I cannot believe that this lad is going to spend a year in prison- yes, I know that’s the law there, he should have known better etc, etc
I hope that the girl’s mother is ashamed of her actions.
I don’t want to think what the impact will be on Marcus 😥

Luckily he seems like a sensible and grounded young lad. Let's hope he gets time off. Or perhaps Sheikh Maktoum will intervene.

Sadly I don’t think being sensible and grounded will help him in the type of prison he’s going to.

He’ll be lucky to survive.

So those nasty posters saying he’ll be out in no time and on Love Island either don’t have a clue or don’t have an empathetic bone in their bodies..

For me, my anger and I think I speak for a few others on this thread isn't so much the sentence (although is a bit).

It's that the mother would wait until home then lodge a complaint. Why? What was she hoping to achieve? Her daughter was almost 18 so to compare it to the UK, it's like my DD being a few months off the age of consent with her boyfriend being exactly that age. Unless it was rape nothing would come of it in the UK.

She made the complaint knowing full well what would happen to this young man and knowing full well she would be playing a major part j changing his life forever.

All because her daughter had sex with him, and as far as we know, willingly.

I couldn't sleep at night if I was her.

And the mom is British too so she well and knew at home it was all perfectly fine. She would have had to go searching for a way to keep them separate.

I agree that’s what probably has people more irate.

If she was Emirati I could maybe understand more or if the age gap was bigger. But the mom is an awful human being.

It’s almost like she’s trying to make the sexual encounter null and void. Look how innocent my poor daughter is, it was the nasty boy who forced himself on her and now he is in prison for it. My daughter is still technically a virgin, honest 🙄

The casual and callous cruelty shown on this thread makes me think very hard about how my black children would be treated if they made a mistake which hurt no one.

//

Quite. The competitive "you must follow the law" talk coupled with zero empathy is quite revolting.

JHound · 30/12/2024 16:11

Jolietta · 30/12/2024 16:00

Exactly.

Regardless of whether anyone agrees with their laws or not, he broke the law and is serving a prison sentence.

Don't go to these countries and act like a westerner and expect them to tolerate it.

Anyway, he'll be out and on Love Island or some other ghastly reality Tv show as a result of his infamy.

What do you mean “act like a westerner”? Have sec with somebody you some age at sixth form who is 2 months below the age of consent.

They have plenty of racist bones in their bodies though.

MyLadyGreensleeves · 30/12/2024 16:07

Quite, although there are hopes, albeit faint, that he might contact the people who can grow a cervix in a man and ask if they can grow him a brain.

Although who knows which would be the more difficult task.

It is really not a good look to drag Lammy's views on transgender people into a thread where people are concerned about the ruin-or worse- of a very young man's life.

You are right about - some - of those posters.Lets hope you are wrong about the prison.

If the mum did it to protect her daughters innocence she’s completely failed there.

Yes, the Love Island comment was particularly vile.

Ah yes, those wonderful exemplary Mumsnetters would never make an impulsive decision and are fortunately here to enlighten us. These people would never stoop to taking care of a bladder emergency down a darkened alley. Instead, they proudly soak their trousers and wear them saturated as a badge of moral superiority.

Then wonder why everyone seems to be avoiding them.

What the F are you on about?

I would be very careful if I were you. Comments like this could be read as an incitement to commit crime.

No one here knows what really happened. Maybe the girl’s mother had good reason to report the incident.

I don’t know how racism can be considered a good reason.

There is nothing to suggest any coercion - in fact it has been reported that the nature of messages and photos were two young lovers making plans for how they would see each other in the future when they both returned to their homes in London.

Zimunya · 30/12/2024 16:13

TwistedWonder · 30/12/2024 14:31

Seeing as Mr Lammy thinks a man can grow a cervix, we could be waiting quite some time to hear anything sensible from out of his mouth.

Well said!

Three things they don't like in Dubai

  1. Sex outside marriage
  2. Insulting anyone
  3. Alcohol

Do these things at your own peril but don't say you weren't warned.

And yes I feel sorry for the lad. Yes the girls mother is a cow.

Pleasebeafleabite · 30/12/2024 15:56

Aren’t you mortified enough at your last attempt at interpreting the law? I’m embarrassed for you, truly

Never blame any one in your life. Good people give you happiness. Bad people give you experience. Worse people give you a lesson and at best people give you memories.

So I hope you remember and have memories of "Ignorantia legis non excusat" at worst I gave you a valuble lesson, at best I gave you happiness. 😍

Why do people comment without knowing the facts.

Sex outside of marriage is legal for tourists.

That is not why he was imprisoned.

And then those people will also face the law only the uk one which is much softer.

Maybe she should. I doubt we will ever know her true reasons for reporting it let’s face it only be able to speculate.

MN is nicknamed “Prosecco Stormfront” for a reason.

No he was in a position to decide to break the law and traditions of the country he was a guest in. He chose to break the law and abuse their hospitatily now he is in prioson where he deserved to be.

@nogginatemycat or to put it in a more sane way “a teenager was taken on a family holiday and had a fling with another British tourist, just a few weeks younger than him. Sadly the girl’s mother is a controlling evil racist who chose to destroy his life”.

Other’s have asked this question but none of your punitive little buddies have answered it. Why did the mother not report this crime while she and her precious daughter were still in Dubai……? Hmmm, I wonder….. Surely if she has such incredible respect for the law, she should have considered that her daughter might have been guilty of something too. Knowing the misogyny of Dubai, I imagine they’d have found a way to punish her. But it’s OK, she’s back in the UK so she’s safe.

ohdelay · 30/12/2024 16:15

I do worry about some on this thread. Seriously a lot of you shouldn't leave the country, other countries are different to England.
Middle eastern countries in particular are not great for western romance or public drinking or getting into fights with locals or recreational drugs or falling out with your employer or backchatting anyone in authority. Stay home.

I think it is, partly. But also some people revel in being cruel online in a way they wouldn't be in real life.

It’s what? I’ve no idea and I’m complete lost. Like Johnny depp on a mega pint 😅
