I cannot believe that this lad is going to spend a year in prison- yes, I know that’s the law there, he should have known better etc, etc
I hope that the girl’s mother is ashamed of her actions.
I don’t want to think what the impact will be on Marcus 😥

Nonbinary

We are talking about two young people who were months apart in age.

This wasn't rape and it's disrespectful to rape victims (non consensual sex) to compare.

endofthelinefinally · 30/12/2024 15:47

His poor parents must be distraught. It is probable they didn't know the consequences of this holiday romance either. It is easy to say everyone should research the laws and customs of the countries they visit, but a little compassion wouldn't go amiss.

angela1952 · 30/12/2024 15:47

I am very sorry for the young man, but surely everybody knows that the law in many part of the middle east is very different to here?

Channellingsophistication · 30/12/2024 15:49

perhaps we need to all write to David Lammy and ask him what he is doing about it as that boy should not be imprisoned! Utterly dreadful behaviour from the girl’s mother.

I would be very careful if I were you. Comments like this could be read as an incitement to commit crime.

No one here knows what really happened. Maybe the girl’s mother had good reason to report the incident.

Most adults but a,young man barely an adult maybe not?

He broke the law and is serving a year. It's not like he's on death row.

As I said on another thread, their prisons are not like ours over here. I hope the poor boy can survive this 🙏

Maybe his parents should have given some strong words and warnings in advance. Since they booked and paid for said trip unless they viewed he already knew and understood.

Same old smug people defending sending a young man to prison for a year for having consensual sex. I wonder if these posters are the same people who admit to losing their virginity before the age of 16 but say it was “different times” back then and that they wouldn’t want their own children to do that. Hypocrites.

CouldntGiveAHoot · 30/12/2024 15:52

These are serious countries that need to be taken seriously. They are not playgrounds - not matter how much bling and sportswashing they engage in. But I've lived in Saudi and seen grown men do stupid things that go against the law there, under the assumption it won't matter. No wonder an 18 year lad did.

I feel for him and hope his sentence is reduced or (if not) his year is not too hard.

As for the 'mother' of the girl. She should go fuck herself for her nasty, vindictive nature. Damn her to hell.

Such as,?
All we can go by are the reported facts, that two.teeagers, with just a,few, months,in between them had consensual sex, she, admitted it was consensual.

She was a vindictive bitch who was so angry that her daughter had lost her virginity outside of marriage/her faith that she punished the poor boy whose only mistake was not realising the local primitive laws.

No, because those countries work hard to create an illusion they are perfect for Westerners to holiday in, often casting a blind eye on obvious rules breaking as long as they get western money.

No Angela, they don't. I spoke to a man called Tony at the tip yesterday and he'd been to Prague with his DC for a break and proudly told me he "enjoyed Poland more than he thought he would". People go places and do things with little clue where they are, let alone what the laws are. Think of knowledge as a distribution like weight - yes the average person might know this, the top end - where I am as a seasoned travelled with 47 countries under my belt - understand these very well, but at the bottom end very hard working lovely people book a Love Holidays break with no knowledge and this boy did not even book it, he was with his parents as a treat. I went to Jamaica last year and met 3 gay British couples who had NO CLUE about the countries homophobic laws meaning they could face 10 years in prison. And the glossy all inc resorts that took thousands from them and happily booked "John and Steve" into a double room chose not to tell them. So please do not make these assumptions and have some empathy. HE IS 18 YEARS OLD! This so called CRIME harmed NO ONE

itsgettingweird · 30/12/2024 15:55

I'm very much law is law.

However in this case I can't help feeling the mother of the "victims" actions were vindictive.

I'm the UK they could legally have sex.

Her DD was 18 when she filed the report.

She went through her nearly adult DDs phone and then rang the authorities in Dubai to report him.

He's now going to spend a year in prison in Dubai for having sexual relations with someone 3 weeks before they turned 18 because the mother won't allow her DD to grow up - it states she's strict.

All I can say is fair play to Marcus for handing himself in. I think that says far more about him than the conviction.

And the report says a LOT about the woman's mother!

user23124 · 30/12/2024 15:55

@icelolly12 wtf is the matter with you? Ignorance, yes, but this is outright stupidity. Have a read about prison and racism in Dubai and sort yourself out.

endofthelinefinally · 30/12/2024 15:56

Rape and torture is very common in Dubai prison. HIV is rife. A young black man would be at extremely high risk, given the racism that exists there. This isn't anything like a year in a UK prison, which would be bad enough.

Zimunya · 30/12/2024 15:56

user23124 · 30/12/2024 12:30

I think that Dubai cannot have it both ways. Yes they can set the laws they wish but the UK government should slap a warning on any holiday adverts etc - "This country has extreme religious laws and you are at risk visiting unless you fully understand and accept these"
Like on cigarettes and alcohol.
The family who have lost their son for a year were hardworking good people who wanted a luxury holiday and had no idea this was the situation.
If these countries have these brutal laws we need to be very very clear with British holiday makers.
And shame on David Lammy for doing NOTHING to help his constituent - too keen on the oil money eh David?

Shame on David Lammy indeed. I think the FCDO does provide advice about travel to Dubai. Not in those words of course, but their guidance is pretty clear. Agree with other posters that the girl’s mother is appalling person.

itsgettingweird · 30/12/2024 15:56

Let’s be honest here, his biggest crime in the mothers eyes is that he’s guilty of being black.

That crossed my mind when we saw his picture today but then I also realised we have no idea of the ethnicity or religion of the woman and her mother? (Or has that been published?)

Aren’t you mortified enough at your last attempt at interpreting the law? I’m embarrassed for you, truly

She also lied and reported it as a non consensual forced rape on her daughter who was taken to a hotel against her will - why his she not being arrested for lying to the police?
