I cannot believe that this lad is going to spend a year in prison- yes, I know that’s the law there, he should have known better etc, etc
I hope that the girl’s mother is ashamed of her actions.
I don’t want to think what the impact will be on Marcus 😥

Why do people comment without knowing the facts.

Sex outside of marriage is legal for tourists.

That is not why he was imprisoned.

She didn’t say it was illegal. She said that it wasn’t liked / appreciated in Dubai.

MumblesParty · 30/12/2024 16:15

@nogginatemycat or to put it in a more sane way “a teenager was taken on a family holiday and had a fling with another British tourist, just a few weeks younger than him. Sadly the girl’s mother is a controlling evil racist who chose to destroy his life”.

Other’s have asked this question but none of your punitive little buddies have answered it. Why did the mother not report this crime while she and her precious daughter were still in Dubai……? Hmmm, I wonder….. Surely if she has such incredible respect for the law, she should have considered that her daughter might have been guilty of something too. Knowing the misogyny of Dubai, I imagine they’d have found a way to punish her. But it’s OK, she’s back in the UK so she’s safe.

I don’t know for a fact but it’s been reported that she didn’t know about the relationship until she was back in the UK and saw messages on her daughter phone.
Obviously I don’t know if that’s true or not.

But it has nothing to do with this case. At all.

They were kids on a family holiday.

Society views an 18 year old black male as a threat and adult sadly.

Infact, our black boys are considered a threat from around 12 years of age.

It is really not a good look to drag Lammy's views on transgender people into a thread where people are concerned about the ruin-or worse- of a very young man's life.

It is ALWAYS a good idea to highlight that a senior member of government believes that a man can grow a cervix and an opportunity must never be missed.

In the context of this thread, it is also reasonable to point out that a person who thinks that a man can grow a cervix might not be a wonderful intellect to rely on when hoping to gain a solution to this problem.

I would be very careful if I were you. Comments like this could be read as an incitement to commit crime.

No one here knows what really happened. Maybe the girl’s mother had good reason to report the incident.

People are perfectly entitled to comment and the mother’s face and name are all over twitter. All one has to do is search for Marcus’ name. And this thread is still standing so I don’t think it’s appropriate to make veiled threats.

The mother is (deservedly) getting a shit load of criticism. I imagine the dad is equally cuntish, though no ID as far as I can see. What a hideous thing to do to Marcus and her own daughter. Slut-shaming to the highest degree.

This thread is actually really upsetting. I had no idea people could be so cruel. Is it pure racism? I don’t understand.

Racism and, some posters,on mumsnet are particularly vile, about men in general they forget this,is,a,young 18 year old he could be anyone's son hes,not a,violent rapist yes,he,made,a,mistake I just hope he doesn't pay to dearly for it and someone in power intervenes

Delatron · 30/12/2024 16:20

Yep. Just another poster wanting to sound smug and clever. It beggars belief.

I do worry about some on this thread. Seriously a lot of you shouldn't leave the country, other countries are different to England.
Middle eastern countries in particular are not great for western romance or public drinking or getting into fights with locals or recreational drugs or falling out with your employer or backchatting anyone in authority. Stay home.

The 'middle Eastern country' involved wouldn't have had a clue if it hadn't been for the thoroughly reprehensible actions of the girl's mother. And for those suggesting the girl would have been classed as a victim and not prosecuted, these are places where women are prosecuted for being unfaithful to their husbands after being rapes, so I wouldn't be so sure.

Many of us can also comprehend countries are different to the UK.

What boggles many of our minds is why a mother would do this to another woman's son just for spite.

So yup one can be well traveled and still demonstrate empathy for this poor family

UndermyShoeJoe · 30/12/2024 16:21

I do also find it poor that the daughter face and name is dragged all over the net. She’s not her mother. She didn’t report the underage sex. But her looks and such are being ragged all over the place too.

If he should be considered innocent despite breaking laws of that country she is certainly innocent.

You know troll hunting is against MN rules right?

Also Im not willing to comment on her mother as i do not know the facts and neither do you. What I do know is a fact Marcus broke the law and Dubai and is in prison because of this, that is an undisputable fact.

Sorry if you dont like the fact he broke the law and was punished. No matter who reported him or their intentions why the basic facts are you should respect the law, traditions and curtural diffrences if you choose to visit and they allow you to stay there. Its not hard to comprehend.

YourGladSquid · 30/12/2024 16:23

Disgraceful.

I hope the girl’s mother never has a moment of peace in her miserable, sad life.

I agree that the daughter should be left out of it as this is on her mother not her.

Unfortunately once the mothers identity was discovered, it would be almost impossible for the daughter not to be named.

Plastictrees · 30/12/2024 16:20

What an insightful contribution.

He's not a child. Legally he's an adult. He believes that he is old enough to have sex with all that entails. And that includes considering that laws in other countries are different.
Just for the record and because I'm probably going to be asked. I didn't have sex until was an adult.

That is vile, no excuse for it.

Two young people's lives are being ruined. So sad.

MumblesParty · 30/12/2024 16:23

NewGreenDuck · 30/12/2024 16:09

Again. She did not break the law. He broke the law by having sex with a minor.
If people don't understand that, then I despair.

She’s a young woman who had unmarried casual sex with a black man. I expect Dubai would have found a way to punish her for that, despite her being 17 at the time. I know they claim to have relaxed their laws, but only a few years ago there were cases of women reporting rapes and being charged with having sex while unmarried. So I don’t doubt the “minor” in this case wouldn’t have got away a cup of tea and a hug! Which her vindictive mother obviously knew.

Yep good point. The truth is the law over there is open to corruption. I wouldn’t assume women will get treated any better than men.

For me, my anger and I think I speak for a few others on this thread isn't so much the sentence (although is a bit).

It's that the mother would wait until home then lodge a complaint. Why? What was she hoping to achieve? Her daughter was almost 18 so to compare it to the UK, it's like my DD being a few months off the age of consent with her boyfriend being exactly that age. Unless it was rape nothing would come of it in the UK.

She made the complaint knowing full well what would happen to this young man and knowing full well she would be playing a major part j changing his life forever.

All because her daughter had sex with him, and as far as we know, willingly.

I couldn't sleep at night if I was her.

I heard a representative from Detained in Dubai on the radio earlier and she said that the girl would also have been arrested and charged in Dubai. So that’s why the mother waited until back in UK. Also that the reason it has been prosecuted as a felony rather than a misdemeanour is down to the original claim that the daughter was not consenting. Wicked wicked woman. I hope her daughter is ok and gets away from her vile family at the earliest opportunity.

The whole thing is a disgrace and I judge anyone who goes there on holiday.

Nobody is,suggesting it isn't but a bit of common sense, would be helpful ,my son wss,18 on boxing day so has been an adult for five days he obviously friend that are not 18 yet but will be in a,few months,
Like this young man and women.
The punishment is,very harsh for a,matter of weeks.

JHound · 30/12/2024 16:13

I don’t know how racism can be considered a good reason.

There is nothing to suggest any coercion - in fact it has been reported that the nature of messages and photos were two young lovers making plans for how they would see each other in the future when they both returned to their homes in London.

Exactly this. Thank you for your posts. 🫶🏻
