I cannot believe that this lad is going to spend a year in prison- yes, I know that’s the law there, he should have known better etc, etc
I hope that the girl’s mother is ashamed of her actions.
I don’t want to think what the impact will be on Marcus 😥

I'd argue that no crime was committed. No one in Dubai was even aware a 'crime' was happening until a vicious woman decided to ruin a boy's life

If you break the law then of course a crime is committed! Until fairly recently it was against the UAE law to have sex outside of marriage!

icelolly12 · 30/12/2024 14:26

He broke the law and is serving a year. It's not like he's on death row.

He has a criminal record for a sex crime and has been charged as a paedophile plus his name and picture are all over the paper. This will impact his life possibly forever.

What an awful woman her mother is.

Such a vindictive thing to a family.

He had sex with an underage girl, which is usually called rape.

Edited

Lets, get in context there are a,few, months, between them had they had sex, here it would, have been legal
It's not like hes, some kind of predator

Well that’s not the gotcha you think it is - perhaps you should educate yourself on meaning of position of trust.

When this thread would be better spent on wondering what My Lammy is doing exactly as posted above

Seeing as Mr Lammy thinks a man can grow a cervix, we could be waiting quite some time to hear anything sensible from out of his mouth.

Really not cool to draw comparisons of this with rape.

I'd imagine if she is from a Muslim family then the biggest crime for her is that her Daughter has lost her 'honour' and has brought shame on the family and render her unable to get married as no longer a virgin.

To Westerners this might seem a very misogynistic way of thinking, but it does explain her perspective.

If someone is underage it is rape.

fiddleleaffig · 30/12/2024 14:33

I very rarely have sympathy with anyone who gets arrested in Dubai for committing a crime because "it's legal in the UK". The country is known for its super strict conservative laws. I think he was bloody lucky to only get a sentence of 1year. For Dubai, non-marital sex and with a minor could have been much much worse.
I do also think the mother that made the report should be ashamed over what she did as it was completely unnecessary and an OTT reaction, but I can't have sympathy with Marcus either. He did the right thing handing himself over and should be proud of how he's handled it.
And for people saying he's ruined his future career prospects, I'm sure most employers Google employees anyway and they can see he's not a paedophile, just a young lad that made a silly error of judgement

Where is,it usually called rape ?
In the UK it sex, with an under age, girl.would be sex, with a,minor but she, wouldn't be a,minor here and even if she,was thec police, wouldn't be interested in prosecuting a couple of Randy teensgers.

No, it's not, unless it is non-consensual.
If aged under 13yrs then it is as at that age they (either sex) cannot legally consent to sex.

Has the Daughter been publically identified?

Conkers2 · 30/12/2024 14:36

Completely agree about dubai not being able to have it both ways as a luxury party destination but also as strict religious country

I was amazed how many travel agents etc would try and convince me and my wife (same sex couple) to go on holiday to countries like dubai. Even at wedding fayres there were companies trying to advise us to go on honey moon and even big companies like sandals pushing for us to choose illegal destinations to honeymoon or even attempt to get married in. We had to point out to one rep that the wedding package was lovely but very illegal for us, so she switched to pushing a renewal package.

The resounding thing people told us when we laughed at their suggestions was "they only care about locals and not if westerners do it". I suspect what they mean is white people, and this case proves that.

jollygoose · 30/12/2024 14:37

I would be advising him to keep a diary and get a good book out if it. It will be his unique story to tell and hopefully pay him enough for a start again life.

Hoardasurass · 30/12/2024 14:38

Vinvertebrate · 30/12/2024 13:59

Yes, and the dreadful mother also waited until they were back in the UK to report it, because her daughter would have been in the shit as well. Just awful.

As her daughter was 17 and the "victim" of the crime of statutory rape she was at no risk of legal punishment

PandoraSox · 30/12/2024 14:38

icelolly12 · 30/12/2024 14:36

Has the Daughter been publically identified?

I am not sure as I haven't gone looking, but some posters have mentioned the mother being identified on Twitter. And I wonder if their friends and family might have realised who the girl involved is?

Almostwelsh · 30/12/2024 14:38

In the US sex with a minor is known as statutory rape, but that classification doesn't exist in England, it's called sexual activity with a minor. Idk about Dubai

As neither of the teens were American and the sex did not take place in the USA, it's irrelevant what the US laws might call it.

I can definitely see it made into a good bbc documentary or Netflix series!

As I understand it, she is from a Sikh family, Sikhs generally don't believe in sex before marriage. It's against the religious beliefs.

Hunglikeapolevaulter · 30/12/2024 14:39

If someone is underage it is rape.

Don't be silly. There was a two-month age difference and both are well above the age of consent in the UK, their home culture.

PinkiOcelot · 30/12/2024 14:40

Surely the girl broke the law too?! So her mum not reporting it until they were safely back in the UK is what I find repugnant.

She should be made to fly back and face a 12 month sentence. Would be the price of her mother!

Totally unfair that she got off Scot free.

forgotmyusername1 · 30/12/2024 14:40

Gone down a rabbit hole here

Someone got arrested and detained in dubai for two months for leaving a negative Google review on a business

Apparently the charge was slander

But I bet those who know ever law of every country they have ever visited know that leaving a bad Google review is illegal in dubai.

No, because according to their laws she was underage and therefore committed no crime.
