fully aware I may be ranting and then be told I am lucky to have a referral at all, but I am stunned and ever so slightly cross.

DD2 has been referred for orthodontic treatment.......her upper jaw hasn;t grown properly and she has quite a gap between her front teeth.....she can poke her tongue thro!!!

anyhooo.....referral was sent off about 5wks ago, and today I got thro her appointment.

it is for....

wait for it.....

FEBRUARY 2009.............

why??????????

why such the long wait.....before she even gets assessed.

is it a common wait....is it because of the awful state of dentistry (is that even a word??) under the NHS.

Am I allowed to rant, seeing as said treatment will be 'free' after all (well.....we pay our taxes, so of course not completely free).....or am I being completely unreasonable and ungrateful???

wow that seems a huge wait. Dont know if it is normal as I have all this to come but 12 months wait for an assesment seems unreasonable to me..

Psychomum5 · 02/05/2008 17:16

woohoo...someone answered.

thankyou....I thought it a long wait too, but wondered if I was unreasonable to think so.

thing is also......I don;t have anyway of recording it at the moment either.....no diary, no calendar.......and they moan baout how many people miss or forget their appoinments....this is why!!!!

Wowee - that's a blinking long time!! If I were you I would plead with them to be told of the cancellations - if you can move heaven and earth to get there fast they may let you fill in (if you bug them enough...in a polite and friendly manner!)

Psychomum5 · 02/05/2008 17:20

oooh....never thought of phoning to see for cancellations...

good idea, thankyou for that.

still want to rant about it a little tho!!!

Ello you

This is why DS1 is having orthodontal treatment in Portsmouth...blimmin' miles away! It's because if we'd waited for one nearer here, we would have had to wait for a year. I did a bit when I found out it was in Portsmouth, but we just wanted it over and done with, so I make the annoying journey every 6 weeks (to a right old grump of an orthodontist )

Could you ring your dentist and see if there is one a bit further away that you could take H to? It may not come to anything, but it's worth a try.

Oh btw, ours in Portsmouth wasn't a wait because it had just opened and therefore didn't have a waiting list.

Ooooor, you could try the old 'H is having real personal issues because of her teeth, and it's affecting her confidence...' Might work in your favour.

cluckyagain · 02/05/2008 17:23

NO probs........do go ahead and rant - makes one feel SO much better!!!

wordgirl · 02/05/2008 17:23

DS2 has been referred to an orthodontist. The waiting list for an assessment is 18 months and then the waiting list for treatment is 24 months!

pointydog · 02/05/2008 17:24

How old is your dd? There's not much they can do before a certain age so maybe there is no rush for this, in their opinion.

Squirdle · 02/05/2008 17:24

Dentistry is a word btw, but it just reminds me of Monty Python for some reason

lilolilmanchester · 02/05/2008 17:26

How old is she Psychomum? Our dentist here refers children to ortho about 12 - 18 months before he believes they need treatment so that the appointment comes through at for the right time. He did that with my DS and will send off referral for DD in the next 6 - 12 months to time her ortho appointment with her mouth being ready for it. SO I guess the wait is normal.

Psychomum5 · 02/05/2008 17:26

hehe....good plan squirdle.

I am also waiting upon the referral for M (boy M, not the hormonal one{altho he is a little}).....since he had loads of teeth pulled, his knew ones are coming thro wonky....he is being referred to hospital tho as he needs major work done (and all this because of the ruddy car accident when he was inside me to.....I am wondering if I can open a claim for him now, but that is another thread entirely).

at least, with H being a girl, self image is one that will be regarded as slightly mre of an issue (why it should be I don;t know, but there it is.....unfair even so!!!)

how is A taking it all.....is he 'cool' with it???

OP posts:
Psychomum5 · 02/05/2008 17:29

ooh...yes....age

DD2 is 12, so maybe that is the reason for the wait...still got some adult teeth coming thro!

and....she also has to stop with the thumb sucking too as that isn;t helping (tis not the cause, but unhelpful all the same!)

DS1 is 7.....he has to start asap tho apparently otherwise his jaw will become deformed, or his teeth, not sure ewhich....but like I say....aother thread entirely!

OP posts:
Psychomum5 · 02/05/2008 17:30

and I am stunned for some of you and the wait......24 months

I think 12 is an ok age to start wearing braces.

A is absolutely fine with it. It's totally different from when we were at school in regards to teasing etc. Loads of children have them/are having them...kids just seem to accept it as normal now. And they know they will have that dazzling smile when they get them taken off

Mind you C (little C, not big ) was a little overenthusiastic when A cam in from school yesterday. Went running up to A to give him a cuddle and they collided. Now C has a lovely little brace shaped cut on his chin

Psychomum5 · 02/05/2008 17:37

aww....poor C.

altho lovely about the hugs

gotta run....dancing......again!!!

xx
