,sense and Pardons him .

I would be very careful if I were you. Comments like this could be read as an incitement to commit crime.

No one here knows what really happened. Maybe the girl’s mother had good reason to report the incident.

Exactly.

Regardless of whether anyone agrees with their laws or not, he broke the law and is serving a prison sentence.

Don't go to these countries and act like a westerner and expect them to tolerate it.

Anyway, he'll be out and on Love Island or some other ghastly reality Tv show as a result of his infamy.

”Locked up in Dubai” or whatever the name of the group assisting him has said the girl and her family are British-Indians.

It’s on their website.

ChristmasCardi · 30/12/2024 16:02

Someone said that during Ramadan some prisoners are pardoned from Dubai prisons, so let’s all hope this is the case here. In which case he ‘only’ has to survive until February.

This thread is fucking horrible. A young working class British man made a mistake on holiday and the no doubt well educated middle class MN posters here think he deserves a year in prison. Does he fuck. I wonder how many of you defending Dubai are saving yourselves a lot of tax by working their system? Morals and empathy soon go up in a cloud of smoke when you are tainted by the oil money eh? Think what you are defending for a moment? You are defending a young man for having consensual sex with a willing partner on holiday. Have none of you ever got carried away? made a teenage mistake?
The casual and callous cruelty shown on this thread makes me think very hard about how my black children would be treated if they made a mistake which hurt no one.

Indeed. Mumsnet threads (and the fact the posts are allowed to stand) are a constant reminder of how racist this country is. I hope the girl's name and that of her mother is revealed too. She should have controlled her own daughter, rather than ruin the life of a young man who is no guiltier of a crime than her daughter is.

She is Asian.

He had sex with an underage girl, which is usually called rape.

Edited

There is a famous family with 22 children who did exactly that in the UK and never got punished.

And you must watch too much US TV.

Abhannmor · 30/12/2024 16:04

Luckily he seems like a sensible and grounded young lad. Let's hope he gets time off. Or perhaps Sheikh Maktoum will intervene.

itsgettingweird · 30/12/2024 16:04

Thanks JHound

Reading on from me quoting that I saw it answered and I see others have still questioned a race and class angle.

tellmewhenthespaceshiplandscoz · 30/12/2024 16:05

For me, my anger and I think I speak for a few others on this thread isn't so much the sentence (although is a bit).

It's that the mother would wait until home then lodge a complaint. Why? What was she hoping to achieve? Her daughter was almost 18 so to compare it to the UK, it's like my DD being a few months off the age of consent with her boyfriend being exactly that age. Unless it was rape nothing would come of it in the UK.

She made the complaint knowing full well what would happen to this young man and knowing full well she would be playing a major part j changing his life forever.

All because her daughter had sex with him, and as far as we know, willingly.

I couldn't sleep at night if I was her.

I agree on both points.

I went to Dubai when I was 16, and again at 18 and I don’t think I spent much (if any) time reading about the laws although I knew it was a very strict misogynistic country. A year in prison in this case is totally disproportionate to the so-called crime and anyone who thinks this is justified needs their heads examined.

There absolutely seems to be a racial undercurrent to this and I really hope the government intervenes.

Reetpetitenot · 30/12/2024 16:05

nogginatemycat · 30/12/2024 14:05

So they were not the same age, and it was against the law. If your baneed from driving for 12 months should you be able to drive after 8 months?

The girl also broke the law in Dubai. Yet her mother didn't report her, and waited until she was back in the UK to report the boy. The girl's mother is a nasty, vindictive, racist bitch.

I am very sorry for the young man, but surely everybody knows that the law in many part of the middle east is very different to here?

I mean it’s not massively different - just a different age of consent which is the same everywhere. But it was only the maliciousness of the mother that made this an issue.

Fairyliz · 30/12/2024 16:06

Sinkintotheswamp · 30/12/2024 15:36

Exactly Del >> " I would love their tourist industry to take a hit."

The problem is that all the people I know who holiday in the hellhole of Dubai, aren't very educated and won't know this has happened.

Sounds like Marcus’ family then. Surely you would tell your teenage son not to have sex on holiday in Dubai; it’s not unknown that they have dodgy laws around this sort of thing.

Toadstool101 · 30/12/2024 13:21

This is such an upsetting case. It’s really really got me. It reminds me of America’s lynching of young black men who dared show or reciprocate interest from a white woman. Before anyone jumps on - I am not suggesting it has any of the violence of this.

I wish we could name and shame the vindictive woman. She’s the only one to have committed a crime in destroying this boy’s life. His poor parents, I cannot even imagine.

No, I know exactly what you mean. Many non-Black POC hold racist views against Black people and idealize White people, including Arabs, and I can say that with knowledge because I am Arab. Would the mother have done this if it was a wealthy White 18 year old boy?

Doubt.

MyLadyGreensleeves · 30/12/2024 16:07

TwistedWonder · 30/12/2024 14:31

Seeing as Mr Lammy thinks a man can grow a cervix, we could be waiting quite some time to hear anything sensible from out of his mouth.

Quite, although there are hopes, albeit faint, that he might contact the people who can grow a cervix in a man and ask if they can grow him a brain.

Although who knows which would be the more difficult task.

JHound · 30/12/2024 16:07

Ihavenoclu · 30/12/2024 16:03

She is Asian.

”Asian” is a very wide category though. To be very specific they are British-Indian

ohdelay · 30/12/2024 16:09

TizerorFizz · 30/12/2024 15:28

@ohdelay The DD broke the law too!

Everyone is forgetting she was 17. That’s also under age. The mother waited until her DD was 18 before saying anything, I understand. She’s a piece of work!

She would be considered the victim. The same way a child who has been abused isn't a paedo. They consider under 18 a child. In practice it's a shithole with actual indentured slavery going on and many migrants being abused daily, but that's their law. Don't go there on holiday.

NewGreenDuck · 30/12/2024 16:09

Reetpetitenot · 30/12/2024 16:05

Again. She did not break the law. He broke the law by having sex with a minor.
If people don't understand that, then I despair.
