I cannot believe that this lad is going to spend a year in prison- yes, I know that’s the law there, he should have known better etc, etc
I hope that the girl’s mother is ashamed of her actions.
I don’t want to think what the impact will be on Marcus 😥

@nogginatemycat

Marcus wasn't in a position of authority or trust. So what's your point?

A lesson for all of us. Do not visit places like this. Do not support tourism in known homophobic, sexist countries.

Yep.

I like to think law abiding and respectful of the customs and laws of other countries, you obviously think your above them. Which speaks more about you then me thank you.

Edited

😂 ah yes. Having sympathy for an 18 year old boy and his parents, makes me think I'm above the law in another country. I'm astounded by your superior logic.

JHound · 30/12/2024 14:12

I read that she found the messages when back in the UK?

Irrespective it’s unlikely that the mother randomly knew the laws around consent in Dubai. She will have been researching a way to keep the two apart and ensure they could not continue their relationship in the UK.

Which makes it all the more disturbing.

I can almost imagine her looking it up on the Internet, pointing at the law and going 'gotchya'

No he was in a position to decide to break the law and traditions of the country he was a guest in. He chose to break the law and abuse their hospitatily now he is in prioson where he deserved to be.

  • If the suspect is 18 or over and in a position of trust to the complainant and the complainant is aged 16 or 17 the offence should be charged under Section 17 Sexual Offences 2003.

False

Position of trust... was Marcus her teacher or doctor?

Are you the girl's mother or a relative of hers?

Almostwelsh · 30/12/2024 14:24

On the plus side, I would hope that the publicity around this case has made some people think twice before booking a holiday in Dubai and supporting a country with such laws.

Well if you think 18 year olds are boys and should not be treated as adults and that makes them immune to the law, then I can see where your poor views origionate from.

The rest of us respect and follow the laws of other countries when they ALLOW us to visit.

I think that Dubai cannot have it both ways. Yes they can set the laws they wish but the UK government should slap a warning on any holiday adverts etc - "This country has extreme religious laws and you are at risk visiting unless you fully understand and accept these"
Like on cigarettes and alcohol.
The family who have lost their son for a year were hardworking good people who wanted a luxury holiday and had no idea this was the situation.
If these countries have these brutal laws we need to be very very clear with British holiday makers.
And shame on David Lammy for doing NOTHING to help his constituent - too keen on the oil money eh David?

I do agree with this.

Look Dubai has their laws and must enforce them as they see fit.

But I think advertising on Dubai should make crystal clear that it’s not Ibiza or Magaluf.

Also hopefully his conviction can be overturned on appeal as it appears the early stages of his case were mishandled.

icelolly12 · 30/12/2024 14:26

He broke the law and is serving a year. It's not like he's on death row.

nogginatemycat · 30/12/2024 13:39

So you disagree with some one who reported a crime?

The OP is posting because they are upset a criminal was charged for breaking the law of that country. If you dont want to follow that law of a country do not go or do not break the law, its as simple as that, his actions had consequences and he needs to face up to them.

How many posters on here who are shocked and defending him have also been posting or complaining about all the other people over the years that have been conviced of exatly the same in that county? Im looking really hard but I cant see a single one.

Edited

What crime? Consensual sex when they were both of legal age in the UK? Did the girl give her age before they had sex?

I don’t know why MN does not have the ability for you to block / hide members. Seems silly not to be able to filter out the nonsense easily.

Oh so your now going against MN rules and attacking me, nice. Sorry but im only pointing out the facts of this case, he broke the law and was found guilty sorry if you dont like the facts.

I assume you don't have teenagers

I guess when my boys get to that age googling the age of consent of the country we are going to has to now be added to the pre holiday check list.

Ireland is 17. Didn't know that.

Nobody is claiming otherwise but we can show empathy for somebody whose future has been harmed due to a racist and vindictive mother.

I'd argue that no crime was committed. No one in Dubai was even aware a 'crime' was happening until a vicious woman decided to ruin a boy's life

He had sex with an underage girl, which is usually called rape.

PrincessOfPreschool · 30/12/2024 14:28

I hope this impacts Dubai's tourist trade. Unfortunately I'm not their target audience as I've never had any inclination to go there. I hope somehow the prison sentence can be the making of Marcus and he can (somehow) use it to build character, resilience, compassion, desire to study law, I don't know but that something positive can come out of it. I hope he can even use the notoriety of this case in the future to get a job and that it can help him not hinder him.

Meanwhile I just really feel for that girl living with her controlling mother. I might prefer prison for a year to growing up and having her as a mum for a whole life.

Well that’s not the gotcha you think it is - perhaps you should educate yourself on meaning of position of trust.

When this thread would be better spent on wondering what My Lammy is doing exactly as posted above

So which of Dubai`s laws are you refuting, love to see your factual answer to this one.
